Roe short for Roscoe

My husband has been wanting [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] for a boy for a long time (family name). I like the name [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u], but not as much the assumed nn [name_m]Ross[/name_m] (also the nn of the family member). I like the name [name_m]Leo[/name_m], and similar names. What about the nn [name_f]Roe[/name_f] for [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]? I love the sound of it, nameberry only considers it a girl name, and there are a couple negative associations I could imagine people finding.

Opinions please - does [name_f]Roe[/name_f] sound masculine? Does it trigger negative associations?

Thanks!

If you love [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u], then I’d say go for it. NNs tend to emerge organically unless there is a really obvious one e.g. [name_m]Fred[/name_m]/[name_u]Freddie[/name_u] for [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] so I wouldn’t let [name_m]Ross[/name_m] put you off.

To me, [name_f]Roe[/name_f] doesn’t have any negative associations. If pushed I would say it’s more of a girls’ name but I would say the same about [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_u]Kelly[/name_u] and [name_u]Leigh[/name_u] and all of those are completely acceptable on boys.

Thanks for your feedback! I don’t want to pick [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] if there is no alternative nn because I don’t want the family to just automatically assume [name_m]Ross[/name_m] is the name, plus [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] is long enough that I want to be able to shorten it or otherwise just pick a shorter name.

My nephew’s name is [name_m]Roman[/name_m] and we sometimes call him [name_f]Ro[/name_f]. I also know a boy [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] who is occasionally called [name_f]Ro[/name_f]. I think It’s totally fine and works for [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]. I like [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] enough to not use a nickname though

There’s another idea - [name_f]Ro[/name_f] without the E. Thanks

I don’t understand why [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] needs a nickname, but I think [name_f]Ro[/name_f]/[name_f]Roe[/name_f] works just fine.

Thanks for all the feedback. The intention of choosing a nickname is to prevent my husband’s very large family from defaulting right into the nn [name_m]Ross[/name_m], who was a pivotal family member with the name [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I liked this individual, I do not generally like my other experiences with the name [name_m]Ross[/name_m]. I won’t use the name [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] if I think he will end up being called [name_m]Ross[/name_m].
