Same First Name and Last Name

i know a will wilson and nobody cares but personally i’d never do it?

I can see why it seems cute and fun, but I can see a lot of negative things coming from choosing a name like this (teasing, not being taken seriously, etc.), and I can’t really see a benefit. For instance, I think it would actually be more confusing for paperwork because people would think there was an error. You and him would probably get a lot of phone calls saying they think there was an error filling out the paperwork. And some kids around him might think it’s a cool name, but I imagine others would use it to mock him (e.g. only calling him Carter-Carter or Quinn-Quinn). IIf I had a repeated name, I’d be embarrassed to tell people my name, even as an adult. I would be afraid of not being taken seriously for job applications and such as well. I think most people would get used to it once they knew him, but I wouldn’t want him to have to deal with that initial hurdle every time.

We have a name that we really love that just so happens to be really cool with our last name because it would become the backwards name of a well-loved, long-standing character. However, because we know that some personality types would be embarrassed with a name like that, we don’t want to risk giving a child that name in case they would be embarrassed by that. In other words, your future son might think a repeated name is cool and wish you chose it, but I think that would be better than naming him that and him being embarrassed by the name.

I think it’s fun that you’ve been calling him that throughout your pregnancy, much like people refer to their baby as [name_u]Baby[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] when pregnant. I don’t think it would be bad if you gave him a different first name and still used his last name as a nickname for him

This was my thought as well. It seems the one theoretical bonus would be a true drawback in practice.

I agree with most of the other posters here in saying that I wouldn’t do it. I mean, I know I personally wouldn’t even have considered it because there are just too many delicious names out there to be even a bit tempted by this, but putting myself in your shoes I’d keep looking for something that feels both pragmatic AND thoughtful.

Oh and if it’s the name I’m thinking of it goes very well with [name_m]Simon[/name_m] as a middle. So I think you’re on the right track to keep [name_m]Simon[/name_m] as a middle and find another first.

I actually don’t think it’s that weird of an idea at all! Not something I typically hear of, but it could be very cool.

That said, I could also see, depending on your son’s personality, that it also could feel a bit embarrassing, at some ages, at least if he’s more on the socially anxious side. It’s something that could draw a lot of attention to him is all, and if he’s someone who loves the spotlight, he could love it, but if not, it may take a while for him to like it.

How would you feel about another name that starts with the same letter, that maybe has even some of the same sounds, but isn’t exactly the same name? That could potentially give you some of the coolness you’re looking for but with less of the potential risk, If I’m right about the name I think you’re thinking of, here are some ideas:

  • [name_m]Adlai[/name_m] [name_m]Simon[/name_m] A.
  • [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] [name_m]Simon[/name_m] A.
  • [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] [name_m]Simon[/name_m] A.
  • [name_u]Averil[/name_u] [name_m]Simon[/name_m] A.
  • [name_m]Avett[/name_m] [name_m]Simon[/name_m] A.
  • [name_u]Avi[/name_u] [name_m]Simon[/name_m] A.

Seconding almost everyone to say–please don’t do this. (At least you really like your last name, though!)

I’m undoubtedly in the minority by saying that I love this idea. But, I concede, this is probably just because I find the idea of a [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] running around hilarious.

As some above have suggested, having the forename phonetically mimic the surname is a way of retaining the playfulness of a reduplicated name without the same embarassment/comic factor.

[name_m]Jim[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u], for example, or [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] Sidmouth.

This, too, is memorable; important as that seems to be a major factor in the making of this decision.

If you don’t mind, I’ve allowed myself to guess what the name might be, and I’ve thought of things that might work with these names:
