Sansa

What do you make of [name_f]Sansa[/name_f]?

I was thinking of using it as a last name. Combining both my last names, [name_m]Santos[/name_m]-A________ and turning it into a new last name.

But I’m afraid it’s a little too tide to Game of Thrones.

Is it?

I’m assuming most people would assume I’m a fan of GOT.

I automatically thought of GOT. If someone weren’t a fan, they may not jump to that, especially if it’s a last name and not a first name. And while it’s tied to Game of Thrones now the show/books will not last for as long as your name : )

I automatically think of GOT as well. And I’m not even a fan, so if you purposely changed your last name [name_f]Sansa[/name_f] I would definitely assume you were.

If I met you and didn’t know you had changed your name, I would not assume your name was actually connected to Game of Thrones, but I would think of the woman on the show. If I knew you before you had changed it, I wouldn’t necessarily assume it was for Game of Thrones, since your hyphenated last name could obviously be shortened to [name_f]Sansa[/name_f], but again, I would think of the character.

Basically, I’d think of the show/books either way, but I wouldn’t assume the name was a nod to the series, especially because [name_f]Sansa[/name_f] is not an invented name like [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] - it’s Sanskrit (Bonus: so is [name_u]Arya[/name_u]!) Also, I don’t think people would assume you changed your surname to honor the show - I would expect one of the actual house names like [name_m]Stark[/name_m] or Targaryen in that case.

I love the name [name_f]Sansa[/name_f]. [name_u]Love[/name_u], love, love. Unfortunately, it is tied to GOT, like it or not. And the series isn’t over, so if the character of [name_f]Sansa[/name_f] does something atrociously evil or becomes some sort of horrible laughingstock, your daughter may have to live that down.

I’ve always cautioned nameberry users here: Wait to use a GOT characters name until the series is completely over.

As a surname, I don’t think it’s too tied to the show. I’m not a big GOT fan, but I’d be more struck by the connection if you were using it as a first name. As a surname, I think the connection is weakened, though I’m sure lots of people would still think of it in passing.
