Rue for a boy?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Berries,

Nameberry’s entry on [name_u]Rue[/name_u] clearly says it’s better for a girl. Thoughts on this? I feel it’s not that different from [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_m]Ronan[/name_m], [name_u]Rory[/name_u], etc. and could work well for a boy… Is it just the Hunger Games association that’s swinging it to the girls?

I love [name_u]Rue[/name_u] on a boy, I think it can sound equally as masculine and feminine.
I personally would spell it Reu (bonus: less association with the Hunger Games character), and use it as a nickname for [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]. But [name_u]Rue[/name_u] is just as lovely.
A suggestion would be to use a full name that you love just as much or more than [name_u]Rue[/name_u], so that you have the full name (and possibly more nicknames) to fall back on just in case.

I agree on using a longer name like [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] and using it as a nickname. I think it is a gender neutral name that seems like a nickname. I worry a little about the “you’ll rue the day” type of association but it’s not a bad name. I like the short, strong ones. [name_u]Cal[/name_u] comes to mind.

I like it as a NN for a definite boys name but for me (because of Hunger Games) [name_u]Rue[/name_u] itself is more for a girl.

There is no reason [name_u]Rue[/name_u] can’t be used for a boy, although I do have a serious issue with a child being named Regret. [name_u]Rue[/name_u] means regret. It is not a good name for a person.

I think it would be cuter as a nickname. I’m not sure it would age well as I’ve never met an adult [name_u]Rue[/name_u] so I can’t really picture it on a man or a woman.
That’s just me though!

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_u]Rue[/name_u] for a boy! I agree it’s no different from [name_u]Rory[/name_u] or [name_u]Rowan[/name_u].
Like [name_u]Sage[/name_u], I don’t think you need a more formal name.
There’s the ‘regret’ meaning, but I think most people can look past that, or learn to look past that.

I think people initially think of [name_u]Rue[/name_u] as a girls name but I don’t see why it cant be a boys name. I think [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] would be a great way to get the nickname [name_u]Rue[/name_u].

I worry about the meaning, although there’s always the french translation, meaning “street”. I have an adult friend named [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] who goes by “Rew” and I’ve always loved that. I agree that maybe Rew or Reu would be better. It also SOUNDS like Roo, like from [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] the Pooh, so I’d consider that association, as well.
