Rocky III?

DH and I have started talking about having children and what we’d name them. Since DH is a “[name]Jr[/name],” I know that he would love to have our first son be “the third.” However, we live in the same town as his father, and it’s already confusing having 2 people with the same name, so I worry about adding another. Their name is R0bert [name]Edmund[/name] – and while DH is/was “[name]Robbie[/name]” and his father is “[name]Rob[/name] or [name]Robert[/name],” DH goes by [name]Rob[/name] now that he’s older (and that’s what I call him), so essentially they’re both [name]Rob[/name].

So, my question is – should we name our first son after him, or go with something else? I was thinking we could also maybe come up with a nickname for our son, so he wouldn’t be confused with the others. I was thinking either [name]Trey[/name], [name]Rocky[/name] or [name]Rocco[/name]. What do you think?

[name]Robert[/name] [name]Edmund[/name] is very handsome. [name]Rocky[/name] or [name]Rocco[/name] would be great nick names, there’s also [name]Bob[/name] or [name]Bobby[/name]. Another option would be to use his middle name in everyday situations, so he’d be [name]Robert[/name] [name]Edmund[/name] but you’d call him [name]Edmund[/name]. Oh, you could call him [name]Ted[/name]? The ‘T’ is the last letter of [name]Robert[/name] and ‘ed’ are the first two of [name]Edmund[/name].

Anyway, those are just ideas. [name]Tripp[/name] is often used for IIIs too.

[name]Robert[/name] [name]Edmund[/name] is certainly a handsome name - no wonder you’re considering repeating it!

I like the idea of an alternate nickname, however I wouldn’t go with [name]Rocky[/name] III as it sounds like he’s part of the movie franchise . . .

For what it’s worth, [name]Robert[/name] [name]Edmund[/name] nn [name]Rocco[/name] or [name]Red[/name] (don’t know if that’s an option) gets my vote

Thanks! Unfortunately, DH hates his middle name, so he doesn’t want to call him by his middle name [name]Edmund[/name] (clearly he doesn’t realize the greatest of the name). If we went with [name]Rocky[/name] as a nickname, it’d just be “[name]Rocky[/name]” and not “[name]Rocky[/name] III” (that’s just my play on the movie franchise). Incidentally, DH is a huge [name]Rocky[/name]/[name]Sly[/name] Stallone fan, so he’s all for that nickname. However, part of me worries about giving my son a stigma or a complex… I wouldn’t want him to feel he had to “live up” to his name. And, I hope he wouldn’t want to fight everyone… or have others challenging him. Is that just an unfounded fear?

Whilst all Rockys I’ve met/know of have been of the rough/tough/buff variety, that definitely does not mean every [name]Rocky[/name] is or has to be. I don’t think having the nick name [name]Rocky[/name] gives him anything brutal to live up to and I think it would be his personality that determines whether he’d fight, not his name.
