How do you pronounce this name? I’m seeing Sur-sha and Sier-sha.
Assuming you have some Irish connection/heritage but don’t live in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], is this name usable/pronounceable in [name_f]English[/name_f]?
Update: Thanks for the feedback everyone! Sounds like there are three main pronunciations that are regional in Ireland: Seer-sha, Sur-sha, and Sair-sha.
I say seer-shuh. I guess it’s more familiar in [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking areas thanks to [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] [name_m]Ronan[/name_m], but if someone never heard the name before it would be very hard to pronounce.
I believe there are a couple of pronunciations in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] so I think either are correct. [name_m]Can[/name_m]’t speak to the usability- but as someone in a similar position heritage wise, I’d probably reserve that question for people who are Irish nationals.
I say ‘seer-shuh’, but I am not Irish, so I can’t really say what is most correct here.
It would definitely be mispronounced a lot by [name_f]English[/name_f]-speakers, particularly Americans, but I don’t think it would be difficult to correct them, assuming they’d catch on quickly. Definitely usable!
I say seer-shuh, I’m US based. I think [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] has brought this name to the public eye so it could be wearable. But it’s hard for me to tell, as a name nerd I pay more attention to people’s names than others so have a biased view as to what’s ‘normal’
My neighbors recently named their baby [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f]!I believe they are saying it seer-sha, though as I understand it sur-sha is also a valid pronunciation based on dialect.
I only have a bit of Irish heritage, so don’t really have a say in how it’s used in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] but seeing as the majority of [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] nowadays speaks [name_f]English[/name_f], I’d say it is usable in [name_f]English[/name_f].
I pronounce it both ways depending on how I’m feeling/what names it’s paired with. It’s a really pretty name, though like pp’s said you will have to correct a few people here and there.
I talked to my husband to compare notes, we know three seer-shas from [name_u]Dublin[/name_u], a sair-shuh from Kilkenny and a sur-sha from the west coast. So pronouncing it in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] is almost entirely an accent thing.
Growing up with a very Irish name in [name_u]America[/name_u], people on nameberry make it out to be a lot worse/harder than it is. It will get questions, but it’s something that you can put pride in.
I got on one of those name pronunciation youtube videos to find out how to pronounce it. The comments were full of people saying ‘I’m from this part of [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], and we say it like this-’
The three major pronunciations were Sur-sha, Seer-sha, and Sair-sha. It’s beautiful any way you say it, in my opinion. I think it would have some problems at first, but it’s getting more popular and well-known, so I don’t think it would be that bad.
