Ok berries, I know my favorite name choices might not be so popular here, but my husband has finally agreed to let me name our little girl [name]Malloy[/name]. It’s a family name, and a name I’ve been pinning away for for a very long time. The problem is that it comes with conditions…we have to use the middle names [name]Declyn[/name] [name]Marie[/name]. I love the name [name]Declyn[/name], just not with [name]Malloy[/name]. [name]Do[/name] I sacrifice the middle name to get the first name I love, or go with our back up choice of [name]Rowan[/name] [name]Marie[/name]? ([name]Marie[/name] is a family name on his side that he has always wanted to use for a girl, it’s also my middle name).
Need help so I can finally give this little girl a name!!
Well, I obviously love [name]Rowan[/name] but it seems like [name]Malloy[/name] is your special name. I would use the first name I loved and compromise on the middle(s) since middle names are not used that often. I love the name [name]Malloy[/name] for a girl, very spunky and interesting. I am not a fan of the middle name [name]Marie[/name] since it is somewhat of a “filler” middle name in the South. [name]Every[/name] girl I know has the middle name [name]Marie[/name] or [name]Nicole[/name]. But since it’s a family name to you, it works perfectly.
Honestly I like [name]Malloy[/name] for a girl with a more feminine middle like [name]Marie[/name], but when I hear “[name]Malloy[/name] [name]Declyn[/name]” I think boy. It’s only the [name]Marie[/name] part that makes it more gender-specific. Of course that might not bother you since your other combo [name]Rowan[/name] [name]Marie[/name] is also pretty unisex.
That said I think both are wonderful names but if [name]Malloy[/name] is the one you always wanted to use, use it! Rarely will you ever hear or use her middle names anyway.
I am not fan of either [name]Malloy[/name] or [name]Declyn[/name], so I would recommend [name]Rowan[/name] [name]Marie[/name]. Sorry.
If [name]Malloy[/name] means a lot to you then definitely sacrifice the middle name so you can use it. The first name is the most important anyways! Middle names aren’t really that important.
What is it about [name]Declyn[/name] that you love? Is it a family name as well? I think [name]Malloy[/name] is really cool. Makes me think of [name]Beckett[/name] ("[name]Molloy[/name]", “[name]Malone[/name]”) kind of depressing but beautiful books. The flow of [name]Molloy[/name] [name]Declyn[/name] [name]Marie[/name] feels wonky to me. Maybe putting something soft and vowel-ish in the middle there would help take the edge off.
[name]Molloy[/name] [name]Olwen[/name] [name]Marie[/name]
[name]Malloy[/name] [name]Cliona[/name] [name]Marie[/name]
[name]Malloy[/name] [name]Ellen[/name] [name]Marie[/name]
[name]Malloy[/name] [name]Fiona[/name] [name]Marie[/name]
[name]Malloy[/name] [name]Evelyn[/name] [name]Marie[/name]
[name]Malloy[/name] [name]Rosaleen[/name] [name]Marie[/name]
Then again, you can’t go wrong with [name]Rowan[/name].
Out of curiosity, where does [name]Declyn[/name] (that spelling) come from? I understand [name]Marie[/name] is a family name, but why does your husband want [name]Declyn[/name] so strongly?
Honestly I don’t think [name]Malloy[/name] [name]Declyn[/name] [name]Marie[/name] works particularly well. [name]Malloy[/name] [name]Marie[/name] works; it’s distinctive and interesting but also unambiguously female and flows well.
[name]Will[/name] your daughter’s surname be [name]Ferguson[/name]? If so, I like [name]Malloy[/name] [name]Ferguson[/name] much more than [name]Rowan[/name] [name]Ferguson[/name]. Definitely stand by the first name you love and compromise on the middle names. [name]Malloy[/name] [name]Declyn[/name] [name]Marie[/name] doesn’t sound good to me at all. [name]Malloy[/name] [name]Marie[/name] is fine, but I don’t understand why [name]Declyn[/name] is a must.
I agree, [name]Malloy[/name] [name]Marie[/name] is adorable. M&Ms! but [name]Malloy[/name] [name]Declyn[/name] [name]Marie[/name] isn’t the best. Save [name]Declyn[/name] for another child.
Thanks everyone! I agree that I could absolutely do without [name]Declyn[/name] (using this spelling vs [name]Declan[/name] to try and soften the name a bit) as part of the middle name. It’s my husbands fav name for a girl, so he wants it used if he agrees to [name]Malloy[/name], which he doesn’t care for. Ugh, why is this so hard!!
I would definitely lose the [name]Declyn[/name] part of the combo, and the combo of [name]Malloy[/name] [name]Marie[/name] [name]Ferguson[/name] is as good as it gets for flow.
And please tell your husband to keep [name]Declan[/name] for a boy, it makes a great impact as a boy’s name but as [name]Declyn[/name] I want to run away screaming especially as a name for a pretty little girl and the tryndy spelling puts the knocker on it for me.
I think it has to be one or the other, [name]Malloy[/name] v [name]Declan[/name]. Is this your first child, and are you planning on having others? If so, perhaps use either [name]Malloy[/name]/[name]Declan[/name] now and save the other for the second baby.
(And I would spell is [name]Declan[/name]-- if you want to use a boy’s name on a girl, go ahead and gender-bend. Otherwise you’re kind of subverting yourself, and sending a message that the little girl isn’t strong enough to carry the real thing. If you feel a need to ‘feminize’ a male name, you should use a feminine name because you aren’t comfortable with gender-bending).
Replacing a vowel with a “y” does not soften a name or make it more feminine. [name]Declan[/name] does have a hard, masculine sound, and [name]Declyn[/name] doesn’t do anything to remedy that. The name still sounds the same, except now it has a “tryndy” spelling. [name]Blade[/name] worded it better than I could.
I’m going to have to disagree with the idea of [name]Malloy[/name] [name]Marie[/name]. It doesn’t sound good to me, and it’s not because of the double M’s. It sounds very strange. [name]Malloy[/name] is an Irish surname, [name]Marie[/name] is very French. I like the idea of a second middle name to break it up, but I’m not a fan of [name]Declan[/name] on a boy or a girl. What about something with a softer sound, like [name]Dylan[/name] or [name]Devon[/name]? Or you could go really Irish and use [name]Siobhan[/name] (Shi-Vaan) [name]Malloy[/name] [name]Siobhan[/name] [name]Marie[/name] sounds cool!
I think [name]Rowan[/name] [name]Marie[/name] is sweet, and it’s one of the only slightly masculine names I don’t actually mind on a girl. However, [name]Malloy[/name] [name]Ferguson[/name] sounds lovely and [name]Malloy[/name] [name]Marie[/name] is nice enough.
Thanks everyone. I guess I really need to see if there is any other name that my husband would be willing to use besides [name]Declan[/name]/[name]Declyn[/name]. I really love [name]Malloy[/name] [name]Isla[/name] [name]Marie[/name] [name]Ferguson[/name]!
