Scotland

I’m really into people naming their babies after places. I know people named [name]London[/name], [name]Paris[/name], [name]Ireland[/name], [name]China[/name], [name]Asia[/name], [name]Holland[/name].

What do you guys think of [name]Scotland[/name] as a baby girls name? Also, I would like it if they could make a nickname out of it…

UPDATE: What are your opinions on Sicily? This derives from my family being a large Italian family from Sicily.

I don’t care for [name]Scotland[/name] as a first name- I imagine it’d be awkward of difficult traveling to [name]Scotland[/name] or any other part of the UK. It also doesn’t seem that feminine to me. The only nicknames I can think of are [name]Scott[/name], [name]Scotty[/name], and maybe [name]Lynn[/name] (though it’s a bit of a stretch.)
[name]Hope[/name] that helps.

I don’t like country or continent names on people with no ties to it.

If you have no ties to [name]Scotland[/name], then I don’t like it. It’s pretentious to me.

[name]Scotland[/name] is okay, but I wouldn’t go for it. And I have ties to [name]Scotland[/name].
Nickname ideas are: [name]Scott[/name], Lan, [name]Annie[/name], [name]Lala[/name].

I think [name]Scott[/name] on a girl would be fine, but [name]Scotland[/name] feels a little clunky.

a) it’s not feminine, b) [name]Kourtney[/name] Kardashian just gave her baby girl this as a middle name, so it’s screams celebrity name

with that said, I’m really into people using place names that hold some significance to them, but I generally think this is cooler in the middle name spot.

So for arguments sake if you got married in [name]Scotland[/name], and you named your child [name]Eliza[/name] [name]Scotland[/name], I think that’s pretty cool.

[name]Scotland[/name] would be from my friend who had recently passed away who was from [name]Scotland[/name]…

I think with the personal significance factored in, it makes more sense, but agree that a middle name spot would probably work better.

Sorry for your loss. In that case I think that’s really cool. But I would still use it in the middle spot… I have ties to [name]Scotland[/name] - and I think the actual name is really cool - I just couldn’t do it in the FN spot. And the whole KK thing puts me off a little as well.

I really don’t like country names on people, it sounds silly. And while I like the word [name]Scotland[/name], I would just not do it. Maybe you could be a little more “local”, where was she from? Maybe a city/town/village name, a river or a mountain, an island, something like that could be more suitable and more special.

I’m so sorry for your loss, by the way, and I understand that you want to honour her.

It sounds silly - even on [name]Kourtney[/name] Kardashian’s daughter who has such a beautiful first name.
In her matter I get it though with [name]Mason[/name]'s [name]Dash[/name] (Kardashian) and now [name]Scotland[/name] which I presume is after ([name]Lord[/name]) [name]Scot[/name]t Disick?

[name]Alba[/name] or [name]Caledonia[/name] would work much better as fns, especially for a girl (they’re old Gaelic and Latin names for [name]Scotland[/name], respectively). Why don’t you just look for a nice Scots Gaelic name like [name]Caitriona[/name], [name]Elspeth[/name], [name]Iona[/name]?

Very Kardassian.

[name]Even[/name] if you aren’t a fan, even if you have tons of reasons…it will come off that way.

I don’t care for it as a name. I would use your friend’s name in some way rather than [name]Scotland[/name].

I personally loooove place names for babies! Edging on obsessed. [name]London[/name] is near the top of our girl name list, but I’ve decided we can’t use it as an FN. I travel to [name]London[/name] pretty frequently and assume that my daughter will as well in a few years. I feel that it would be really awkward to travel to a city/country you were obviously named after. I can just see the people of that area shaking their heads at the silly Americans. However, I think [name]London[/name] is a wicked cool middle name, and I feel that [name]Scotland[/name] would be as well! Somehow American place names don’t bother me as first names at all… [name]Austin[/name], [name]Dallas[/name], [name]Georgia[/name], [name]Virginia[/name], savannah, [name]Juneau[/name], [name]McKinley[/name]… All awesome. I think using it as a middle name would be a great way to honor your friend. And honestly, who really cares what the kardashians do? Name your kid what you love!

I love place names, but I think [name]Scotland[/name] would work better as a middle.

I don’t like place names in general, and [name]Scotland[/name] is especially silly and clunky to me. These types of names have a very small town/aspirational feel to me- I always sort of assume the parents have never left their small town and want something exotic sounding. Names such as [name]Scotland[/name], [name]Ireland[/name], [name]London[/name], etc don’t travel well and are pretty much laughed at in the UK (or whatever country/city the child was named for).

I’d definitely assume you were a big Kardashian fan, btw. I think it would be much nicer to use an actual Scottish name instead of just using her country of origin to honour your friend.

I really don’t like it as name and even less so after the Kardashian use. I do however, love the suggestions of [name]Caledonia[/name], [name]Alba[/name] and would add: [name]Scotia[/name]. I am from a gaelic speaking part of [name]Nova[/name] [name]Scotia[/name] and think [name]Scotia[/name] is very wearable. It is the latin form of [name]Scotland[/name]. As a name after a friend, this would be wonderful way to honour someone.

I actually love this name!
Scotlyn is on my girl’s list. In my opinion it’s a pretty name, and it’s very close to the name [name]Scotland[/name], without having to actually use the name.

Though I do think ties to [name]Scotland[/name] would make more sense if you were to use [name]Scotland[/name] instead of another variation. I have ties to [name]Scotland[/name], [name]England[/name], and [name]Ireland[/name], so in my mind I think it would okay to use it for me.

But then again, if you love it, go for it!

I think it would be hard to wear as a first name, but love the idea of using it in the middle spot. And I have to say that the previously mentioned idea of using [name]Scotia[/name] is genius.

I agree with all of this. I find it particularly weird to use anything ending in ‘-land’ to name a person.
