I am in a desperate situation with my best friend that I think you guys might understand. She is pregnant with her second son. Her first is named [name]Aidan[/name]. So far the only name she likes is… [name]Jaylen[/name]. cringes
She is not completely set on it, thank goodness. But I think I’ve suggested every single name on planet earth and she doesn’t like any of them! I need help. She doesn’t like traditional at all ([name]William[/name], [name]Thomas[/name], [name]James[/name], etc.) And obviously likes trendy or “urban” names. I know this isn’t exactly the style on nameberry, but I’m completely out of ideas and I don’t want a “nephew” named [name]Jaylen[/name]! Literally anything you guys suggest is better, just give me everything you’ve got!
[name]Lachlan[/name] came to mind straight up. I can also see surname names working well with [name]Aidan[/name] and fitting with her style. What about:
I’m with you, [name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Jaylen[/name] are soo very trendy together. Plus, [name]Jaylen[/name] seems very feminine to me (maybe because it ends in the “lyn” sound?) Bringing that fact to her attention might sway her away from [name]Jaylen[/name]. Other names with similar sounds to [name]Jaylen[/name]:
[name]Jason[/name]
[name]Jay[/name]
[name]Jacob[/name]/[name]Jake[/name] (popular yes, but much more classic than [name]Jaylen[/name])
[name]Jacoby[/name]
[name]James[/name]
[name]Jace[/name]
[name]Jasper[/name]
[name]Jack[/name]/[name]Jackson[/name]
[name]Jared[/name]
I don’t mean to be impolite, but this is your friend’s child, not yours, so if she likes the name [name]Jaylen[/name], then it’s her choice whether or not she names her son that.
However, I totally agree with you that those names make me cringe…Here’s hoping she picks something nicer, but if she does go with [name]Jaylen[/name], be a good friend and support her!
Well, she asked me to help her find names. She is just so picky, I’m having a hard time. I am writing down all the names you’ve suggested that I haven’t already. Thanks!
Sorry, blaire, I didn’t realize she had asked for your help! That changes things, and I really am sorry if I came across as rude.
Still, as a fellow expectant mama, I hope my friends support our final choice in baby name, even if it means telling a little white lie.
I was going to try to suggest other names, but the previous posters have done a really good job covering it!
Of the names suggested (and the fact that her first son is named [name]Aidan[/name]), I think that either [name]Logan[/name] or [name]Connor[/name] would fit nicely. Good luck!
Maybe you could suggest that she use another Irish name like [name]Aidan[/name] or another A name?

[name]Aidan[/name] and Keller
It might help to also point out to her that [name]Jaylen[/name] is likely to be a spelling headache. No one will instinctively know whether it’s spelled [name]Jalon[/name], [name]Jalen[/name], [name]Jalin[/name], [name]Jalan[/name], [name]Jalyn[/name], [name]Jaylon[/name], [name]Jaylin[/name], [name]Jaylan[/name], [name]Jaylyn[/name], [name]Jaelin[/name], [name]Jaelan[/name], [name]Jaelon[/name], [name]Jaelyn[/name], [name]Jaelen[/name]… etc. He will have to spell it for everyone, and still people will tend to misspell it.
[name]True[/name] story: In the ultra-cute '50s, a woman named her two daughters [name]Linda[/name] [name]Lou[/name] and [name]Sally[/name] [name]Sue[/name] – which is the equivalent of [name]Aiden[/name] and [name]Jaylen[/name] once you adjust for time difference. The later ([name]Sally[/name] [name]Sue[/name]) was so justly appalled that even as a very young child she decided to change her name. She chose [name]Susanne[/name] and told everyone it was the French spelling of [name]Suzanne[/name]. Tell your BFF this true story.
Now – a few ideas. Like everyone at this point, I’ll try not to repeat, but no promises!
[name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Pax[/name]
[name]Kenyon[/name]
[name]Bay[/name]
[name]Birch[/name]
[name]Madigan[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] is Irish – don’t know if she knows or cares, but there is a list of Irish boy names here, and many Irish surnames are popular besides [name]Madigan[/name]. [name]Kesey[/name], for example. And actually – now I think of it – I’d avoid repeating the “an” ending, so maybe not [name]Kenyon[/name] or [name]Madigan[/name]? Completely different sounds like [name]Justice[/name], [name]Oakley[/name], or [name]Traveler[/name].
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Callum[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Owen[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Griffin[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Ellis[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Asher[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Evan[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Graeme[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Gavin[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Cole[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Joel[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Elliot[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Chase[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Seth[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Liam[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Jonah[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Jasper[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Drake[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Spencer[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Colin[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Ryan[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Emory[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and Macsen
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Gage[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Julian[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Bennett[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Luke[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Max[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Wyatt[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Archer[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Noel[/name]
Here’s what I would do: as tactfully as possible say you’ve been thinking about [name]Jaylen[/name], and it really sounds like it could be a girl’s name with the -[name]Lyn[/name] ending.
I like the PP’s suggestion of [name]Logan[/name] and [name]Connor[/name]. Also [name]Carter[/name], [name]Jackson[/name], [name]Evan[/name], [name]Colton[/name], [name]Tristan[/name]…
But in the end, like others mentioned, unfortunately if your friend has bad taste it’s not your decision to make. Sometimes I wish i could name everyone I know’s babies to “save them from themselves.”
