Scandi/West African boy needs a first name!

Hello fellow nameberries!

I have been lurking this forum since we found out the baby we were was a boy back in [name_u]December[/name_u] and really enjoyed all name suggestions posted here! [name_u]Baby[/name_u] boy was born a couple of days ago and I thought picking his first namn would be easy since we had narrowed it down to two options. Turns out, it is not at all easy!

I would really like some new suggestions and ideas of what to name him!

Backround is: Im Scandinavian, living in Scandinavia with my boyfriend who is born and raised in [name_u]West[/name_u] [name_f]Africa[/name_f]. We plan on living in Scandinavia in the foreseeable future and we want a name that works in Scandinavia, works in [name_u]West[/name_u] [name_f]Africa[/name_f] and in English speaking countries. I am not overly fond of traditional Scandinavian names and would like to stay away from overly popular names.

[name_u]Baby[/name_u] boy will have two honour names, one traditional from my boyfriend’s tribe and a male version of one of my names which honours my mother and her beloved grandmother. The traditional name sounds like Ati and the male version name satts with a L and ends in a -us sound.

We narrowed down our lists to two names before he was born:

[name_m]Leander[/name_m] - family name on my side. Works in both our countries but not common where we live. We just don’t feel like it is THE name. Boy friend told me this morning he feels like its not the right name and I agree. This was my top choice during pregnancy.

[name_m]Sylvester[/name_m] - we like it because it works in our countries, is not very common but well known. We think it sounds handsome. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not sure it is THE name.

Runner-ups:
[name_m]Amos[/name_m] - I don’t like the Scandinavian pronunciation and not sure we could get people to use the English one.

[name_m]Amias[/name_m] - i really like but doesnt work in [name_u]West[/name_u] [name_f]Africa[/name_f]

[name_m]Augustin[/name_m] - too close in sound to future possible girl’s name
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] - a bit too ”boring” in my opinion. Boy friend likes

Congratulations on your baby boy! I’m not sure what does or doesn’t work in [name_u]West[/name_u] [name_f]Africa[/name_f] but I hope there’s something here that stands out. From your list of you’ve ruled out your top pick
Not that into your back up name and just based on that you don’t [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] your other contenders… And that they either end in s like one of his middles or are too close to what you like for a daughter… I think you’re right that using these names to find a while new list is a good plan

I like your list, the names are very solid and I love that you’re keeping in mind all the places his name will need to work well for his life.

Should have been more clear, you are right :slight_smile: All biblical names and most english names works very well. It’s mostly about that certain names is hard for [name_u]West[/name_u] africans to pronunace (at least for our reference group of boy friend’s family and friends). For that reason names like [name_m]Amias[/name_m] and [name_m]Aramis[/name_m] (which I like) do not work very well.

Thank you for your suggestions! I love [name_m]Valentin[/name_m] but I do not like the nick name he will likely receive.

[name_u]Florian[/name_u], [name_m]Cosimo[/name_m] and [name_m]Evander[/name_m] has been on our lists but ruled out.

Can’t use [name_m]Philip[/name_m], [name_m]Leon[/name_m] or [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] for family reasons.

I like [name_m]Solomon[/name_m], [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] and [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] and will run them by boy friend.

I like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] but it’s been top 10 here for many years which rules it out for me :frowning:

I had [name_m]Lucien[/name_m] on my list and we talked about [name_m]Silas[/name_m] as an option just yesterday!

As a Scandinavian [name_m]Rolf[/name_m] to me is the name of a middle aged truck driver :joy: Nothing wrong with being middle age or to drive trucks but not what i want to think about seing my baby​:slightly_smiling_face:. [name_m]Leif[/name_m] is a good name but I work with one so wouldnt work and I dont think it will work in [name_u]West[/name_u] [name_f]Africa[/name_f]

[name_m]Esaias[/name_m] is actually my sister’s top choice for her future son! I agree it’s a great name!

Names ending in —son is not usable since the -son ending is the mist common for last names here and it’s not allowed to name your baby a typical last name as a first name

I really like [name_m]Wesley[/name_m]; I think it is cool and handsome but boyfriend thinks it’s a girl’s name(?)

After lots of thinking it became clear his name is [name_u]Evan[/name_u]! Easy to spell and say, works in both countries, not at all common where we live and also honours my grand father. It just suits him very well! Thanks for all of your suggestions!
