Roman?

My husband and I both really like the name [name_m]Roman[/name_m] but the meaning of it is throwing me off. [name_m]Roman[/name_m] means a person from [name_m]Rome[/name_m]. What is the first thing you think of when you hear the name [name_m]Roman[/name_m]? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think of actual [name_m]Roman[/name_m] people? Is naming my son [name_m]Roman[/name_m] the same as naming him Russian or American?

Thank you!!

I don’t think it’s the same, because it has a history of being used as a name. There is a soccer player called [name_m]Juan[/name_m] [name_m]Roman[/name_m] Riquelme (my brother is a sports fan).

Being a history buff, I immediately think of [name_m]Rome[/name_m] and Ancient [name_m]Rome[/name_m]. It sounds similar to me to picking the name Greece. I have heard of people with the name before. For me, I have a strong association.

I think [name_m]Roman[/name_m] is perfectly fine to use as a name. It was actually fairly high on my list, until it got quite popular where I live. I don’t make the association like I would if you named your son Russian or American, like you said.

I love the name [name_m]Roman[/name_m]-it’s our son’s middle name. I love it so much that I almost wish we hadn’t used it for a middle name, so that we could use it as a first name for our new little one! Go for it!!

My birth name was [name_f]Brittany[/name_f]. It means born in [name_m]Britain[/name_m]. I most certainly was not lol. I from time to time thought it was "dumb’ I didn’t have a meaning but only a few times I recall thinking this, other than that I just do not care lol. Most people do not care that much about their names, esp. boys I’d say more than girls.
"

Thanks so much everyone for your thoughts. I really appreciate it!!!

Thank you!! Your response was very helpful since your name has a similar meaning!

It’s fine. [name_m]Roman[/name_m] is a traditional name that has been in use for centuries. It’s not comparable to naming your child Russian or American. It’s more like [name_m]Norman[/name_m] or [name_m]Scott[/name_m].

we considered [name_m]Roman[/name_m], love the way it sounds, but everytime I said it I had images of gladiators and lions eating people. not exactly what I was going for with my baby boy. So, we chose [name_m]Rome[/name_m] instead. [name_m]Rome[/name_m] makes me think of the place (obviously) not the people, the rich culture, art, architecture…It is also not commonly used as a first name, but doesn’t sound unfamiliar or strange. Warning:super traditional folks won’t like it. Bonus: we have had tons of positive feedback from nearly everyone under the age of 45.

Thanks so much for your reply. [name_m]Rome[/name_m] is a really nice name! I’m sure if we choose [name_m]Roman[/name_m] it will be one of his nicknames.

have you made any progress on this? I think its really up to a husband and wife to agree together or they’ll be heading for divorce eventually. what does hubby want?

amynikole - How are you going on this? I think both hubby and wife need to equally agree or you’ll be heading for divorce sooner rather than later. There will always be hidden resentment.

What does your hubby think? Its really important to be in complete agreement on these things.
