I think it depends a lot on how it pairs with the first name of course, but given that that’s not provided here I will do my best to give thoughts on the isolated names!
[name_f]Scout[/name_f] is my dog’s name, so it’s hard for me to look at it truly objectively. I do think that’s an association some people may have. However I think that it reminds me of being adventurous, curious, and inquisitive. [name_f]An[/name_f] outdoorsy name with a big of a boyish edge, in a cute way. Harder for me to imagine this middle name being paired with an ultra fem first name than [name_m]Kit[/name_m], but not impossible!
I think [name_m]Kit[/name_m] is adorable. It feels old-fashioned yet has the same snappy, fun and outdoorsy feeling however it feels ever-so-slightly more gentle than [name_f]Scout[/name_f] to me. Still not too feminine and I like the three-letter simplicity. For some reason that word reminds me of a baby kangaroo. Not in a bad way.
So for me [name_f]Scout[/name_f] has a summery southern feel with a pretty upbeat disposition. I can visualise a little [name_f]Scout[/name_f] running around a ranch on a sunny day, surrounded by fields, mucking out stables and riding horses. [name_f]Scout[/name_f] feels fun! I also like the literacy connection with [name_f]Harper[/name_f] Lee’s novels.
[name_m]Kit[/name_m] feels a little cooler and she’s has a more fashionable vibe in a bohemian fun way. I can picture [name_m]Kit[/name_m] being a spunky fun girl who loves art, anything creative and listening to vinyl records on her own personal record player.
Like someone else said, I think it depends on the first name! But in general in terms of vibes:
[name_m]Kit[/name_m] - Artsy and quirky, different in a cute and fun way! I would expect a [name_m]Kit[/name_m] to wear big fun earrings and have a distinct sense of fashion, and have either creative hobbies or just unique ones! It also feels a bit [name_f]British[/name_f] to me since all the Kits I know are from there haha, so I picture cute red rainboots & the lush green countryside!
[name_f]Scout[/name_f] - On the other hand, this one feels very American to me! I guess it has a girl scout vibe for obvious reasons haha. I think of yellows & oranges, blonde hair, sunny days in the city, someone who probably owns a lot of dogs. Very youthful – [name_f]Scout[/name_f] makes me picture a little girl more than any other age!
They have quite similar vibes for me – punchy, high-energy, offbeat, and a bit preppy. I’d say [name_m]Kit[/name_m] is old-money coastal [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_f]England[/name_f] summers, while [name_f]Scout[/name_f] is [name_m]Southern[/name_m] afternoon iced tea on the back porch.
[name_f]Scout[/name_f] is rugged, tough and outdoorsy, but sweet too - it has this hint of adventure, a summery sort of vibe, literary and curious
[name_m]Kit[/name_m] is snappy, charming, quietly confident - I’m thinking autumnal colours, forests, foxes - there’s that adventure and curiosity about it too - a stylishness with no frills
[name_f]Scout[/name_f] - I’m not the biggest fan. It’s ok as a middle and if you love it… it’s not a bad name, by any means. I just think of To Kill a Mockingbird which I never really connected with, even though the story is a worthy one. Of names connected to that novel, I prefer [name_f]Harper[/name_f] and [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] myself. And I like the similar sounding [name_f]Sloane[/name_f] and even [name_f]Sutton[/name_f] more. It just reminds me of Boy/Girl Scouts and doesn’t feel that namey.
[name_m]Kit[/name_m] - this however, I LOVE. I’m a massive [name_m]Kit[/name_m] fan. I love that it’s connected to [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] (a family name for me) and I love how it feels like adventurous, courageous girl at the turn of the century. (Maybe the American girl doll? I’ve never read the [name_m]Kit[/name_m] Kittredge novels though so I have no clue what she was like.). She’s sweet and courageous and intelligent. [name_m]Kit[/name_m] is one of my favorite names for a girl and it always makes me happy to see. I love her paired with a very feminine name like [name_m]Kit[/name_m] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] or [name_m]Kit[/name_m] [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] or [name_m]Kit[/name_m] [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] (I would imagine the opposite would be just as lovely!).
It’s funny you say that because there’s about 5 [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], etc that I want to honor and so that is a large part of what led me to [name_m]Kit[/name_m] in the first place. [name_f]Scout[/name_f] is just a cool name that I myself would want to have. If I can think of [name_m]Kit[/name_m] as having a southern flare, then I think it can push it up toward [name_f]Scout[/name_f] for me. I’m really after the southern aspect. @ashthedreamer
In the crowd of [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_m]Lane[/name_m], [name_f]June[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Leigh[/name_f], [name_f]Lynn[/name_f], [name_f]Marie[/name_f], etc. for mn, I like that they are both short and crisp but unexpected.
[name_f]Scout[/name_f] is outdoorsy and pensive, a water baby, an explorer and full of kindness.
[name_m]Kit[/name_m] is zippy, energetic, outgoing, no nonsense.
I prefer [name_f]Scout[/name_f] as a first name, but since [name_m]Kit[/name_m] would be a family name for you (honouring Kathleen/Katherine) that would be enough to push it ahead for me.
Scout is very To Kill a Mockingbird to me- which I love. I picture a little girl who is sassy, spunky, loyal, and curious, who is constantly getting into trouble by accident and isn’t afraid of speaking her mind, but who also has a very loving personality. Barefeet running through grass, playing in mud, reading in trees, drinking homemade lemonade on the porch, teasing the family cat, and messy hair. Super sweet name.
Kit, on the other hand, has much more mixed imagery to me. I could easily picture Kit on either a boy or a girl (unlike Scout which is pretty fem. to me.) Again, I’m getting literary vibes, someone who loves books and has a house full of them. I picture a Kit to be sweet and fun and slightly eccentric- in a good way. Bright, charismatic, and stubborn, but with a more refined air then Scout (since I think of Jane Austen a little bit with the nickname Kitty…). She has impeccable fashion sense and music taste, and travels a lot!
I honestly love both, but I think I slightly prefer Kit on boy and Scout on a girl.
I do not consider them as proper names and would never use them personally.
However if I need to choose one I pick [name_f]Scout[/name_f], as the girl in “ to kill a mockingbird”. By and by her real name was [name_f]Jean[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] and I think it’s beautiful!
I totally get it and know it’s a bit bold. But we do like it and a middle is a fun place to explore and add some playfulness in a name. Feels safer to do so there!
I prefer [name_f]Scout[/name_f]! [name_m]Kit[/name_m] is cute, but I prefer it on a boy, and even then, I think it can sometimes feel a little plain. It’s still a good name though! I feel like [name_f]Scout[/name_f] was “supposed” to make this huge comeback and jump in the charts for popularity, but it’s still pretty uncommon, ranking at #821 in the US (336 baby girls born with the name last year / or 0.019% of total births).
I did look that stat up to for [name_f]Scout[/name_f] and was surprised it fell back pretty dramatically (less popular) which I like because the first name is more classic and I always have like to balance that out by adding in a wildcard/less safe choice! So the name has plenty of options for her to grow into.
[name_m]Kit[/name_m] has meaning to honor some ladies.
[name_f]Scout[/name_f] is the name I like better.
So this is what I’m actually weighing…which one is more important!
