Seamus

[name]Do[/name] you think most people can pronounce this correctly? I really like Irish names, but being Irish I can look at them and read the correct pronunciation. [name]Seamus[/name] is by far my favorite. But I don’t want a son to have say every time someone reads his name “no…it’s [name]SHAY[/name]-mus”

I know how to say it, but I didn’t before I started using nameberry. I bet most Americans would have issues with it. I’m sure he’d get “see-muss” a lot. All I can think when i see this name is “[name]Shame[/name] us”.

Since it’s a [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] name, more people will have been exposed to it. Your average American is a lot more likely to get this one right than most Irish names.

[name]Seamus[/name] is also American slang for a private detective. I don’t think it is terribly unfamiliar. I love it.

I love it and i would say about 80% of people would pronounce it correctly.

I always thought it was see-mus 'til I read this thread and now that I learned the correct pronunciation I can’t get over “shame-us”. Sorry.
