Rufus

What do you think of the name [name]Rufus[/name]? It’s been on my mind lately and I wanted to see what people thought of this name.
I’m liking it more and more lately. I tend to like classic as well as vintage names, and I think [name]Rufus[/name] fits in pretty well with many of my favorite names.
Any suggestions as far as middle names?

Thanks in advance!

I loved [name]Rufus[/name]! I love it’s vintage feel and [name]Rufus[/name] in the Bible was an early believer, and his father was [name]Simon[/name] of Cyrene, the man who carried [name]Jesus[/name]’ cross to Golgatha. I always loved the history of his name, and I recently fell for it as a way to honor my grandmother ([name]Ruth[/name]). It’s easy to honor everyone in my family on the feminine side of my list, but really hard to honor anyone on my boys’ list, so I thought it might be a cool possibility. The more I thought about it, though, the more I couldn’t imagine using it. It sounded too much like a dog’s name to me, and I couldn’t hear the name without thinking of “roofies”, as in the date rape drug. :frowning: Ultimately, those were dealbreakers for me (even though I love and would use a lot of human “dog names” like [name]Bailey[/name], [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Bella[/name], [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Molly[/name], [name]Sadie[/name], etc.).

I would love to see someone else use it, though! [name]Rufus[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] was my first idea, but since [name]Rufus[/name]'s brother in the Bible was an [name]Alexander[/name] it seems a bit matchy to me. What about [name]Rufus[/name] [name]Theodore[/name] or [name]Rufus[/name] [name]Constantine[/name]?

Good luck!

I want to like [name]Rufus[/name], I really do. It just feels really “doggy” to me, and it reminds me of roofies. That said, I do think it fits in well with most of your other favorites, especially your boy names.

I like [name]Rufus[/name] and think it goes well with the return of the old, classic Latin names.

[name]Rufus[/name] [name]Edwin[/name]
[name]Rufus[/name] [name]Matthew[/name]
[name]Rufus[/name] [name]Oswald[/name]
[name]Rufus[/name] [name]Dashiell[/name]
[name]Rufus[/name] [name]Orion[/name]
[name]Rufus[/name] [name]Scott[/name]
[name]Rufus[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]

This, basically.

I love this name but second the concerns. It also rhymes with doofus : (. However, it is very handsome - it was the name of a great-uncle of mine, and I always loved saying it. I think it can overcome these limitations, but it is a riskier choice than some.

You might be better served honoring [name]Ruth[/name] with a girl [name]Ruby[/name].

I see [name]Silas[/name] is a middle for you, I think [name]Silas[/name] strikes a lot of the same notes as [name]Rufus[/name], and is a lot safer (in a good way). [name]Adrian[/name] [name]Silas[/name] is great, but I think I like [name]Silas[/name] [name]Adrian[/name] better…

Good luck!

Though I love the sound of [name]Rufus[/name], I know far too many canines of the same name to ever consider it for a little boy. Sorry.

lol, jesba, you realize it was me wanting to honor a [name]Ruth[/name], not the OP, right?

For what it’s worth, I’ve come up with a whole slew of other Ru- names to honor my grandmother–[name]Ruby[/name]/[name]Rue[/name], [name]Rupert[/name], [name]Reuben[/name], [name]Rutherford[/name], etc.

Thanks for clarifying [name]Ash[/name] and sorry to OP : D. Late night reading gets a little wobbly sometimes!

I have similiar thoughts to [name]Ash[/name], My first thought was it is a dog name, then to the similiarities with the date rape drug “roofies”.

I really love [name]Rufus[/name]! Recently added to my own list

[name]Rufus[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]
[name]Rufus[/name] [name]James[/name]
[name]Rufus[/name] [name]Matteo[/name]

Thanks so much, everyone!
Having dogs with the same name as a potential son doesn’t bother me. Like ashthedreamer said, there’s lots of dogs named [name]Molly[/name], [name]Sam[/name], [name]Sadie[/name], [name]Bella[/name], etc. and most people don’t seem to have a problem with giving their kids those names.
The roofie thing doesn’t bother me too much. After all, [name]Allegra[/name]'s on my long list and if I really loved it, I’d use it without a doubt.
@ lori johnson: Interesting that you thought of [name]Jasper[/name] and [name]Rufus[/name] as brothers, as that’s what triggered my interest in adding [name]Rufus[/name] to my short list - the idea of [name]Jasper[/name] and [name]Rufus[/name] as brothers. They have a similar feel, I think.
Now I just need to find the perfect MN for [name]Rufus[/name].

Our son is named [name]Rufus[/name] and we are amazed at how many positive comments we get on his name. He is now 14 months old.

As for the nickname - our little man gets called Ruff (it rhymes with our surname) or Ruffy. Occasionally people say Roofie, but when they hear us say Ruff they use that to. He also gets called Ru by his grandad and sometimes gets called Fuz by his dad.

I have never heard of a dog called [name]Rufus[/name], but we live in Australia, so maybe it’s not so common here.

As for the middle name, we didn’t bother as they never seem to get used. The only one that we did think of was [name]Maximus[/name] and that started as a joke at first and then we actually started to like it, but by then we had already registered his name. We thought [name]Rufus[/name] [name]Maximus[/name] was a great names for when he was in trouble.

Go for it. You will love the name, we do. The best thing is, we don’t know another person called [name]Rufus[/name].
