This always put me off this name. Are there other names like this? That spell negative meanings?
Okay, first of all, [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] is not spelled [name_f]Saddie[/name_f] so it is not “sad die”. Secondly, it is not pronounced “sad die” or anything like it. It’s “say-dee” and it’s a lovely name.
I can’t say names throw me off because they have negative words in them (except for names like [name_f]Analiese[/name_f] which should be spelled with two N’s anyways). Obviously it doesn’t bother a lot of people because [name_u]Madison[/name_u] (mad) and [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] (ant) are very popular. Can’t say I’m a fan of those two names regardless of what words are in them.
A lot of people are put off by the name [name_f]Violet[/name_f] because it’s too close to violent, but I still think it’s a beautiful name. I love the name [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] and it doesn’t bother me that “die” is in the name because it’s not pronounced that way.
It’s pronounced “say-dee,” so I don’t get that at all.
100% agree.
Well, [name_f]Margot[/name_f] reminds me of escargot and [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] reminds me of mildew.
So yeah, even though a lot of times our personal name associations are a “stretch,” it can be enough to put us off a name. I hear ya!
It doesn’t really have anything to do with how it’s pronounced. I get it. Also, I totally agree with the pp about [name_f]Margot[/name_f]. There are a couple names that I look at and see words and I have to actually make a mental correction before speaking them aloud.
it might be pronounced [name_m]Say[/name_m] dee but it spells sad and die. The question was not so much about [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] but other names with negative connotations in their spelling. Made me laugh [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] and Mildrew!
I’m not a fan of any names that end in -lie because it spells lie, not lee as it’s pronounced.
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is pronounced the same but spelled [name_f]Saidy[/name_f]. I love my name. I don’t think anyone ever associates its with sad or die, because its not pronounced that way.
Someone once told me they would never name their child [name_u]Noah[/name_u]. I couldn’t work out why so had to ask - its because the first syllable is NO and what child wants to hear that all the time? That one had never occurred to me, neither had [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] or [name_f]Violet[/name_f] until they were mentioned on here. I think unless the connotation is really obvious, particularly if the name is reasonably popular, then its not going to bother most people.
I have the following negative assiciations:
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]- Violent
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] - Maggot
[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f] - Synthetic
[name_f]Demetria[/name_f] - Dementia
Which is a pity as they are lovely names. However, I think once you get to know someone with that name the other association fades away.
Except that should be pronounced [name_m]Said[/name_m] as in I said, then ee. Technically i mean.
I second this.
I love this name but there are so many bad associations! People always say “That’s a dogs name!” Or the whole “sad die” thing which really upsets me as I think it’s a lovely, spunky yet sweet name. Furthermore, British people must not mind as it was - not sure if it still is - in the Top 100 in 2012 or 2013.
I don’t really have any names like this to be honest, the only one that does come to mind in [name_f]Fanny[/name_f].
I find it hard to see ‘sad die’ myself (this is the first I’ve even heard that mentioned), possibly because it’s fairly common -as are loads of other -ie names nowadays- and the sounds are off. But then I can’t help but see ‘anal lies’ or ‘analyse’ for [name_f]Annaliese[/name_f].
@mollydolally: Actually, [name_f]Sadie[/name_f]'s never been in the top 100. Closest it got was #144 in 2003. Still, I think it’s nice and I’ve never come across the dog thing
I get you, OP - you’re not saying it’s rational or something other people would associate, it’s just this weird thing your brain does when you see it. I have a few too:
[name_f]Orla[/name_f]: beautiful. Would never fault a parent for using it. [name_m]Just[/name_m] my style. But I see “oral” every.damn.time.
[name_m]Fergus[/name_m]: nice name! Fits in with my favs. Reminds me of “fungus.”
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]: maggot. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it without the t.
Anything with ‘anal’: from the first time someone pointed out the “kids are cruel” angle, I can’t unsee it.
Would I expect others not to use these names? Never! I know it’s just me, but right or wrong, those are my associations.
Although I just woke up and can’t think of any now, when I hear [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] I have to mentally tell myself that it’s not slang for “sadist”.
Okay, coming back to this thread, you’ve officially ruined [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] for me… I can’t think of anything by sad-die now! I’m even pronouncing it like that in my head!
We were considering [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] for our fourth child, but my husband didn’t like how it had die in it. And to spell it sady, lookers like sadly. I guess what it comes down to is if it bothers you and how much. When I here someone call a child [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], I don’t think of the word die in her name, just that it’s a beautiful name.
Exactly this.
[name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] always manages to remind me of the Tasmanian Devil, and I agree with the ‘lie’ bit, it doesn’t spell ‘lee’ for me at all, and I agree with an OP who mentioned [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] and Mildew.
