Saffron beautiful and unique or hippyish?

I’m recently crushing on [name]Saffron[/name] for my baby girl so much that i’ve even started calling my bump Saffy when i feel those adorable little kicks! And writing out her full name etc…

From friends my age i’ve got great feedback that its a beautiful name but my mum is really putting a downer she says its weird and hippyish and Saffy sounds like Staffy which is short for some full dog name.

Is it that weird? for some reason to me its different but familiar, easy to pronounce and Saffy is just so pretty a cute kind of like [name]Sophie[/name] but if it’s too childish [name]Saffron[/name] is strong and beautiful to fall back on… i’m loving the name! its the first time i’ve felt that a name is so right but i am sensitive to other peoples opinions…will i get strange looks? or bad comments? what do you Berries think from an objective point of view! i’m scared i dont want to hear honest feedback because i love the name so much but i think its what i need so if you dont like it please be honest and say so but be aware i am a hormonal pregnant woman so dont be too brutal iykwim!

oh another point to add is i’m half iranian half scottish, and saffron is quite a spice used there which to me is really nice as i speak a bit of farsi though i am completely ‘westernized’ lol but i do like to maintain a bit of the culture. i’m wondering if my relatives will find it really strange

Also the crocus flower of which saffron is obtained from is quite symbolic to me!

[name]Saffron[/name] is lovely! I really like it and would love to meet a little girl with that name. I would definitely think her mother had good taste and an open mind. I’m sure some people will think it is odd, but some people would think it odd to give your child an uber popular name as well so you really can’t win. People love to judge no matter what, don’t let them get you down! It sounds like [name]Saffron[/name] is THE name for you, and you shouldn’t let anyone’s opinion change your mind. [name]Just[/name] remember opinions are like a***holes, everybody has one.

i think [name]Saffron[/name] is lovely, to me its unusual enough but not weird, plus it has the benefit of being familiar in both spelling and pronunciation to most. I think its exotic sounding, not hippyish and i love the connection you have to the spice and the flower. I like Saffty too and it would never have occurred to me to relate it to staffy (short for stafforshire bull terrier). An alternative nickname could be [name]Ronnie[/name] or even Saffy shortened to Fi/[name]Fifi[/name]

I adore [name]Saffron[/name] and from your description, it sounds like it’s the “one” for you!

Yes, it is a hippy name, but that isn’t a bad thing per se. The spice as a given name is unusual enough it doesn’t have any negative associations as a name that I am aware of.

If you love the name, go for it. I think it’d make for an cool name.

I never knew it was considered a hippy name. I don’t think of it like that. It is a very pretty name. Saffy is a cute nn.

So many things about it are significant to you that I think you should definitely use it. When your mom sees her granddaughter, she will come around on the name.

I agree it doesn’t have any negative associations, but I instantly thought of saffron rice. However, names like [name]Sage[/name], [name]Juniper[/name], and [name]Clove[/name] are popping up more often. I don’t see why [name]Saffron[/name] should be any different. Also, I work with dogs everyday and my mind didn’t jump from Saffy to Staffie. It’s obvious you really love the name. If it feels right, go for it:-)

I’ll be straight with you…

I love weird/hippie names but that’s my personality so people expect that out of me. If people say a name I love is weird/silly/ugly/not a real name it doesn’t faze me; it may actually make me like it even more. The fact that you are questioning whether [name]Saffron[/name] is odd or not lets me know that weird/hippy isn’t you. So if you use [name]Saffron[/name] you’ll have to face reality: Yes it is weird and yes you will get negative feedback. You’ll need to get a thick skin because if you aren’t confident about this name then your child won’t be confident about it either

I think its lovely. Simple and sweet.

I adore [name]Saffron[/name]! I think it’s recognizable but not to popular, and it’s gorgeous!

I used to love [name]Saffron[/name], and I still think it’s a pretty name. I’ve only ever heard of 2 [name]Saffron[/name]'s but I don’t think it’s that uncommon in the UK.

I think [name]Saffron[/name] is a great choice. I’ve been suggestion Coriander as a great food/nature/spice name so [name]Saffron[/name] is a great option.
Also [name]Sage[/name] is popular and also falls into the same category so I say GO FOR IT!

(Also there seems to be a trend that mothers have to tell their daughters they don’t really like the names that weren’t on their baby list as well. [name]Don[/name]'t worry about it too much and choose what you love and enjoy your pregnancy.)

Sounds like it’s the one for you. [name]Saffron[/name] is really beautiful AND accessible [name]IMO[/name], and exotic without sounding even remotely stripperish. And while she’ll likely be the only one on the playground, I have met a couple of women with the name over the years so it certainly isn’t unheard of. Also, I used to work with dogs and would never have connected the nn Saffy with Staffy (Staffordshire). You could always tell your mom that the alternative is Crocus - that should put an end to her mumblings
