Scottish/Irish/Gaelic/Celtic Names?!

I know there are some lists on Nameberry but just looking for any other suggestions people might know?!

Our first daughter is Mhairi (scottish gaelic) and we’re thinking [name]Eilidh[/name] (scottish/gaelic) for our next girl but also looking for other suggestions/ideas. Doesn’t have to be scottish b/c my background is half scottish half irish and would be happy with either. [name]Just[/name] wondering if anyone knows of any pretty names they could share!:stuck_out_tongue:

I’m more experienced with Irish names, than Scottish. Here are a few I’d suggest.

Aibhlinn or [name]Aibhilin[/name], “ave + leen” which has turned into [name]Evelyn[/name]
[name]Ailish[/name] , “ay + lish” from [name]Alice[/name]/[name]Alicia[/name]/[name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Aoife[/name], “ee + fa” similar to the currently popular [name]Eva[/name] and [name]Ava[/name]
[name]Ashling[/name]
[name]Beibhinn[/name], “be + veen”, now used as [name]Bevan[/name]/[name]Bevin[/name]
[name]Caoimhe[/name], “kee + va”
[name]Eibhlin[/name], “ave + linn” or “eve + linn”, now [name]Eileen[/name]/[name]Elaine[/name]
[name]Eithne[/name] or Eitna, “en + ya”, of course now [name]Enya[/name]
[name]Eimear[/name], “ee + mer”
[name]Niamh[/name], “neev”
[name]Orlaith[/name], [name]Orlagh[/name], “or + la”
[name]Saoirse[/name], “sear + sha”
[name]Siobhan[/name], “shiv + awn”

I have a friend from [name]Ireland[/name], and some names in her family are:

[name]Sorcha[/name]
Clíyoncé
[name]Aisling[/name]
Aibha

the pp have suggested lovely names, I especially love [name]Niamh[/name].

Thanks

Dáirine ([name]DAW[/name]-rin-yeh)
[name]Neala[/name] ([name]Neel[/name]-ah)
[name]Alba[/name]
Flòraidh (Floh-[name]Ree[/name] or Flaw-ree)
Inira (In-ee-rah)
[name]Marged[/name] (Maar-ged)
Meleri ([name]Mel[/name]-air-EE)
[name]Iona[/name] (EE-oh-na)

[name]Hope[/name] these help.

We pronounce Mhairi as [name]Mar[/name]-ee. Though I have read that proper pronunciation would be Vah-ree b/c of the Mh. Although the person I named her after was a Mhairi I met in [name]Scotland[/name] and pronounced it w/ the M sound. I didn’t hear of the V sound until after she was named…and thankfully no one where we live knows it should be V. haha And agree [name]Niamh[/name] is beautiful, jst love the way it looks.

[name]Flora[/name] is my FAV name and [name]Florrie[/name] would be nickname I use after my Great Aunt but unfortunately my husband loathes the name.

Thank you for all the beautiful names to think about. Some very different ones I have never heard before.

[name]How[/name] about [name]Fiona[/name], or even [name]Finola[/name], instead of [name]Flora[/name]?

I’m going to try [name]Fiona[/name] with him, I think it’s really pretty! I have a friend w/ a little one named Fionnula so [name]Fionola[/name] would feel too close.

[name]Glad[/name] you like [name]Fiona[/name]. I love it!

i second [name]Fiona[/name], its #1 on our list… also really REALLY like [name]Niamh[/name]/[name]Neve[/name] and [name]Maeve[/name]. Those made our list, too. GL!

I think I am falling in love w/ the name [name]Fiona[/name]! And of course my stupid husband immediately thought of some awful character in the movie Eurotrip (which I’ve nevr seen) and he doesn’t like the name. Pretty sure I am naming this baby w/o him!
