🧬 science, biology, immunology names

Hi!

If you didn’t already know, in my non-Nameberry life, I am in scientific research as an immunologist :woman_scientist:t2: It’s a long time love and will continue to be, I also see it as a big part of my future childrens lives (whether it be ‘my mom is an immunologist,’ hearing science talk at the dinner table, or even getting into it themselves). Given that this takes up about 99% of my brain, heart, and time - I think it would be adorable to find a name that related or directly honored this field. Since I know that “immunology names” are not super prevalent, I think expanding to biology or even just science-y names would give a similar effect.

Some ideas I’ve had to get started:

  • Rosalind (Rosalind Franklin is perhaps the ‘obvious’ tribute to a research heroine)
  • Polly (Polly Matzinger, immunologist)
  • Janeway (Charles Janeway, immunologist - Charles or Charlie also works lol Janeway might be a GP)
  • Linus (Linus Pauling, chemist who also gave roots to molecular biology & biochemistry)
  • Marie (Marie Curie, radioactivity! The name Marie itself might be a bit tame though)
  • Using or playing on science-y terms like “Petra” for “Petri dish,” constellation names.
  • Maybe initials like ‘NK’ or ‘CD’ for immunology/science terms.

I would love to hear any ideas you have! Also, I think this could be helpful for someone else who might be looking for science-y names so feel free to add some that might be a resource to others even if you don’t think it works for my ask (e.g. Florence for Florence Nightingale may not be as poignant for me given that I’m not in healthcare but is still a great biomedical honor).

Thank you!! :petri_dish::dna::microscope::alembic::telescope::lab_coat::test_tube::mouse2::biohazard:

I don’t think [name_m]Louis[/name_m] has been mentioned yet - for [name_m]Louis[/name_m] Pasteur.

these are so much more creative than I ever anticipated!!

@daisydarcy one of the prominent immunologists you listed is actually a mentor of mine so that was super fun and exciting to see! Based on the name alone I like [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], [name_m]Ira[/name_m], [name_f]Ellen[/name_f], [name_m]Franklin[/name_m], [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], [name_f]Sally[/name_f], [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], and [name_m]Percy[/name_m] - for these the science/immunology connection is an amazing bonus. And then [name_m]Niels[/name_m], [name_m]Jules[/name_m], [name_m]Lorne[/name_m], [name_m]Darwin[/name_m], [name_f]Eva[/name_f] (not sure if this is [name_f]Eva[/name_f] Klein but if it is, I’m a big fan of hers), Vitetta, [name_m]Rosen[/name_m], [name_m]Elion[/name_m], [name_f]Lovelace[/name_f], [name_m]Faraday[/name_m], [name_f]Bell[/name_f], and [name_f]Nightingale[/name_f] the science connection really draws me in. Your periodic table and science jargon ideas are inspired: [name_f]Electra[/name_f], [name_f]Beryl[/name_f], [name_m]Callum[/name_m], [name_f]Francine[/name_f], [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f], [name_f]Irie[/name_f], [name_m]Lawrence[/name_m], [name_m]Thor[/name_m] (Thora? ), [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_m]Holmes[/name_m], [name_m]Watt[/name_m], and [name_f]Xena[/name_f] - wow

@Greyblue [name_m]Amazing[/name_m] ideas as always. I really like the connection with [name_m]Valentine[/name_m]! Jumping ahead: [name_f]Antigone[/name_f] for antigen and [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] for immunology had me too stunned to speak :exploding_head:

@shanade213 This is operating at a different level - [name_m]Basil[/name_m] for basophil is one of the sweetest things I’ve ever heard and [name_f]Affinity[/name_f] “Finn” is my new fav GP

@Rosebeth [name_m]Louis[/name_m] Pasteur the one and only! I always scan past a lot of these (like [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_m]Louis[/name_m], Eva) but it would really work so well maybe I need to stop overlooking them

@VEL [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] “Gene” !! I think this would be so sweet and a bit silly (in a fun way). All of the direct namesakes are so great (I think my next step is to do a deep dive to see if I there are unsavory details I need to know about). But we need to talk about: [name_f]Constance[/name_f] A for ConA? [name_f]Mina[/name_f] for histamine? Beatrice/T [name_f]Celandine[/name_f] for B/T cells? IL initials for interleukins? Philip/Philippa for the -phils (there is also an immunologist [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] “Pippa” Marrack who I had previously had on my radar so I might be sold)? I am floored! 🫨:exploding_head::open_mouth: ← these emojis are based on my face rn. I’m a little worried that you all are enabling me too much and I’ll pop up like “yeah this is [name_f]Allegra[/name_f] [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] … for allergies and apoptosis, obviously, what is there not to understand?”

@Johannaa [name_f]Nimue[/name_f] for immune is one I never would have thought of on my own but it is so lovely! And [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m] & co (I had never heard of [name_f]Igraine[/name_f] before)!! I used to have this name on my list just for the fiery meaning and fun sound - but if I can connect it to Ig then I have to love it. Thank you so much
