Hello!
I love the name Schuyler and this is by far my favourite spelling and I love how it’s the original spelling of it. I do like Skyler/Skylar though.
My questions are
Is it worth the weird spelling for my kid if its the name I love or will they resent me for it? and
Can I still use the nn Skye when spelling it Schuyler? What other nn would you suggest
I feel like [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m] means that many people will pronounce [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] correctly. It feels more elegant than Skyler/Skylar.
I love [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] and this is my favorite spelling! It looks less trendy and feels more literary with the [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m] reference. And while I used to think it looked more masculine, I think the [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] sisters definitely help with that!
The spelling is fine. Great, actually! I think people would know how to say it but not spell (although Skylar/Skyler is one that they’d have to spell anyways)
Haven’t watched [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m] so… Shoo-ler? Is it meant to be said like [name_u]Skyler[/name_u]?
It would probably be easiest to use [name_u]Skyler[/name_u], but it’s not a huge deal. Can’t say how the future kid would feel… I don’t think a nickname needs to be spelled like the full name. Would they be going by [name_u]Skye[/name_u] all the time?
i imagine it’d be fine. i know a guy named Schuyler - from my understanding, he chose it himself, and he likes it. i didn’t know how to pronounce it at first, though
i think you’d constantly have to explain how to pronounce Schuyler to people
yeah, i think Skye is a perfectly fine nn for Schuyler
also i agree that Schuyler seems a lot more masc than Skyler/Skylar. i’m tempted to say that this spelling isn’t unisex, but instead masculine
I would absolutely spell it [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] over [name_u]Skyler[/name_u]. Looks so much classier! And the nn [name_u]Skye[/name_u] still works fine in my opinion. I actually prefer just [name_u]Skye[/name_u] for a girl as a full name & [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] for a boy. But if you do go w/Schuyler for a girl, some people may have issues pronouncing [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] correctly at first, but will get it eventually. It’s worth it to have a more authentically spelled name.
I don’t see a problem with the [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] spelling or pronunciation! There is a Schulyler county in my state so that’s my first association. I think it fits in well with the surname as first name trend.
And [name_u]Sky[/name_u] is still a cute nickname!
[name_u]Skylar[/name_u] feels more intuitive pronunciation-wise than [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] does (even as a long-time name nerd, I still forget it sometimes). [name_u]Skye[/name_u] is a very sweet nn.
Definitely! [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] is my favorite too. Plus, it’s more familiar with the popularity of [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m]!
I would spell it Schuy myself, but I knew a family with a [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] nn Schuy, so it makes sense to me. Then again, I prefer [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] for a boy, so I think [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] and Schuy look more masculine than [name_u]Skyler[/name_u] or Skye… I think [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] nn [name_u]Skye[/name_u] definitely works tho!
This is also by far my preferred spelling for the name and I do think it’s usable and worth it! I think nickname [name_u]Skye[/name_u] works perfectly well though I’d personally spell it [name_u]Sky[/name_u] for ease, or Schuy to match the full name. But it’s a lovely nickname no matter how it’s spelled!
[name_u]Love[/name_u] the spelling of it, but even as a [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m] fan myself I don’t personally think it is worth it to spell it this way. I agree Skyler/Skylar is becoming too trendy, but I think people that are not [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m] fans will have a hard time pronouncing that. I think I would pronounce it as “Shoe-ler” if I didn’t know the show, and that mispronunciation may bother me. If you do use the name, I still absolutely think that Sky/Skye is an appropriate nickname.
I consider this the more traditional spelling so I don’t see it as weird at all. There is definitely the factor that they will probably have to spell there name for people sometimes. That can be annoying but isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker, and I don’t think it’s so uncommon enough (again a pretty traditional name) as to be a big issue.
If you love [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u], then you should use it! I love [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] too. The pronunciation can be difficult, but it’s an easy fix. And with the popularity of [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m], I feel like it would be more recognizable.
I do think you could use [name_u]Skye[/name_u] as a nn, since the sound is there. Though honestly, I do see it as more masculine.
