Roommates and Friend Need Names

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! So, I’ve started planning the sequel to a novel I’ve been working on for over a year. The story has magic elements, but all the characters I need names for are normal humans. In the sequel the main character goes off to college away from most of her family and friends. I need names for her three roommates and one girl she runs into in class that she knows from elementary school, but hasn’t talked to since first grade. The story takes place at a small private university in the Southern United States.

Roommate 1: She is really into books and movies and pop culture type stuff. I’m thinking a communications or business major, something along those lines. She has straightish dirty blonde hair, freckles, and greenish eyes. She, in general, has two modes, jeans and t-shirts and messy buns or pretty sundresses with perfect makeup etc. Switches from really enthusiastic about everything to really lazy and done with life. I was thinking [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f], but I really have no reason why, I just love the name [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f], but I’m not sure it fits. Suggestions?

Roommate 2: She is bookish and quiet, with straight brown hair down past her butt. Very smart, but doesn’t really show it because she doesn’t want to seem snobby. The only thing that stands out to other people about her is tha tshe dresses rather strangely, wears a lot of casual dresses and cardigans with knee high socks and these headbands/circlets she makes herself. She’s artsy, but she hides it because she’s been told that ‘smart people aren’t supposed to be artistic’. I’m thinking she has social anxiety. the only name I came up with is [name_f]Kenna[/name_f], but I’d love suggestions.

Roommate 3: She is widely popular and fiercely girly, kind of a party girl, with black curly hair and green eyes. Once she makes a friend she won’t let go. She’s way more than what most people see. Went to private Catholic or Episcopal (haven’t decided which) school her whole life. Intimidates people at first, but she’s really rather sweet. For her name I’m set on a double name. My favorite would be [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]-[name_f]Jane[/name_f], but I already have a character named [name_f]Lila[/name_f], so that won’t work. I’ve considered [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Alice[/name_f], or a [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-family last name, as is a southern tradition, but I’m not sold on anything.

[name_m]Friend[/name_m] From Hometown: This girl is a tomboy, super country/redneck, I haven’t really nailed her personality down yet. She’s a realist. I have no idea what she looks like or anything. She’s named after her grandmothers, so I’m thinking older, rather outdated names. I thought [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] [name_f]Drusilla[/name_f], nn [name_u]Dru[/name_u], but those are my grandmother’s names, so I’m not sure I want characters named after my own family, but I’m feeling a boyish nickname.

Thanks for even just reading this, I know it’s a lot! I can’t start writing until I have this planning done.

Roommate One: I like [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f], but a few other suggestions: [name_u]Blaire[/name_u], [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f], or [name_f]Marina[/name_f].

Roommate Two: I know a girl named [name_f]Kenna[/name_f] who is the exact opposite of the character, but I can still picture it on the roommate. I think it fits your character.

Roommate Three: I like [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Alice[/name_f] a lot! Other similar style girl’s names include [name_f]Alice[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Anne[/name_f], or [name_f]Anne[/name_f]-[name_f]Marie[/name_f], but [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Alice[/name_f] is still my favorite.

Hometown Girl: I like [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] [name_f]Drusilla[/name_f], but if you don’t want to use your grandmothers, here are a few others: [name_f]Helen[/name_f] ([name_m]Len[/name_m]/[name_m]Lenny[/name_m]?), [name_f]Joy[/name_f] (sorry no nicknames really), [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] ([name_u]Jo[/name_u]?), [name_f]Carol[/name_f] ([name_f]Carrie[/name_f]?), or [name_f]Sally[/name_f]. Some of these names are also used for younger people too, so they might not all be too “old-people”.

Thanks for the help! I like [name_f]Edie[/name_f] for roommate 1. And it’s funny you mention [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f], because my name is [name_f]Kaitlin[/name_f]! So that won’t work, lol. [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is a good one too.

I think I’m set with [name_f]Kenna[/name_f] for roommate 2, thanks for helping me stay sure.

For roommate 3 I like [name_f]Alice[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_f]Anne[/name_f]-[name_f]Marie[/name_f], but I think maybe [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Alice[/name_f] is still my favorite for that one too. Maybe, I’m so conflicted! Thanks for the suggestions.

I like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] for the friend. What about [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] (or some kind of name like that) [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] with the nickname [name_u]Jo[/name_u]? I like [name_u]Jo[/name_u].

Thanks for the help! I’m sorry I’m so all over the place!

I like [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] for roommate number one, and [name_f]Kenna[/name_f] sounds good as well. You could also do [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Alice[/name_f] for the third and for the friend, you can do [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] nn [name_u]Alex[/name_u].

Thanks for the suggestion! I think I will go with [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f], [name_f]Kenna[/name_f], and [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Alice[/name_f] for the roommates, but I’m still not sure about the friend. [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]/[name_u]Alex[/name_u] is a good suggestion, but I’m not sure it’s quite right. I think the character needs a more old-ladyish name.

For the friend:
[name_f]Georgina[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], [name_f]Georgette[/name_f], etc nn [name_u]Georgie[/name_u]
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f] nn [name_u]Theo[/name_u]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] nn [name_u]Win[/name_u]
[name_f]Antonia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Toni[/name_f]
[name_f]Eugenia[/name_f] nn [name_u]Gene[/name_u]

Let me know if these help or not!

I like all of these! You’ve given me a lot of great options to consider. Thanks! I like [name_u]Georgie[/name_u] and [name_f]Toni[/name_f] the best.

Roommate 1:

[name_f]Eviana[/name_f]
[name_u]Arden[/name_u]
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f]
[name_f]Angela[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariana[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Erika[/name_f]
[name_f]Annabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_u]Whitney[/name_u]
[name_u]Allie[/name_u]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]

Roommate 2:

[name_f]Laurel[/name_f]
Chali
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Tess[/name_f]
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
[name_u]Delaney[/name_u]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Michaela[/name_f]
[name_u]Jess[/name_u]
[name_f]Marissa[/name_f]

Roommate 3:

[name_f]Chloe[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]-[name_u]Wren[/name_u]
[name_f]Milla[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]-[name_u]Ashley[/name_u]
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]-[name_u]Wren[/name_u]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]-[name_f]Anne[/name_f]
[name_f]Erika[/name_f]-[name_u]Lee[/name_u]
[name_u]Abby[/name_u]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]-[name_u]Evan[/name_u]
[name_f]Marina[/name_f]-[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Eva[/name_f]-[name_f]Marie[/name_f]

Hometown [name_m]Friend[/name_m].
Ideas:
[name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] - Grandmothers could be [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] and [name_f]Rosie[/name_f].
[name_m]Jordy[/name_m] - Grandmothers could be [name_f]Georgina[/name_f] and [name_f]Judy[/name_f].
[name_u]Blake[/name_u] - Grandmothers could be [name_f]Blanche[/name_f] and [name_f]Callie[/name_f].
[name_f]Alfre[/name_f]
[name_u]Mattie[/name_u]
[name_f]Marielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Nanette[/name_f]
[name_f]Jamilla[/name_f]
Zaraiyah

For roommate one I would use [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]. It’s perfect for when she is all dressed up, yet can be called [name_f]Cassie[/name_f] for when she’s not.
Roommate two I would pick [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]. I have a friend by that name and she is just like that (and she’s really self-conscious.)
For roommate three I would pick [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]. It sounds very modern and fancy to me.
For the friend I would pick [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] which could be shortened to [name_u]Sam[/name_u] or Sama. I hope this helped!!

Roommate one: I was thinking maybe [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] or [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]. The names are pretty different but it depends what point of her character you want to emphasize.
Roommate two: Her name could be [name_f]Catharina[/name_f]-pronounced cat~er~ina-with the nickname [name_f]Cat[/name_f] for her kooky side.
Roommate three: [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Alice[/name_f] is cute. [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f] is also really pretty, and I think it fits her super bubbly personality
Hometown friend: As soon I read your description, I knew [name_f]Pauline[/name_f] was absolutely perfect for the main character’s hometown friend. The nickname [name_m]Paulie[/name_m] is a good tomboy name too.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps with your story. [name_f]Happy[/name_f] writing!

For roommate 2, when you descirbed her the first name that came to mind was [name_u]Avery[/name_u]. Since you’re set on [name_f]Kenna[/name_f], thoguh, I figure you could use it as last/middle name.

I don’t like [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Alice[/name_f] for roommate 3 though. doesn’t sound like the character you described. I like anniebrown01’s suggestion of [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f], nn [name_f]Gigi[/name_f].

For the hometown friend, I’d use [name_f]Drusilla[/name_f] nn [name_u]Dru[/name_u] as her first name, since you want an old lady name with a boyish nn. Or (this is you’re in the US) I’d check to social security name list for the years around when the grandma’s would’ve been born to look for popular names. You can search by decade, which is a really cool feature. I checked the popular names from the 1930’s, and within the first fifty results I spotted [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_f]Geraldine[/name_f] and [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] and many other really cool old lady names. Top names of the 1930s

@amy1512 Thanks so much for the long list! I think [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] and [name_f]Tess[/name_f] would fit Roommate 2 but [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] is too close to another character, so it would get confusing and personally like [name_f]Kenna[/name_f] a little bit better than [name_f]Tess[/name_f]. I like the way you approached the Hometown [name_m]Friend[/name_m], combining the names instead of just a first and middle. That’s a good idea!

@addy z That’s exactly what I was thinking with [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]! Calling her more [name_f]Cassie[/name_f] when she’s lazy and [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] when she’s dressed up. Thanks for the suggestions!

@anniebrown01 [name_f]Catharina[/name_f] is a really pretty name! But I’m not sure it is quite right for this character. I might use it for another one, though, because it is gorgeous. I really like [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f] but it’s too close to another character for me to be comfortable using. Thank you so much for your suggestions!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to reply. I’m going to sit down with a list of everyone’s suggestions one more time and see if I can lock in some names so I can start writing. Y’all have been a great help!

Thanks so much for responding! I’m so glad you suggested [name_u]Avery[/name_u]. I haven’t even begun to think about last names yet, but [name_f]Kenna[/name_f] [name_u]Avery[/name_u] is perfect!!

I am still slightly torn on [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Alice[/name_f]. For me, I know a lot of girls with names similiar to [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Alice[/name_f] that are the way I described, more or less, that to me it seems to fit. I like [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f], but unfortunately I have another character with a name that’s too similiar.

Thanks for the link!! I’m really torn between [name_f]Drusilla[/name_f] nn [name_u]Dru[/name_u] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] nn [name_u]Jo[/name_u]. I think I’m slightly more on the [name_u]Dru[/name_u] side, but I’m going to do as you suggested and look over some lists and see if anything else jumps out at me. Thanks so much!
