Roger? Seth? Clive?

We need your help!

Updated list-

I’m due at the end of this month and am struggling to find a name. I posted a while back about how our top choice for a boy, [name_u]Chase[/name_u], was a name I had grown to dislike. We still haven’t come up with a replacement.

While I know that we are having a boy, my husband does not and wants me to keep the gender a secret. I put off talking about names again because I didn’t want to spoil it for him, but now we are getting down to the wire.

I have a list of girls names thrown together and just need boys names narrowed down as he’ll pick from my top 5. We like short, strong yet friendly names that aren’t too popular even though my husband likes the go-to [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], etc .

Is [name_m]Roger[/name_m] too dated? What about [name_m]Clive[/name_m] or [name_u]Seth[/name_u]? I also need help coming up with 2 more!
Thank you.

I think [name_m]Roger[/name_m] is not dated at all. In fact I personally think it’s ripe for revival. It’s on my own list for middle names. [name_u]Seth[/name_u] is a bit common where I live so its novelty wore off (for me). I think [name_m]Clive[/name_m] is a nice name, interesting and not popular.

Some suggestions:
[name_m]Linus[/name_m]
[name_m]Clark[/name_m]
[name_m]Pascal[/name_m]
[name_m]Roland[/name_m]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
[name_m]Cedric[/name_m]
[name_m]Joel[/name_m]
[name_m]Milo[/name_m]
[name_m]Warren[/name_m]

I quite like [name_m]Roland[/name_m] and [name_m]Warren[/name_m]. [name_m]Warren[/name_m] sounds a bit last-namey, though. [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_m]Joel[/name_m] and [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] seem trendy at the moment. [name_m]Linus[/name_m] is a gem! But is it forever linked to the Peanuts character? I don’t think my husband would like it, anyway.
Thank you for your feedback. I am on the fence about [name_u]Seth[/name_u] for the same reasons even though I don’t know any little Seths personally. Since I have to come up with 5 names I’d be happy with, it may not make the list.

Tentative top 5, if I had to choose today

  1. [name_m]Roger[/name_m]
  2. [name_m]Clive[/name_m] (still not sold)
  3. [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
  4. [name_m]Linus[/name_m] (too Peanuts?)
  5. [name_m]Frank[/name_m] (?)

Still hoping to find options I love instead of just like.

[name_m]Hank[/name_m]
[name_m]Ned[/name_m]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m]
[name_m]Clay[/name_m]

My favourite on your list is [name_m]Roger[/name_m]. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Rueben[/name_m]?

I found out the gender with this pregnancy and my husband doesn’t want to know, either! I haven’t heard of many others doing the same - has it been difficult to keep the secret??

We don’t necessarily have the same taste, but you may like:
[name_m]Grant[/name_m]
[name_m]Conrad[/name_m]
[name_m]Nelson[/name_m]
[name_m]Scott[/name_m]
[name_m]Otto[/name_m] I think I suggest this to everyone…
[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]

[name_u]Chase[/name_u] seems very different from the names you have listed now so I wasn’t sure how “old man” sound to go. I do think [name_m]Roger[/name_m] is one of those names that could be due for a comeback, so there’s a risk of it becoming popular soon. I don’t think it would ever be as popular as the names your husband likes, however.

I like [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] from your updated list! Very handsome. Part of me would consider using it for our surprise little due in [name_u]June[/name_u] but it’s far too similar to my daughter, [name_f]Holly[/name_f]. Congrats!!

I prefer [name_u]Seth[/name_u] from your list.

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m]
[name_u]Micah[/name_u]
[name_m]George[/name_m]

I like [name_m]Roger[/name_m], [name_m]Frank[/name_m], and [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]. [name_m]Clive[/name_m] is a little too funky for me. I think of a butler. [name_m]Linus[/name_m] is definitely too Peanuts in my opinion. [name_u]Seth[/name_u] is a little too 90s or something.

[name_m]Alfred[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Bernard[/name_m]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Eugene[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
[name_m]Lewis[/name_m]
[name_m]Otis[/name_m]

Suggested names I’m considering are [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_m]Grant[/name_m] and [name_m]Otis[/name_m]. [name_m]Otis[/name_m] may be too out there for us but [name_m]Otto[/name_m] is too [name_m]German[/name_m] with our last name. [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] is a bit long for my taste but [name_m]Fred[/name_m] on its own seems too plain which is saying a lot because I like plain, straightforward names.

I love [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] but my husband already said no to it previously which is why I’ve taken to [name_m]Clive[/name_m]. [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] is the name of an ex, so it’s not an option. I do love [name_m]Hank[/name_m] but it’s the nickname my nephew goes by. [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is nice but then I think of a sandwich.

It has not been hard for me to keep the gender a secret and as I’m due [name_f]April[/name_f] 28 I don’t think it will be an issue. My coworker was pregnant and didn’t want to know, but her partner did so we got the idea from them. I think it’s easier to keep to yourself if you don’t tell anyone at all instead of letting it slip here and there when you feel like it. Congrats to you, too.

Current top 5

  1. [name_m]Roger[/name_m]
  2. [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
  3. [name_m]Frank[/name_m] or [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]?
  4. [name_m]Grant[/name_m]
  5. [name_m]Clive[/name_m]

[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is growing on me.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Roger[/name_m]! [name_m]Clive[/name_m] is tough for me to imagine on a kid but not a bad name at all. [name_u]Seth[/name_u] is a great name too but when I hear seth I think of a baby named from the 90s. Not a bad thing at all but doesn’t fit into the same category as [name_m]Roger[/name_m] or [name_m]Clive[/name_m] for me. Good luck!

From your list I like [name_m]Roger[/name_m] best. Runner-up for me is [name_m]Grant[/name_m]. I like [name_m]Frank[/name_m] more as a nickname, how do you feel about [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] or [name_u]Francis[/name_u]? If you’re looking for more suggestions I have:

[name_u]Reese[/name_u]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]Troy[/name_m]
[name_m]Geoffrey[/name_m]
[name_m]Walden[/name_m]
[name_m]Cedric[/name_m]
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_m]Maxfield[/name_m]
[name_u]Reed[/name_u]
[name_m]Mitchell[/name_m]
[name_m]Roderick[/name_m]

Of the original 3, I really like [name_m]Roger[/name_m]. [name_u]Seth[/name_u] is nice too, but a distant 2nd. [name_m]Clive[/name_m] sounds too much like a villain to me.

Of the others you are considering, I really like [name_m]Frank[/name_m] and [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]. I agree with the previous poster that I prefer [name_m]Frank[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_u]Francis[/name_u], but it’s nice either way.

Other names that might appeal:

[name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]
[name_u]Roy[/name_u]
[name_m]Raymond[/name_m]
[name_m]Clyde[/name_m]
[name_m]Barney[/name_m]
[name_u]Dexter[/name_u]
[name_m]Albert[/name_m]
[name_m]George[/name_m]
[name_m]Dwight[/name_m]

Saintdollface & dizzy, you both have great suggestions!

The thoughts on [name_m]Clive[/name_m] resonate with me. The villain comment made me laugh! It may be hard for a little boy to wear so that’s definitely worth considering.

I agree that [name_m]Frank[/name_m] is better suited as a nickname but I am not fond of [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] because it sounds like a surname to me. I don’t know if we could warm up to [name_u]Francis[/name_u] because my husband’s grandmother is [name_f]Frances[/name_f], but I’d like it for someone else.

We both liked [name_u]Reed[/name_u] (spelt [name_u]Reid[/name_u]) and usually don’t put much stock in name meanings, but we found it funny that it meant “red-haired”. Our boy will most likely get my dominant, dark features so the name lost it’s appeal for us.

I will think on the recent suggested names and put a new top 5 together. Thank you so so much for helping. It’s Interesting that you’ve both suggested [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Philip[/name_m] as they are names I’ve considered before.

Tentative top 5 but open to more suggestions

  1. [name_m]Roger[/name_m]
  2. [name_m]Raymond[/name_m] (really like [name_u]Ray[/name_u])
  3. [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
  4. [name_m]Grant[/name_m]
  5. [name_m]Simon[/name_m]

[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is still in the running as is [name_m]Frank[/name_m]. [name_m]Philip[/name_m] may work it’s way in, too. Thoughts?

I really love [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m] but do not think it goes with our last name starting with L.

My husband wants ten names now so that he has more to choose from.

In no real order

  1. [name_m]Roger[/name_m]
  2. [name_m]Raymond[/name_m], [name_u]Ray[/name_u]
  3. [name_m]Simon[/name_m]
  4. [name_m]Grant[/name_m]
  5. [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
  6. [name_m]Frank[/name_m] or [name_m]Fred[/name_m] ([name_m]Frederick[/name_m])
  7. [name_m]Philip[/name_m] (on the fence)
  8. [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] (on the fence)
  9. ?
  10. ?

Really love [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m] and [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] but can’t use with our last name. List is not final because I’m hoping to find 10 names I love, not just like. Thanks!

I’m not a fan of [name_m]Roger[/name_m], but I do really love [name_u]Seth[/name_u], followed by the handsome [name_m]Clive[/name_m].

Popular opinion has been that [name_m]Clive[/name_m] isn’t fitting for a younger boy, though he could grow into it. It’s not as approachable. I still like it a lot but wouldn’t want to choose a name that most people see as off putting so I’m cautious to have it on the list.
