So I’m pregnant with my 2nd son and the only name my husband and I found out we truly seem to like out of tons of names is [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]. Our first son is [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]. Our last name starts with an R and we kinda wanted to stick with R names. Once I told my family what we wanted to name our new baby they kinda thought it wasn’t good. They think most people will pronounce it wrong and/or spell it wrong. We are not super opposed to [name_u]Reece[/name_u] or [name_u]Reese[/name_u], but we don’t love it as much as [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]. It just looks cool and more masculine. We live in [name_u]America[/name_u]. [name_m]Will[/name_m] my child be doomed with everyone mispronouncing his name? Should we just name him [name_u]Reece[/name_u] or [name_u]Reese[/name_u]? [name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe the is something out there that’s better. Thoughts? I personally don’t know anyone with the name [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] and like that it seems somewhat more uncommon.
I absolutely love [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]! I agree that it just looks so handsome and masculine. I’m not a fan of the spellings [name_u]Reece[/name_u] and [name_u]Reese[/name_u], and if you aren’t, you shouldn’t use them.
I imagine the spelling would post a bit of an issue, but it wouldn’t be too bad. It’s pretty common to spell it [name_u]Rhys[/name_u], even if it isn’t as common as [name_u]Reese[/name_u]/Reece, right? You’d just say “Oh, it’s spelled [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]” and they would get it from then on.
I don’t know anyone with this particular name but I always have to spell out my last name. I usually just say “[lastname], [how to spell it]” whenever I’m telling it to someone who is writing it down. I don’t mind it, so I’d assume spelling out [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] occasionally wouldn’t be bad!
Go with [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]!!
There might be some mispronouncing, but it’s a known name, and with a simple correction people will get it right away! Plus [name_u]Reese[/name_u] or [name_u]Reece[/name_u] reminds me of the candy bar, [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] is a great spelling in my opinion. And I love alliterative names, so the R theme is super cute!
I love [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] with [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]! I do think you might run into pronunciation/spelling issues now and again; if I didn’t spend time on Nameberry, I don’t think I’d be able to guess the pronunciation right on the first try. But I also don’t think that has to be a reason to avoid a name you love–it’s an easy correction, and a great name!
Rhys is great! I love it for you, even though I prefer [name_u]Reece[/name_u], but if you love [name_u]Rhys[/name_u], go for it! If his name gets pronounced wrong, it’s just an “it’s pronounced this way”, right? Same goes for if it’s spelt wrong
I prefer how [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] looks! The pronunciation isn’t hard to guess imo. If that helps, [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] is the most popular spelling in US, followed by [name_u]Reece[/name_u] and then [name_u]Reese[/name_u]
Rhys! Looks much nicer
I really like [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]. I think it’s familiar enough that it it wouldn’t be too mispronounced
Neither spelling in the title would be my first guess if I heard someone introduce themself as [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] - that would be [name_u]Reese[/name_u] because that’s what I’m familiar with.
It wouldn’t be too hard to correct to [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] if that’s the spelling that calls to you though. And people can learn to associate the [name_u]Reese[/name_u] sounds with the [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] spelling. That said, I do think he’d be correcting people frequently as to the pronunciation because prior to nameberry, I would have no clue how to say [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] (rice, maybe?)
As for other suggestions:
Rowan & [name_u]Reeve[/name_u]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] & [name_u]River[/name_u]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] & [name_u]Reed[/name_u]/Reid
Definitely [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]! I think most people will get it right, and, if not, it’s any easy correction.
Another vote for [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]! People will figure it out if they aren’t already familiar with it.
I’m not big on [name_u]Reeve[/name_u]… and it’s funny because [name_u]River[/name_u] and [name_u]Reed[/name_u]/Reid were on my list as well, but unfortunately aren’t going to fly. I had a good friend growing up named [name_u]Reed[/name_u], so I can’t see naming my child that now. I do actually really like that name. Then, I went to school with someone who has 2 sons named [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and [name_u]River[/name_u]… so that kinda killed [name_u]River[/name_u] for me haha, which before was actually a top contender. Not that we are good friends or anything, but I would feel as if I somehow copied her. I still prefer [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] as well. Thank you for these suggestions.
Thank you for the feedback everyone! I’m feeling more confident in [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] now.
I love [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] and love it with [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]! I don’t think it will be a big problem with spelling/pronunciation.
I love the spelling [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]!
I know a baby [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]. I didn’t know how to pronounce it but I only needed to be told once. It’s a great choice.
Rhys all the way! It’s strong & masculine. I love this spelling also. The first time I saw it spelled “[name_u]Rhys[/name_u]”, I didn’t realize the pronunciation, but once I was corrected once I’ve never made the mistake again. Since then, I’ve fallen for [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] for a boy!
I like [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]. I gave my son the middle name [name_u]Reese[/name_u]- just because its my favorite spelling of the name personally. But absolutely nothing wrong with [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] and the Welsh spelling. I dont think it will be too much of an issue, its pretty intuitive.
Rhys is a great choice! I think it’s familiar enough that it wouldn’t be “doomed to mispronunciation”. Go for it!
Rhys is so nice! Honestly it’s the only spelling of [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]/Reece/Reese that is masculine to me [name_u]Reece[/name_u]/Reese are more feminine in my opinion.
I love [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] together, use it! The rest of your family will learn to love it!
