I’m due in [name]June[/name] with a baby girl and I’m stuck on names so I’d love some input!
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Ruby[/name], but I’m concerned it may have “peaked” like six years ago. Plus it’s #75 in [name]CA[/name], so I’m also afraid it’s too popular. I also love [name]Sawyer[/name], but I’m worried it’s a trendy choice, and that it’s similar to trendy names I dislike ([name]Madison[/name], [name]Taylor[/name], etc.). This is my first baby, so I don’t quite have a gauge on what’s popular in my area (SoCal). Which name do you like better?
We’re also considering [name]Miller[/name], which may be more unique than [name]Sawyer[/name], but along the same lines. (However, I don’t love the nn [name]Millie[/name].) My husband also likes [name]Sailor[/name] (I think it’s a bit much, though, considering we don’t even own a boat and we’re also thinking about [name]Juniper[/name]. Last name starts with L and is hispanic, FYI, so can’t consider L names or names that end in L. Any good, unique choices I’m overlooking that sound like [name]Ruby[/name] or [name]Sawyer[/name]? I like vintage, short, sassy, and (usually) boyish names
Thanks, everyone! I’m excited to finally post and get some input.
This is tough, [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Sawyer[/name] are such different choices to me! But I like both. I don’t think that [name]Ruby[/name] peaked years ago, not at all… (but I’m over on the east coast). If anything, my worry with [name]Ruby[/name] is that it’s getting popular now and in the coming years may even get into the top spots with [name]Lily[/name], [name]Ava[/name], [name]Emma[/name], etc. [name]Sawyer[/name] is cute. I do usually think boy for [name]Sawyer[/name] but have heard it on a girl as well. In the hussel and bussel of my house, though, we always shorten everyone’s names to one syllable (not intentionally, just happens!), and “Soy” puts me off a bit. [name]Sailor[/name] is a GP of mine, I admit, but I’ve known two dogs so it’s one of those names that’s just out by association for me. Maybe a middle name? I like [name]Juniper[/name] a lot though! And nn [name]Junie[/name] just makes me swoon
A few more names that may be up your alley…
[name]Linden[/name] (nn [name]Linnie[/name])
[name]Hadley[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Auden[/name]
[name]Morgan[/name]
[name]Briar[/name]
[name]Piper[/name]
[name]Lila[/name]
[name]Etta[/name]
[name]Cassie[/name]
[name]Scarlett[/name] (thinking [name]Ruby[/name]… I don’t know!) haha
[name]Just[/name] random thoughts but hope I could help.
I like [name]Ruby[/name] better by a long shot…it is a great name! [name]How[/name] about [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Sawyer[/name]? I love [name]Juniper[/name], too!
Thanks! I really like a lot of those names. I was just thinking [name]Hadley[/name] the other day, but for some reason it makes me think of Toddlers and Tiaras, ha!
[name]Ruby[/name]- This is the perfect short, spunky, vintage name. It’s the first name that comes to mind with that description.
[name]Sawyer[/name]- I would rather see a popular name get used thank a trendy name. [name]Sawyer[/name] has no substance and is definitely a boys name to me.
[name]Miller[/name]- I would not use this. [name]Just[/name] think of all the beer jokes.
[name]Sailor[/name]- A bit strange and I’m not such a fan of occupational names for girls.
[name]Juniper[/name]- [name]Love[/name] this! Different and unique but not weird.
I am having a girl and love boyish names as well. I am all for them… my daughter is [name]Dakota[/name] and we were considering all kinds of tomboyish names for this girl. Ultimately we decided on [name]Taylor[/name]… not b/c it is trendy but b/c it is my brother’s middle name who is severly handicapped and in bad health right now on his deathbed. And it goes well with our other daughter’s also semi-unisex name.
But if this had been a boy, we were going to use [name]Sawyer[/name]. I definitely think of [name]Sawyer[/name] as a boy name.
Some other names I love though (since we have similar taste) are:
I love [name]Juniper[/name] and think the nn [name]June[/name] is adorable!
Also, my son’s name is [name]Oakley[/name] and it recently seems to be becoming a very popular name for girls now where I live. I obviously first thought of it as a boy’s name, but now that I’ve been several little girls with the name, I might have considered it if we’d never had our boy.
[name]Ruby[/name] by a [name]LONG[/name] shot. It’s quirky, sweet and the nickname [name]Rue[/name] is really great.
[name]Sawyer[/name] and [name]Miller[/name] are both so incredibly masculine, trendy and will be SO dated in a couple years. [name]Just[/name] not attractive.
I like [name]Sawyer[/name] and [name]Sailor[/name] the best. I’ve never understood the popularity of [name]Ruby[/name]… I’ve always thought it sounded too country-ish. [name]Juniper[/name] is okay. I like the sound of [name]Miller[/name], but I would avoid it.
[name]Juniper[/name] and [name]Sawyer[/name] are my favs…here’s some more:
[name]Willow[/name]
[name]Clover[/name]
[name]Summer[/name]
[name]Sky[/name]
[name]Pearl[/name]
As a teenberry in SoCal, I can tell you that I know 3 Rubys - 14, 7, and 3, if you’re wondering. I adore the name [name]Ruby[/name] and I definitely don’t think it’s too dated or too trendy. It’s on my long list. As for [name]Sawyer[/name], I’m biased. I know 2 Sawyers, both boys. (And one was my first boyfriend!) I love the name, but it’s firmly in the blue column for me. I’m not a fan of [name]Miller[/name] or [name]Sailor[/name], they’re a bit masculine for my taste. And I do like [name]Juniper[/name], but I don’t love it.
I really like your style, and I love the idea of a spunky, interesting, but still heard-of name. As a Los [name]Angeles[/name] berry, I think your style will fit in nicely with the other babies at Mommy-And-Me. For whatever reason, I keep coming back to C names for you. Is that something you’d like to pursue?
Ideas:
[name]Carla[/name] / [name]Carly[/name] / [name]Carlie[/name] / [name]Charlie[/name] / [name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Beck[/name] / [name]Rebecca[/name] / [name]Becca[/name] / [name]Becky[/name]
[name]Zoe[/name] / [name]Zoey[/name]
[name]Jade[/name]
I know you said you didn’t like [name]Taylor[/name], but what about [name]Tayla[/name]?
[name]Saffron[/name]
[name]Cassie[/name] / [name]Cassandra[/name]
[name]India[/name]
[name]Scarlet[/name] / [name]Scarlett[/name]
[name]Cora[/name] / [name]Coralie[/name] / [name]Coraline[/name] / [name]Clara[/name] / [name]Claire[/name]
[name]Tess[/name] / [name]Tessa[/name] / [name]Teresa[/name]
[name]Olive[/name]
[name]Emmy[/name] / [name]Emmeline[/name] (or any variation)
[name]Paloma[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name] is very popular in [name]California[/name]. I met a lot in all kinds of age categories. I think it will grow in popularity country-wide, especially because of the character on the show Once Upon a Time, which has many viewers.
I think [name]Sawyer[/name] is cute, because of [name]Tom[/name] [name]Sawyer[/name], but as an occupational name, it’s a bit blah. “wood cutter”. I think [name]Fletcher[/name] and [name]Archer[/name] would be better choices, because it springs to mind a lady warrior who makes arrows or who goes about hunting in the woods with her bow, like the lovely goddess [name]Artemis[/name].
I’m one of those strange folks who can’t settle [name]Miller[/name] as a first name. I’ve just known so many people with it as a surname. I also think of the [name]Miller[/name]'s Tale in the Canterbury Tales.
[name]Juniper[/name] is gorgeous. It’s one of my favourite names of all time.
[name]Just[/name] my 2c worth.
When I read your thread title I had to reread it. At first I wondered why you were choosing between a girl name and a boy name.
[name]Ruby[/name] is all girl yet sassy too. To me, [name]Sawyer[/name] is a boy name. I would not like to be a woman introducing myself as [name]Sawyer[/name]. I wouldn’t want people to read my name and assume I was male or ‘not know’.
[name]Ruby[/name] is a keeper- it suits a range of ages.
From the names you mention, I definitely think [name]Ruby[/name] is a winner. [name]Juniper[/name] is a bit different, like one PP i like it but don’t swoon over it.
