Salome

What do you think of the name [name]Salome[/name]?

For me its such a beautiful name, with a great meaning and love the sah-loh-may pronunciation (though I must admit I’m not even sure if this is universally the correct pronunciation?!) do you think it would be one of those name that people will always struggle to pronounce and spell?

is it a name you are familiar with?

Also I’m big on nicknames with a different feel…what nn would you use for [name]Salome[/name]? [name]Mae[/name]?..could you get away with [name]Maisy[/name]/lola/lolita? any other good nn spring to mind?

It does have a beautiful sound and meaning, but the Biblical [name]Salome[/name] turns me off the name entirely. I would liken it to naming your son [name]Judas[/name].

I’m not religious either so the biblical reference doesn’t bother me…I’m more worried about ongoing pronunciation issues!

I really like it but I worry about the nn Salami. I personally love salami but don’t want my child called that. For a nn I like Lomi, Lo, and [name]Mae[/name]

There are 2 [name]Salome[/name]‘s in the Bible. The lesser known one was a disciple of [name]Christ[/name], the wife of [name]Zebedee[/name], and mother of [name]James[/name] & [name]John[/name]. It’s also believed that she and [name]Mary[/name] were sisters so she’d be [name]Jesus[/name]’ aunt

I like the French Salomé better

I pronounce it Sal-oh-may with the [name]Sal[/name] part like [name]Sally[/name], with accent on the last syllable me, (just saw above poster made with accent I couldn’t!) but not sure if that is the way you are or if it is a more “o” like the sound “sahl (like salt) o-may”. I used to adore this name but then it started to remind me of the word Salami! (and since i am a vegetarian that was even more of a turn off!) If that isn’t an evocative feeling for you, I would go for it as I think it has a lot of zing. I would NOT let pronunciation OR biblical associations stop you if you love it, as [name]IMO[/name] people find a way to mangle almost every name even if it’s [name]Jane[/name] or [name]Mary[/name]-and also have strong opinions/negative associations about even the most innocuous names to others.

I love [name]Salome[/name]. I would possibly use [name]Sally[/name] as a nickname. Maybe [name]Lola[/name]. [name]Maisy[/name] would work as well, but I don’t personally like it. I was just talking about [name]Salome[/name] in another thread, alongside [name]Ophelia[/name] and [name]Pandora[/name].
[name]Salome[/name] is a beautiful name, if my family would be okay with it, I would keep her among my favourites

I also have to mention that the most famous Biblical [name]Salome[/name] is actually not named in the Bible, she’s ‘Herodias’ Daughter’. And the only reason she asked for what she asked for was because her mother asked her to because she was bitter. (Herodias would be worse for me than [name]Salome[/name].)
The only named [name]Salome[/name] in the Bible was one of [name]Jesus[/name]’ followers.

Also, when I was little there was an animated TV series called [name]Noah[/name]'s Island or something, and there was a very sassy mammoth there called [name]Salomi[/name] ([name]Salome[/name] in the Norwegian dub). Sassy mammoths have a way of winning me over

I [name]ADORE[/name] [name]Salome[/name], pronounced Sah-lo-may. It’s so elegant. And if [name]Delilah[/name] is climbing the charts, why not [name]Salome[/name]?

If you live in a heavily [name]Christian[/name] area it may be a problem, but otherwise I don’t think it’s a big deal. People are using [name]Delilah[/name] now, so I’m sure names like [name]Salome[/name] won’t be too eye-popping. A lot of sources list sa-LO-mee as the correct pronunciation, but I’ve only ever heard anyone say [name]SAL[/name]-oh-may, so I’m not really sure what’s “right.” I’d love to see it used, though- it’s a guilty pleasure for me!

I love [name]Salome[/name] as well but I only know the French prn, BtN says the English prn is “sə-LO-mee” which I don’t really care for. However if you love it then use it.

Here are a bunch of prn from different countries: Pronunciations for salome (from Lou Andreas-Salomé to Fräulein salome)

We named our daughter [name]Salome[/name] (pronounced Sah-low-may) and have never encountered any problems with it (in fact, I think everyday how much I love the name – it has such a beautiful melody).

We call her [name]Salo[/name] for short – which I also love, as it’s not too girly.

[name]Just[/name] to clarify a few misconceptions: the only [name]Salome[/name] mentioned in the New Testament is one of [name]Jesus[/name]’ disciples; in fact she’s one of the first people to witness the resurrection.

The woman who asked for the head of [name]John[/name] the Baptist is not named at all in the New Testament. She is given the name [name]Salome[/name] in the [name]Oscar[/name] Wilde play of the same name.

We actually live in a [name]Christian[/name] country where [name]Salome[/name] is not an uncommon name at all, so I don’t really see the deterrent for people at all.

It’s a gorgeous name!
