Sarka

We heard the name [name_f]Sarka[/name_f] on the Olympics tonight and SO fell completely in love. He’s brought it up a few times since we heard it about an hour ago, and even keeps reminding me that I have Czech heritage. This is pretty unusual for him… he has great taste in names, way better than mine, but I usually need to start the conversation. The announcer was pronouncing it Shark-a, which I think is a big part of why he likes it.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that it would be ridiculous to spell it Sharka? I’m usually against this kind of thing, but I really doubt that many people would be able to provide it if we spelled it [name_f]Sarka[/name_f]. We’re pretty sure that Šárka is completely out of the question.

[name_f]Sarka[/name_f]'s great, but I’d recommend sticking with that spelling. Please don’t spell it Sharka for pronunciation reasons. I think [name_f]Sarka[/name_f] sounds lovely with [name_m]Ivan[/name_m]'s name, but “Shark” as a first syllable just isn’t something I can see happening, especially for a girl.

[name_f]Sarka[/name_f] aside, I must complement you on the names in your signature. [name_m]Linus[/name_m] [name_m]Fox[/name_m], [name_u]Rex[/name_u] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_u]Wren[/name_u] [name_u]Winter[/name_u], [name_f]India[/name_f] [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], and the individuals [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], and [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] are excellent.

I dislike changing the spelling of a name for pronunciation purposes, even though it can be very tempting, unless it has been established as an alternative spelling. Though this is obviously personal preference, I would rather stay true to the name’s roots if I’m going to use it and correct people. If I’m not willing to do that, I figure I should consider other names.

I think you’ll get a lot of people focusing on the “Shark” aspect of the name, as it’s pretty standout and maybe not the best thing for a little girl to be associated with.

I love [name_f]Sarka[/name_f], whether you pronounce it sar-kuh or shar-kuh. I think people will initially say sar-kuh, but a quick correction (or introduction) will fix that. I think it’s not too far off from the idea of [name_m]Sean[/name_m], which most people are familiar with, and should be easy to deal with. It doesn’t hurt that [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] and [name_f]Sarka[/name_f] sound wonderful together!

[name_f]Sarka[/name_f] will ALWAYS get mispronounced, I can guarantee you that. And Sharka looks too much like Shark. [name_m]How[/name_m] about Sharca?

To me it looks like ‘sarcasm’ and worse, ‘sarky’ .

But I have loads of names that mean so much to me, but nobody else ‘gets’. Your opinion of it is the only one that matters (and maybe your SO haha). I like the sound of it a lot.

I agree with all of this. [name_f]Sarka[/name_f] is lovely in theory but I’m not sure it really works well in English.

So spunky!!

[name_f]Sarka[/name_f] is beautiful, but I agree it will probably have pronunciation problems.

I love the name but I agree you will have pronunciation issues. They will be corrected quickly however and I actually like the Sh-ar-kah pronunciation. Sar-kah isn’t bad though, I still like it. I also think you should just leave the spelling…Sharka isn’t very visually appealing personally and people would catch on quickly. It is a lovely name
