Rhyming Names?

We are really liking the name [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] for our baby boy, but there is one problem… My husbands name is [name_m]Eric[/name_m] and we don’t really love the idea of rhyming names. Would this be a deal breaker for you?

On another note, any nickname suggests for [name_m]Merrick[/name_m]? Not really into [name_m]Rick[/name_m].

Thanks!

I don’t mind the rhyming.

The rhyming isn’t that bad. Maybe, Mer, [name_u]Ricky[/name_u], or [name_m]Mick[/name_m] for nicknames?

I love [name_m]Merrick[/name_m]! Our first apartment complex was called [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] so I have always had a soft spot for the name and have considered using it, although I wanted to use it for a girl (I was thinking [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]). I think it’s fine that they rhyme, especially because it’s not spelled “Meric”–the extra letters make it feel like a completely different name to me, even though I know it is pronounced the same. I planned to use Mere as a nickname, but that might be a bit feminine. Depending on the middle name that you choose you could call him by his initials–I thought about doing [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] for a girl and calling her MJ, so you could do [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m], etc. I also have a friend who’s name is [name_u]Michael[/name_u] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and he goes by [name_u]Mo[/name_u] (his initials), so you could do [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]/[name_m]Merrick[/name_m] [name_u]Owen[/name_u]/something along those lines!

I would not name my children [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] and [name_m]Eric[/name_m]…but I think it’s fine for father and son. Actually, I know an [name_m]Erik[/name_m] who has a son name [name_m]Merrick[/name_m]…I never even noticed until now that they rhyme.

That is good to hear! [name_f]Glad[/name_f] you never noticed

I think it’s sweet as a girls name too. And I love [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] with [name_f]Jane[/name_f] or [name_u]James[/name_u], good idea!

I wouldn’t worry too much about the rhyming. Nicknames for [name_m]Merrick[/name_m]: [name_m]Mick[/name_m], [name_m]Mac[/name_m]/ [name_m]Mack[/name_m], [name_u]Micky[/name_u].

I don’t think the rhyming names are an issue. For brothers, yes. Father and son - if anything, quite cute. [name_u]Ricky[/name_u] or [name_u]Mickey[/name_u], maybe? But not sure if you like [name_u]Ricky[/name_u], since you don’t like [name_m]Rick[/name_m]. I find it super cute.

I love the name [name_m]Merrick[/name_m]… and I agree with the previous poster, I wouldn’t rhyme brother names, but with father and son it seems fine. It could be interpreted as a subtle way of naming a son after his father with a name that sounds similar, yet is distinct and his very own. The letters [name_m]ERIC[/name_m] are in the middle of m[name_m]ERrICk[/name_m].

It is my opinion that [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] does not need a nickname. I have a nephew with the name and he has always gone by the full name. It does only have two syllables.

I like [name_m]Merrick[/name_m]. Nickname [name_u]Micky[/name_u].

For siblings it wouldn’t work but as father and son its fine!

I would advise against it. Other people won’t notice or care, but it’ll be confusing in the home. My daughter is [name_u]Clare[/name_u] and when my dad [name_m]Larry[/name_m] (who is often called Lar by my mom and husband) visits they both frequently mishear their names when we call for someone. My daughter is so frustrated by this.
