Rivka WDYT?

I am revamping my girls name list. I really like the name [name]Rivka[/name] pronounced Riv (like [name]Liv[/name])-KA. Does it make a good sibset w Mir” and [name]Lila[/name] (pronounced lee-la)? [name]Do[/name] you better see one of these names w my [name]Lila[/name] and Mir”? Thought it might help if you knew what my kids look like: [name]Lila[/name] has medium blonde hair, bright blues eyes and fair skin. Mir” is a toe head and I think will have green or hazel eyes (hard to tell he is only 2 months old). My next child could be darker since DH has an italian coloring while I’m the blonde green eyed one.

[name]Clementine[/name]- i think its to long and frilly for my sibset and I feel like its getting too pop. DH loves it
[name]Cameo[/name]- i think its too much O with Mir”
[name]Zinnia[/name]- love
[name]Ocean[/name]- pronounced oshan not the french way
[name]Paloma[/name]- its getting a bit pop for me
[name]Pippy[/name]- Dh loves im Not convinced

Thanx,
[name]Meryl[/name]

[name]Rivka[/name] happens to be my hebrew name and of course I love it. I’m from New [name]York[/name] so if I were to come across a [name]Rivka[/name] I’d assume they were from a religious (Orthodox) Jewish family, since that is who tends to use the name these days. If that’s not a problem for you then use it. I like some of the other names on your list better with your other children though, [name]Rivka[/name] seems very old-testament/hebrew to me while your other names sound more current. Anyway, I really like [name]Paloma[/name] and [name]Zinnia[/name]. I think they aren’t too matchy but have the exotic vibe your other names do.

[name]Clementine[/name]- i think its to long and frilly for my sibset: I agree… not bad though
[name]Cameo[/name]- i think its too much O with Mir”: I think so too
[name]Zinnia[/name]- love: really like, think it has the right feel for your sibset
[name]Ocean[/name]- pronounced oshan not the french way: for me, this is too much of a common word to work well as a name…
[name]Paloma[/name]- its getting a bit pop for me: I like this, but it seems like you might prefer something more exotic-sounding?
[name]Pippy[/name]- Dh loves im Not convinced: I think that to most people, this name will always and forever be property of Ms. Longstocking

I have never heard [name]Rivka[/name] (maybe because there is not a big Jewish community where I live.) I like that it adds even more muticultural variety to your set, but it sounds quite strange to my ears.

I really like [name]Zinnia[/name] and [name]Paloma[/name], though! I think both have the right balance of sounding exotic but somewhat familiar. One thing to consider with [name]Zinnia[/name]-- the way I pronounce it ([name]ZEE[/name]-nya) has exactly the same vowel pattern as [name]Lila[/name] (EE-a in both cases.) I don’t necessarily think this is a problem, but [name]Paloma[/name] would give a bit more sound variety. On the other hand, Miro also has that EE as the first vowel, so I suppose [name]Zinnia[/name] would keep it consistent. This may not be helpful or important to you, but just thought I’d mention it in case!

Thank you for your reply. I know that [name]Rivka[/name] is a form of [name]Rebecca[/name], which is a name widely used in the jewish community. We are not jewish. Would it be offensive to use [name]Rivka[/name] if we are NOT jewish? I associate [name]Asher[/name] with a jewish child but have seen non jewish families use it too.

I would pronounce [name]Zinnia[/name] ZIN- e -ah. I agree [name]Pippy[/name] does remind me of longstocking but many people still think of [name]Clementine[/name] from “oh my darling [name]Clementine[/name]”, so maybe DH is ahead of the naming curve and [name]Pippy[/name] might be the next berri favorite! [name]Pippy[/name] is almost like [name]Poppy[/name] and [name]Pippa[/name] 2 very well recieved names around here. I just dont think i could say that name various times a day.

I don’t think using [name]Rivka[/name] would be considered offensive at all, but you’d probably encounter a lot people who would assume you are Jewish if they hear the name. [name]Rebecca[/name] is widely used, as are many old-testament names ([name]Noah[/name], [name]Jacob[/name], [name]Abigail[/name], [name]Joshua[/name], etc.). [name]Rivka[/name] though is the direct Hebrew name found in the Torah (Hebrew Bible), so it is more associated with Judaism and Yiddish ([name]Rivka[/name]/Rivky is a huge with the Orthodox community). There have been plenty of debates about name appropriation so it just depends where you fall on that.

I think it’s lovely, but I could never quite get over the meaning - noose. It does have a beautiful sound, though. If you really like it go for it!

The meaning of [name]Rivka[/name] has actually been debated about quite a lot by Rabbinical scholars. Some will tell you it means “young calf” symbolizing innocence, while others say it means “noose”, “snare”, “bind” or “captivating beauty.”

Thank you for all your insight freckles. Once I actually get prego again i will need help w my list. I just want to discuss a few names with the berries before I bring it up to the hubby.
