So lately I have been liking the name rosamond, and I have read that the proper pronuciation is raz-a-mund. However, I naturally say rosa-mund, is that fine? Any combo sugesstions?
Thanks!

This name has been growing on me, but only to the point where I think it’s cute. I prefer the spelling [name]Rosamund[/name], since (from what I’ve researched) it’s the original spelling and is also the phonetic spelling (of the pronunciation you want). I think [name]Rosa[/name]-mund is fine as a pronunciation since people here say [name]Rosa[/name] as rose-ah, and seeing [name]Rosamund[/name], they see [name]Rosa[/name] with mund at the end. Also, when I looked it up on Forvo, the results came up as “Fair [name]Rosamund[/name]” and the American speaker said it as [name]Rosa[/name]-mund, while the British speaker said it a little more like [name]Raz[/name]-a-mund, but I think it’s due to his accent.
Wow, it’s tough to think of middle names! I think it’s easier to think of first names to go with [name]Rosamond[/name], lol.

Any other comments?
I love almost all ‘[name]Rose[/name]’ names, but just cannot get over the ‘mound’ part of [name]Rosamond[/name]/[name]Rosamund[/name]. I think [name]Elise[/name] is pretty as a middle name.
[name]Rosamund[/name] (pronounced the way you mentioned, rosa-mund) is my first name, though I usually go by [name]Rose[/name] or [name]Rosie[/name]. My middle name is [name]Catherine[/name].

@aillidh I totally understand. I used to feel the same way about the name.However, I now find it very pretty.
@rosietoes I love your daughter’s name. I love [name]Rosamund[/name] [name]Isabelle[/name] and [name]Rosamund[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]. Thank you.
Any other ideas?
Negative We’re perfectly capable of getting our tongues to say ‘roes-a-mund’ but the correct pronunciation of [name]Rosamond[/name] - an English name - is ‘roz-a-mund’ so that’s how we say it.
I pronounce it [name]Rosa[/name]-mond as well and I think that’s fine! Super adorable name with cute nickname potential!
hehe, sorry about that I’ve never been out of the states and don’t have much experience with British accents other than in movies. In the recording, it sounded like a mix of both pronunciations to me, so I wasn’t sure which way he was pronouncing it.
Thank you so much everyone
I’ve only ever seen it written ‘[name]Rosamund[/name],’ and I’ve only ever heard it pronounced ‘[name]RO[/name]-za-mund.’
I like [name]Rosamond[/name] I think she’s very graceful and sweet.
I’m okay on the raz-a-mond pronunciation but I think the [name]Rosamund[/name] pronunciation of ‘roz-a-mund’ may fit what your looking for…
Our eldest daughter is named [name]Rosamund[/name]. Her middle name is [name]Hazel[/name]. We pronounce it “[name]Raz[/name]-ah-mund”, but most people in the U.S. that we’ve encountered pronounce it with the rose emphasis (“Roes-ah-mund”). Her nickname is [name]Rosie[/name]. We absolutely love the name, but it’s rare in the U.S., so it helps to have a familiar nickname. I think [name]Rosamond[/name] is an appealing spelling, but prefer [name]Rosamund[/name], as it seems a bit easier to say.
I prefer the spelling [name]Rosamund[/name], however don’t particularly like it as a name.
Any name with [name]Ros[/name]- at the beginning I read like [name]Rose[/name], not Rahz/Rohz. I prefer all [name]Ros[/name]- names with the flower pronunciation, and if given the option would pronounce them that way. I consider it up to the parents’/child’s discretion, and if I ever use one of those names it would be pronounced the way I like it, because I said so
I prefer the [name]Rosamond[/name] spelling and firmly believe that the pronunciation is up to you.
@kelchristmas your daughters have such pretty names. Thank you everyone for your opinions. I like both the spellings so I go back and forth which I like more but I am not close to having kids yet so I don’t have to worry about that:).
I prefer [name]Rosamond[/name] over [name]Rosamund[/name]. Somehow I find [name]Rosamund[/name] older than [name]Rosamond[/name], and the latter brighter than the first:)
[name]Rosamond[/name] [name]May[/name], [name]Rosamond[/name] [name]Pearl[/name], [name]Rosamond[/name] [name]Anne[/name], [name]Rosamond[/name] [name]Arabella[/name], [name]Rosamond[/name] [name]Iseult[/name]
I prefer the rose pronunciation but I think the other is actually considered more correct.
I wish it weren’t. I like the rose connection and the Latin “rosa mundi” which means “rose of the world” and was used in period to refer to ‘Fair [name]Rosamund[/name]’ - suggesting that it was close enough in sound to make the reference/pun work.
And the Latin definitely refers to roses, though the original Germanic name doesn’t. There is a type of rose called rosa mundi that is an antique, heritage cultivar, and it’s a hardy plant with striped flowers. Because of those points, I prefer the spelling [name]Rosamund[/name].
I love the concept of using the name but rahz-ah-mund is less appealing to me in terms of sound - and I am shy about sounding like that mother who gives her kid a name she doesn’t know how to say properly.
@svea thank you. I like [name]Rosamond[/name] [name]Anne[/name] and [name]Rosamond[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]. I too feel that [name]Rosamond[/name] feels younger and softer however I still like [name]Rosamund[/name].
@stripedsocks, thanks for some of the history behind the name. That is one of the reasons why I love it. I understand what you are saying about the pronuciation issues, however it seems like it wouldn’t be a huge issue.
