Samuel Colton? Too much gun influence?

My fiance is a big gun enthusiast and likes the name [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colt[/name] which is the name of the man that invented the [name]Colt[/name] guns.
I think that’s too much so he suggested [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colton[/name]. I still think the gun connection is pretty evident but figured I’d get other opinions. No kids yet, just talking about names but I don’t want my son to go through life with people going, “oh, your parents are big gun people.”
And would [name]Colton[/name] [name]Samuel[/name] be as recognizable as connected to guns?
Thanks!

I admittedly don’t know anything about guns and my family never had them around. I never would connect the name [name]Samuel[/name] with guns. [name]Colt[/name] does make me think of guns, so I’d go with [name]Colton[/name]. I think either [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colton[/name] or [name]Colton[/name] [name]Samuel[/name] would be fine. My sister had a baby boy two months ago and named him [name]Colton[/name] and I’ve never once thought of guns when I hear his name.

[name]Samuel[/name] is a classic Biblical name and [name]Colton[/name] is a trendy surname. Since mn’s are rarely known outside of a small circle of close family and friends, I don’t think the general public would make the connection regarding guns. But definitely choose [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colton[/name]. [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colt[/name] would just be too much.

I thought guns right away
I would not use it

I too don’t know anything about guns but agree with the poster who said that middles are unlikely to be known outside family. I’d use [name]Colton[/name] though rather than [name]Colt[/name], as I have heard of the [name]Colt[/name] gun, but [name]Colton[/name] I don’t associate at all. [name]Samuel[/name]'s a great name, and I think it pairs better with [name]Colton[/name] than [name]Colt[/name] as well.

Sounds like the kind of name I’d use chuckles. Of course, I am a gun enthusiast so, it me the connection is very obvious and I probably would think the parents were into gun collecting. I don’t think people who aren’t into firearms would make the connection so readily though because your average person doesn’t know who created what brands of firearms or necessarily even the names of various guns. It really depends on what area of the country you live in.

I think the name is just fine, it’s not as if you are naming your kid [name]Beretta[/name], [name]Kimber[/name], or Winchester.

I am not a gun person and would not have made the connection with [name]Samuel[/name]. However, I am a football person and [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colton[/name] sounds like a football name to me (in the sense that it would be a good name for a fictional QB). I actually really like it and think that [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colton[/name] flows nicely.

[name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colton[/name] seems perfectly usable in my opinion. [name]Samuel[/name] by itself has nothing to do with guns, and most people wouldn’t even be aware of his middle name so the reference would be a lot less apparent. You’re right though, [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colt[/name] is definitely too much.

For the sake of nn’s, let’s assume that [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colton[/name] will most likely become known as [name]Sam[/name], whereas [name]Colton[/name] [name]Samuel[/name] would probably be shortened to [name]Colt[/name]. It just depends on which name you prefer and where you want the “gun” emphasis to be… Up front or hidden in the middle. =]

I wouldn’t have made the connection (I know absolutely nothing about guns) but since it’s so similar I don’t think it’s workable anymore.

It’s a good name, but when I read the headline I immediately thought it was a tribute name. Anyone who knows guns will recognize it. I think that’s fine, but if it bothers you then you need to reconsider. Honestly though, how often will people hear his full name? Birth announcements perhaps, but most people don’t introduce themselves by their entire name.

I’m not a gun person, but I have relatives who are, and I made the connection. Definitely too much, almost to the point of being downright scary. [name]Colton[/name] [name]Samuel[/name] would be worse, in my opinion, in that [name]Colton[/name] would likely be shortened to [name]Colt[/name]. I can’t say I’d want any son of mine having to hear his name followed by “45”. ([name]Colt[/name] 45, a type of gun)

I saw the connection (not really into guns, just know enough, I guess), but didn’t mind it in [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colton[/name]. I agree that middle names rarely come up in real life, so [name]Sam[/name] would probably get by without most people even wondering about the gun thing. I also agree that [name]Colton[/name] [name]Samuel[/name] doesn’t flow as well and puts the gun thing (nn [name]Colt[/name]) right up front. So I’d green light [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colton[/name] if you are ok with the gun enthusiasts recognizing it (I mean, your husband is one, after all) and leave [name]Colton[/name] [name]Samuel[/name] and [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colt[/name] off the list.

Thanks. He’s always jokingly suggestion [name]Remington[/name] and Winchester. He suggested [name]Charles[/name] [name]Daly[/name] (?) a few days ago, which I believe is the brand of hishis first shotgun. That was an immediate no. As to what area we live in my fiance is enlisted so we could wind up anywhere but after he gets out he wants to live in [name]North[/name] [name]Carolina[/name] so I think there’d be quite a few gun people.
I’m not a huge fan of the nickname [name]Sam[/name] so I’m even leery of using [name]Samuel[/name].
Thanks again for the input.

FWIW, if you named him [name]Colton[/name] [name]Samuel[/name] and it got shortened to [name]Colt[/name] a lot, I still wouldn’t think of guns. I’d just think of baby horses. And then it would just be a name. I think it’s fine if you have [name]Colton[/name] first!

My husband is big on guns as well & I never would have had a gun connection with [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Colton[/name] if not for your mentioning it. I think you’d be fine with it. [name]How[/name] many people know the first name of the man behind the [name]Colt[/name] gun? Only gun enthusiasts. [name]Samuel[/name] is a very strong biblical name & I think people would see that association first. I highly disagree that anyone who knows guns would recognize it. Plus, anyone that knows guns would be all for the association!
