Trying to clean up my shortlist for baby #2, a brother for [name_f]Roslyn[/name_f] ([name_f]Rosie[/name_f]). [name_m]Robert[/name_m] is an honor name, and while I’m currently leaning towards using it as a middle name, I’m debating on scratching it off my firsts completely. [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] is such a darling, spunky name, but paired with [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], is it just too saccharine? Does it pose a risk when baby #3 shows up as I feel like the names would have to match?
I think [name_m]Robert[/name_m] is a very timeless name and with the nn [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] it’s very suitable for a child today. As a sibling to [name_f]Roselyn[/name_f] nn [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] I think it’s actually quite fitting BUT I would put [name_m]Robert[/name_m] on the birth certificate so someday he’s Dr. [name_m]Robert[/name_m] Surname and not Dr. [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] ___ my reason is that it grows with the person forever he can be [name_u]Robbie[/name_u], [name_m]Rob[/name_m], [name_m]Robert[/name_m]. But yes I think [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] & [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] are cute and not too cute.
As nicknames, they’re darling! The different vowel sounds make it okay to my ears (assuming you pronounce [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] like the plant). He can always be [name_u]Bobby[/name_u] or [name_u]Robin[/name_u] instead.
I think it’s fine. My brother and I had names that were just as similar and it was never a problem. Occasionally someone would ask if it was on purpose and the answer was no, my younger brother was given a family name. Our third sibling broke the pattern.
Up to you. It not quite the same, but, my dog and my son both have R names. It was unintended and it’s a mouthful and we often call each by the other’s name, especially when they’ve gotten into mischief! Other than that, I don’t think the shared initials are a dealbreaker. My concern would be the (self-applied) pressure to stick with the pattern should a third sibling come along, like you said. I tend to prefer family names in the middle spot just so the children get first names for themselves, for what that’s worth.
Oh, also, [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] is a very classic combination and I think [name_m]Tommy[/name_m] has a lot of the same characteristics of [name_u]Robbie[/name_u].
I think [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] and [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] go well together as just two siblings, but if you have more children, the names might feel too similar when compared to other siblings.
Thanks for the input, all! I didn’t think of what a PP said about getting the names mixed up-I could totally see that happening. I think we’ll go with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m], and let any nn figure itself out.
