My husband and I will be TTC within the year but have talked extensively about names. We’ve settled on a couple but our favorite is [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. I think it’s just perfect and it fits us so well. I’m just a little worried about its ever-increasing popularity! I’m sure the first folks that named their kids [name_u]Madison[/name_u] or [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] didn’t think that name would shoot up and become almost groan-inducing.
What do you guys think? Should a name’s possible future popularity affect your choice?
Also, do you think [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] will be super popular in a couple of years?
I think it depends on what you classify as too popular and where you live. For example here in Australia [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is already #81 and I think it will continue to rise in popularity quickly here. I think it has a high chance if reaching the top 20 here within the next 5 years. Comparatively in the US [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is currently ranked in the 360’s. obviously not ranked at highly as in Australia but still on the rise in popularity.
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f]'s rise over the past 3 years has been meteoric, and I think it’s likely that it will continue to climb. However, I think it’s very unwise to knock a name you love because it may become “too popular” at some nebulous time in the future. You don’t know what will happen to [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], and you don’t know what will happen to any other name on your list. If [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is your #1, why knock it for a name that could experience a similar resurgence in just a few years? You’d end up using a name you like less that becomes equally popular. [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is a beautiful name with a lot of great qualities (easy spelling and pronunciation, appealing nickname options, interesting and appealing sound) and it seems silly to me to discount the name because other people also like it.
I think it will definitely get more popular, but I don’t personally feel that it will be the next [name_u]Madison[/name_u]. I love [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]!
Thanks, guys! You all said exactly what my husband says! I’m such a worrywart. I would just be pretty sad if she had to be [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] B. My name is [name_f]Katie[/name_f] so I went through that a lot and still am since one of my very good friends is also [name_f]Katie[/name_f]. Lifelong identity crisis!
Thanks for the advice! We’re in the US so I’m hoping some other name comes and swoops the sassy, sweet name spot away from Elo
I think almost any name is at risk of becoming too popular or even just having the misfortune of two kids with the same name in one class. If you love the name and it’s not wildly popular now then you should be safe enough to use it.
I think that the [name_f]Elle[/name_f]/[name_f]Ella[/name_f]/[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] pre-fix means it will end up in the same category as [name_f]Addie[/name_f] names, are those too popular in your opinion? Popularity is such a personal thing. To some, anything outside the top 30 is crazy, to others anything in the top 1000 is sooo pedestrian! I think [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is on-trend in a good way and if you love it you should use it! I believe it is the name of a children’s book character & [name_f]Denise[/name_f] [name_m]Richard[/name_m]'s youngest daughter. Does that make it over-exposed to you? I think it also depends on where you live. You might never meet another if you live in a place where popular names rule, if you’re in a city it might be somewhat more common.
Its very popular here but not as popular in the US, if the popularity is a worry choose an unusual nickname like [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], [name_f]Lula[/name_f] or [name_f]Lola[/name_f].
Thanks, everyone! I feel much better! We love the nickname [name_f]Lolo[/name_f] so that might get more use if it becomes wildly popular. Now that we’ve got that settled, I just have to wait until the timing is right! Argh!
I have a 14 month old [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], who we call [name_f]Lola[/name_f] almost exclusively. We’ve only met one other little [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], who is like 4 or 5 and goes by [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]. We live in the Northeast (US) if that helps. We do know a few Lolas, but they’re all dogs!!! Anyway, no, I don’t think it’s in danger of getting popular like [name_u]Madison[/name_u], et al. any time soon. But I’m also of the opinion that if you love a name, then use it, regardless of popularity!!!
I see it becoming more popular, but I can’t see it in the Top 10. It might reach the Top 100/Top 50 in the next decade or two, but honestly, if it’s out of the Top 25, I don’t think it’s intensely popular or dated.
For example, my name was #43 the year I was born - though I’ve met a dozen or so people of all ages with my name in the last 25 years, I only shared it with one girl in my grade my entire school career. My best friend was #22, and she has only met a few her age. We both have classic names with a lot of history that are spelled the traditional way, and I think [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] fits that bill. I don’t think you have anything to worry about.
