Rufus or Rupert?

My husband and I can’t decide between these two names because we like them equally! Could you tell us which one you prefer and why?

We’ve been considering Nettle for his middle name, so [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] Nettle or [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] Nettle. This baby will be joining [name_f]Frida[/name_f], [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f], [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] and Hemlock. Thanks!

I think [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] Nettle flows best, the softer F balances out the sharpness of Nettle, although out of the two firsts I prefer [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]. He’s sweet, boyish a bit nerdy, and a perfect fit for your other children’s names imo. It’s a difficult one, but I’d probably choose [name_m]Rupert[/name_m].

(Btw, your children have such gorgeous names! I especially love Hemlock, I’ve always debated whether he’d be usable irl, but I don’t think I’m brave enough.)

Tough one. I like [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] more as a name but [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] Nettle sounds a lot better as a combo, so I think I’m going to go with [name_m]Rufus[/name_m]

I love both names, tried to sell both to my husband, who would not go for it. I slightly prefer [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] as I’m not crazy about the [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] Murdoch association. Good luck.

With middle name Nettle, I lean towards [name_m]Rufus[/name_m]. I also like [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] slightly more in your overall sibset.

I can definitely see why this is a tough choice though, both work excellently!

As popular as [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] has become, I’m one of those who still struggles to get over associating it more with dogs than human boys.

I much prefer [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]. [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] feels like a very goofy name to me and it does rhyme with doofus. [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] feels a bit more fresh and fun.

Definitely [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]. [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] is still in pet name territory for me.

I prefer [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]. It’s classic & sophisticated & not often heard, which I think is a huge positive! I can picture it on a baby, a cheeky toddler and a grown man. I feel it’s a very distinguished and handsome choice

I prefer [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] Nettle! [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]. I think I know too many canine [name_m]Rufus[/name_m]’, and that clouds my judgment on the name.

Thank you so much! I’m leaning towards [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], too, as I was talking to my niece the other day, and she said [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] makes her think of rats.

And naming him [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] would let me call him Roo or [name_m]Bear[/name_m]. So cute!

Thank you for your kind words! It surprises me how well-received Hemlock is - we spent the whole pregnancy worrying if it is too out there, but decided to go with it because we both adore it. Some older relatives still think it’s a little crazy but other than that, the feedback we’ve received was overwhelmingly positive. Some people mishear it as [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] but it’s not a big deal because we are [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] fans. We call him [name_m]Huck[/name_m] for short - it’s a nod to [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m] [name_u]Finn[/name_u], as [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m] was our second option.
