After an Irish poster on another name board revealed that the name [name_u]Delaney[/name_u] would be ridiculous to use, I’m back to the drawing board. Can anyone please suggest a name for baby girl set to arrive in 5 weeks that will fit in with our sibset?
[name_f]Kathleen[/name_f] [name_u]Ryan[/name_u]
[name_m]William[/name_m] [name_m]Peter[/name_m]
[name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_u]Riley[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
Last name Irish ending in “y”
Thanks so much for the help, I’m just completely at a loss!
Why is [name_u]Delaney[/name_u] ridiculous? I know two little girls name [name_u]Delaney[/name_u]. One goes by her full name and the other just goes by [name_u]Laney[/name_u]
Oh yes!!! [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Rollo[/name_m]'s suggestion of [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] especially nn [name_f]Bree[/name_f] or [name_f]Bridie[/name_f] or even the traditional Irish “Breege” SWOON!!!
I love [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f]! It doesn’t get enough love, but it’s my moms name and I could see using it as a first or middle.
If you live in the US or [name_f]Canada[/name_f], [name_u]Delaney[/name_u] isn’t ridiculous. It’s pretty common! If it’s still your favorite I would use it!
Not all your names follow it, but a lot of yours sound Irish-American: Irish/Celtic origins (or popularly perceived Irish origins) but accessible in the states. In that vein:
[name_f]Brigid[/name_f]/[name_f]Bridget[/name_f] - as suggested before. I love NN [name_f]Birdie[/name_f].
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Mara[/name_f]
[name_f]Deirdre[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] (biased here)
[name_f]Ciara[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
These ones may cause problems with pronunciation, but are so pretty:
[name_f]Roisin[/name_f]
[name_f]Niamh[/name_f]
[name_f]Aoife[/name_f]
[name_f]Ailis[/name_f]
[name_f]Aine[/name_f]
[name_f]Saoirse[/name_f]
To go with your classic names:
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Rachel[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
I would not allow some stranger, or anyone for that matter, have that much control in what I name my own child. [name_u]Delaney[/name_u] is beautiful and sweet. Now, the fact that one person could make you rethink the name, has me wondering if it is the one for you. If it is the one, stand proud of the name. This is your child, you will be the one calling out this name for decades and decades to come. This stranger will not even remember your post a week from now.
Ha! Thanks so much for this advice! I think I will stick with [name_u]Delaney[/name_u]… And I’m going to look back through this thread to find a classic mn to go with it
I don’t think [name_u]Delaney[/name_u] is ridiculous at all! If you love it you should go for it! I know a [name_u]Delaine[/name_u] which is similar but have yet to meet a [name_u]Delaney[/name_u], although I always think of the [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] Buffett song
It’s not my style but I don’t think [name_u]Delaney[/name_u] is ridiculous. I wouldn’t use it simply because your surname ends in the same sound. [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f] or [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] would make a better choice.
[name_f]My[/name_f] oldest daughter is already [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f]! I love it. Not crazy about [name_f]Bridget[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Delaney[/name_u] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]?
Nothing wrong with [name_u]Delaney[/name_u], and it goes with your style of naming too. If you heart [name_u]Delaney[/name_u], then use it. it’s cute and spunky.
I’m also a little concerned about the Irish last name ending in “y”… sounds like it could be very rhymey with [name_u]Delaney[/name_u]. Making the name not “ridiculous,” exactly, but maybe not the most stylistically appropriate choice.
