Revised: Maren's little sister

Thanks for all your thoughtful opinions and comments! Please keep them coming. I’m so happy I found nameberry!

Background: I’m looking for a name for [name]May[/name] [name]Baby[/name] Girl; big sister is [name]Maren[/name] [name]Carys[/name] (pron. [name]Mare[/name]-in Care-iss)

Names I’m keeping from “old list”

  • [name]Harper[/name]
  • [name]Juliet[/name]
  • [name]Teresa[/name] (nn [name]Reese[/name] or [name]Tess[/name]/[name]Tessa[/name])
  • [name]Tessa[/name]
  • [name]Liv[/name]
  • [name]Hannah[/name] (biggest negative is popularity)
  • [name]Paige[/name] (like the sound & match w/ [name]Maren[/name]… what has a similar feel?)

Names I’m adding from your suggestions:

  • [name]Brenna[/name]
  • [name]Geneva[/name] (nn [name]Eve[/name]/[name]Evie[/name], FYI: I’m [name]Jennifer[/name] nn [name]Jen[/name])
  • [name]Romilly[/name]
  • [name]Linnea[/name] (what is the common pronounciation? [name]Lin[/name] EE ah or [name]Lin[/name] ay?)
  • [name]Alice[/name]
  • [name]Greta[/name] (like this style, but think lederhosen… any similar feel?)

Names I love, but are out:

  • [name]Piper[/name]: [name]SIL[/name] and [name]BIL[/name] used it
  • [name]Avery[/name]: too unisex but has feel I like
  • [name]Scarlett[/name]: I already have a red-head [name]Maren[/name], what if I end up with a blond [name]Scarlett[/name] (LOL)

I love [name]Greta[/name] and think it’s really shed it’s clunky image and now looks fresh and modern. It’s one of those names that is short, has a great sound, but for some reason is not overused. The only name that comes to mind that’s similar in feel for me is [name]Stella[/name], but that name seems a little trendy right now.

In terms of other names that have a similar feel to [name]Paige[/name], how about [name]Sage[/name] (duh, right?) or [name]Fay[/name]? Another that I think of but am not as fond of is [name]Sadie[/name].

From your list I also love [name]Tessa[/name] and [name]Liv[/name]. Another name that comes to mind when looking over your list is [name]Sylvie[/name].

From your “old list” my favorites are:

  • [name]Tessa[/name]
  • [name]Liv[/name]

From your added names my favorites are:

  • [name]Romilly[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] this with [name]Maren[/name]
  • [name]Linnea[/name] (what is the common pronounciation? [name]Lin[/name] EE ah or [name]Lin[/name] ay?) I say this [name]Lin[/name]-nay-ah but I have no idea if that right!
  • [name]Greta[/name] (like this style, but think lederhosen… any similar feel?) maybe [name]Ingrid[/name], [name]Frida[/name], [name]Anika[/name] ([name]Annika[/name]), [name]Reina[/name], [name]Paloma[/name]

I really like [name]Harper[/name], [name]Hannah[/name], [name]Liv[/name], and [name]Paige[/name].

Similar to [name]Paige[/name]?: I think of [name]Claire[/name]. Like [name]Paige[/name]/[name]Page[/name], it can be spelled [name]Claire[/name]/[name]Clare[/name]…
Also, [name]Saige[/name] or [name]Fauna[/name]…

  • [name]Linnea[/name] (what is the common pronounciation? [name]Lin[/name] EE ah or [name]Lin[/name] ay?)–I was under the impression that this was mainly pronounced [name]Lin[/name]-EE. Sort of how ‘[name]Lea[/name]’ is sometimes pronounced ‘[name]Lee[/name]’, if that makes any sense!

  • [name]Greta[/name] (like this style, but think lederhosen… any similar feel?)–I really like the name [name]Greta[/name] as well.
Similar feel…to me this would just naturally be [name]Gretchen[/name] or [name]Heidi[/name]…(love both names).

I think [name]Greta[/name] is the perfect sibling name for [name]Maren[/name]. I actually think of it more as a Scandinavian name than Swiss, Austrian or [name]German[/name], so lederhosen doesn’t cross my mind at all. I think of Swedish-born silent screen goddess [name]Greta[/name] [name]Garbo[/name] more than anyone. It’s elegant in an understated way, simple but sophisticated and definitely worldly. It’s cute on a little girl and transfers effortlessly into adulthood. My second and third choices would be [name]Linnea[/name] (commonly pronounced as lee-nay-ah) and [name]Liv[/name] (pronounced leev). All the best!

[name]Jen[/name],

[name]Maren[/name] is so sweet and cool! Off your list, I think [name]Harper[/name], [name]Tessa[/name], [name]Liv[/name] [liv], and [name]Paige[/name] are perfect. Well, I’d go for [name]Tess[/name] over [name]Tessa[/name], as I’m so not a [name]Tessa[/name] person, but you get the drift. [name]Liv[/name] is a name I’ve been suggesting here forever and I’d love for someone to use it! It’s fabulous, right? I could see [name]Hannah[/name] and [name]Brenna[/name] working, too, but [name]Brenna[/name]'s a little tired nowadays and, as you said, [name]Hannah[/name] is popular - I love the [name]Hanna[/name] spelling, though, and [name]Hana[/name] [HAH-na] is a thought, too…

I’m really not seeing [name]Geneva[/name], [name]Alice[/name], [name]Greta[/name], or [name]Linnea[/name] [lin-NAY-uh] with [name]Maren[/name]. Sorry! [name]Geneva[/name] is too bold, [name]Alice[/name] is too classic, [name]Greta[/name] is too vintage, and [name]Linnea[/name] is too feminine. At least, that’s my perspective! A shame, since I love those names, too.

But, here are my suggestions:

[name]Adair[/name] [uh-DARE]
[name]Alla[/name] [[name]AH[/name]-luh]
[name]Afton[/name]
[name]Brooke[/name]
[name]Bridget[/name]
[name]Deirdre[/name] [[name]DEE[/name]-dra]
[name]Delaney[/name]
[name]Ellis[/name]
[name]Elspeth[/name]
[name]Ember[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name] - This is the most feminine I’d go!
[name]Gemma[/name] [[name]JEM[/name]-uh]
[name]Glory[/name]
[name]Hanna[/name]
[name]Hollis[/name]
[name]Halley[/name] [HAH-lee]
[name]Isla[/name] [EYE-luh]
[name]Iris[/name]
[name]Isobel[/name]
[name]Journey[/name]
[name]Jade[/name]
[name]Keira[/name] [[name]KEER[/name]-uh]
[name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Lola[/name]
[name]Lara[/name] [LAR-uh]
[name]Lennox[/name]
[name]Laurel[/name]
[name]Lark[/name]
[name]Orla[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Padgett[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name]
[name]Rory[/name]
[name]Rochelle[/name]
[name]Sela[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name]
[name]Tamsin[/name]
[name]Thessaly[/name]
[name]Willa[/name]

Alright, that was lots of different styles - classic, word names, hipster, unisex. See any you like? My favorites with Miss [name]Maren[/name] are marked in bold…

[name]Lemon[/name]

Names I’m keeping from “old list”

  • [name]Harper[/name]
  • [name]Juliet[/name]
  • [name]Teresa[/name] (nn [name]Reese[/name] or [name]Tess[/name]/[name]Tessa[/name])
  • [name]Tessa[/name]
  • [name]Liv[/name]
  • [name]Hannah[/name] (biggest negative is popularity)
  • [name]Paige[/name] (like the sound & match w/ [name]Maren[/name]… what has a similar feel?)
^^ Honestly, I love all of them. The only thing is, [name]Paige[/name] is sorted of dated and bland now. And [name]Liv[/name] can’t stand alone [name]IMO[/name].

Names I’m adding from your suggestions:

  • [name]Brenna[/name] - Not feeling this. It feels too trendy.
  • [name]Geneva[/name] (nn [name]Eve[/name]/[name]Evie[/name], FYI: I’m [name]Jennifer[/name] nn [name]Jen[/name]) - I’d say it’s too close to [name]Jennifer[/name].
  • [name]Romilly[/name] - I’m not a fan. But maybe that’s just me. It just sounds like it’s trying to hard to sound romantic and classic when it’s not.
  • [name]Linnea[/name] (what is the common pronounciation? [name]Lin[/name] EE ah or [name]Lin[/name] ay?) - This is nice. It’s said [name]Lin[/name]-AY-uh.
  • [name]Alice[/name] - Cute! I love with [name]Maren[/name].
  • [name]Greta[/name] (like this style, but think lederhosen… any similar feel?) - I love this! Espesh with [name]Maren[/name].

Names I love, but are out:

  • [name]Scarlett[/name]: - I think it’s totally fine to use it if she’s blonde!
  • [name]Harper[/name]- Eh. I could take it or leave it.
  • [name]Juliet[/name]- I like it a lot!
  • [name]Teresa[/name] (nn [name]Reese[/name] or [name]Tess[/name]/[name]Tessa[/name])- One of my favorite names, and so often overlooked! Great nicknames, too.
  • [name]Tessa[/name]- I like [name]Teresa[/name] as a full name better, plus she can go by [name]Reese[/name] too.
  • [name]Liv[/name]- I don’t like it on its own, and if you don’t like [name]Hannah[/name]'s popularity you’ve got to consider Olivias. The vast majority of Olivias respond to [name]Liv[/name], so I don’t think [name]Liv[/name] is as uncommon as you think it is.
  • [name]Hannah[/name] (biggest negative is popularity)- [name]Hannah[/name]'s always seemed too soft and quiet for me. It’s all those h’s, and the fact that it’s a palindrome- it feels weak to me. I like [name]Anna[/name] a lot more.
  • [name]Paige[/name] - I’ve always thought it was too noun-y, and it feels dated to me. It also sounds a bit harsh to me as well.
  • [name]Brenna[/name]- [name]Love[/name] it, and I think it’s great with [name]Maren[/name].
  • [name]Geneva[/name] (nn [name]Eve[/name]/[name]Evie[/name], FYI: I’m [name]Jennifer[/name] nn [name]Jen[/name])- I don’t really care for [name]Geneva[/name] too much. Too city to me, though it’s better than other place names.
  • [name]Romilly[/name]- There’s something I don’t like about [name]Romilly[/name], and I can’t for the life of me figure out what it is. I think it’s something about the milly part, but I really don’t know.
  • [name]Linnea[/name] (what is the common pronounciation? [name]Lin[/name] EE ah or [name]Lin[/name] ay?)- It’s lin-AY-a. I think it’s beautiful.
  • [name]Alice[/name]- I love it, but it’s not the best match with [name]Maren[/name]. I still love it though.
  • [name]Greta[/name]- I don’t love it. It’s just unpleasant sounding to me. What do you think of [name]Etta[/name], or a long name shortened to [name]Etta[/name]?

My favorites (considering big sis is named [name]Maren[/name]) are [name]Brenna[/name], [name]Teresa[/name] ([name]Tessa[/name]/[name]Reese[/name]), and [name]Linnea[/name]. I also like [name]Juliet[/name] and [name]Alice[/name], but I feel the others are a better fit.

[name]Maren[/name] [name]Carys[/name] is fabulous! I’m sure you will find an equally great name for her sister. You have a lot of great choices, so here are my thoughts and suggestions.

Names from “old list”

  • [name]Harper[/name]: personally not one of my favorites, as I’ve been hearing it around a lot recently. [name]Maren[/name] is very distinctive and to me [name]Harper[/name] is on the trendier side.
  • [name]Juliet[/name]: I love [name]Juliet[/name]. It feels a bit girlier to me than [name]Maren[/name], so not the perfect match but it complements [name]Maren[/name] nicely.
  • [name]Teresa[/name]: feels a bit older and more formal than [name]Maren[/name]. I think [name]Reese[/name] or [name]Tess[/name] on their own would go much better.
  • [name]Tessa[/name]: love love love [name]Tessa[/name]. I agree with whoever said [name]Tess[/name] goes even better, but [name]Tessa[/name] has a sweetness that differs it from [name]Maren[/name] more, if you want to go in that direction.
  • [name]Liv[/name]: I went through a phase when I loved [name]Liv[/name]. Now I think it’s a bit too brief as a full name. But it does go quite well with [name]Maren[/name]. [name]How[/name] about [name]Olive[/name] nn [name]Liv[/name]? [name]Olive[/name]'s kind of quirky and not frilly, like [name]Maren[/name].
  • [name]Hannah[/name]: super popular, and also much softer and girlier than [name]Maren[/name].
  • [name]Paige[/name]: love this with [name]Maren[/name]. [name]Paige[/name] happens to be my middle name and my best friends name- so I have a lot of good associations with the name, obviously! Similar names to [name]Paige[/name] are [name]Claire[/name], [name]Blair[/name], [name]Maeve[/name], [name]Sloane[/name], [name]Quinn[/name], [name]Lark[/name], [name]Jade[/name], [name]Brynn[/name]. I like [name]Blair[/name], [name]Maeve[/name] and [name]Lark[/name] with [name]Maren[/name]. I actually really love [name]Lark[/name] with [name]Maren[/name].

Names from suggestions:

  • [name]Brenna[/name]: [name]Brenna[/name] feels a bit, i don’t know, 90s maybe, to me. It reminds me of [name]Brenda[/name] which was just really popular in my area growing up and reminds me of 90210. [name]Brynn[/name] feels fresher to me.
  • [name]Geneva[/name] (nn [name]Eve[/name]/[name]Evie[/name], FYI: I’m [name]Jennifer[/name] nn [name]Jen[/name]): [name]Geneva[/name] feels a bit more exotic than [name]Maren[/name]. I could almost see [name]Genevieve[/name] working better with [name]Maren[/name]. I like the nickname [name]Eve[/name]/[name]Evie[/name] though and think [name]Eve[/name] on it’s own could go nicely with [name]Maren[/name]. [name]Ever[/name] is also an interesting option. [name]Evelyn[/name] works too.
  • [name]Romilly[/name]: even though this name is traditionally male it feels very frilly too me. I’d almost rather see [name]Romy[/name] with [name]Maren[/name].
  • [name]Linnea[/name]: I’d pronounce it lin-AY-uh. Kind of differet and offbeat with [name]Maren[/name]. I could see them as sisters.
  • [name]Alice[/name]: a bit too common with [name]Maren[/name], though it’s not popular, it’s kind of everywhere, whereas [name]Maren[/name] is much less heard.
  • [name]Greta[/name]: I like [name]Greta[/name]. I think it could work with [name]Maren[/name]. It’s a bit more old-ladyish though.

Some other suggestions, sorry for repeats:
