[name_m]Hi[/name_m]!
I’ve just got back from Australia where I was staying with a family with two sons called [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] and [name_u]Jaime[/name_u] (who I’ve already posted about). I was really surprised when I met [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] as I have always assumed [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] to be a female name. ([name_u]Sandy[/name_u] from Grease and my dads friends ex) What do you think of it as a boys name? I just can’t get my head around it. I don’t think it helps that he is ginger.
Anyway, what do you think?
Thanks,
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] xx
Perhaps it was short for [name_m]Sandford[/name_m], [name_m]Stanford[/name_m] or something similar?
I know a man who is probably in his 50s who is called [name_u]Sandy[/name_u]. In his case, it’s a nickname for [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. I like it.
I’m not sure about elsewhere, but according to BtN [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] by itself was steadily used as a boy’s name in the U.S. before it became popular for girls:
I think [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] was the name of the little boy on Flipper, the TV show that they used to rerun at night when I was younger. It was also the dad on the OC which I loved! So I always though of it as unisex cause of these TV associations from high school! I also know a little boy named [name_m]Sandro[/name_m] and I am sure he could be [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] if he wanted.
There was a little boy that came to an event my church sponsors whose name was [name_u]Sandy[/name_u]! He was adorable, and I thought it was cool (also, there’s a [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] on the American TV show, [name_m]How[/name_m] I Met Your Mother). I think it’s generally a nn for [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. I like it. I probably wouldn’t use it (I’d probably opt for [name_m]Alexei[/name_m], Skandar, [name_u]Sander[/name_u], [name_m]Xander[/name_m], [name_m]Zane[/name_m], [name_u]Lex[/name_u], [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], or [name_m]Alec[/name_m] instead), but I’d be happy to meet a little boy named [name_u]Sandy[/name_u]. I think it’s sweet.
In [name_f]Scotland[/name_f], [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] is a nickname for [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. I think it’s fine.
[name_u]Sandy[/name_u] Koufax was a big deal in American baseball (real name [name_m]Sanford[/name_m]) and [name_m]Little[/name_m] Orphan [name_f]Annie[/name_f]'s male dog was [name_u]Sandy[/name_u], so the name has always felt masculine to me
I can’t get my head around it as a girls name either
This and the movie Identity Thief, where the main character, played by [name_m]Jason[/name_m] Bateman, is named [name_u]Sandy[/name_u]. He was named for [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] Koufax.
I sort of like it as a nickname for [name_m]Alexander[/name_m].
The character from ‘Flipper’ was my first thought when I saw this title. I adored that show when I was younger, so that was actually my introduction to the name until Grease made it unisex in my mind. I used to have dreams of boy-girl twins named [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] and [name_u]Shelly[/name_u] (forgive me, I was a 6 year old [name_f]Florida[/name_f] girl, haha!) I also thought of the dad from The OC, who was a really great character, though I believe his full name was [name_m]Sanford[/name_m]? It would be an adorable nn if you ask me, but that may be due to the fact that I automatically picture [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]Wood[/name_m] in the '96 movie version of ‘Flipper’ and the kindergartener in me swoons, haha. =]
I always considered it unisex, but I don’t really like it.
sandy has always been a boys name for me.
I only heard sandy for a girl a couple of times.
