Searching for Oscar substitutes

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries!

I have a name dilemma and I’d love to hear your suggestions.

I really love [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] but it’s too popular here in the UK (10th) so I’d like to find something similar.
I’ve been through many long lists of names and “If you like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], you’ll like…”-posts but nothing feels very good.

What I love about [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is its sound, meaning, Irish+Norse origin, history, [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u] as a namesake and just that general unexplainable feeling you get from a name. It hasn’t been super popular before like [name_u]William[/name_u], [name_u]Michael[/name_u], [name_u]David[/name_u], [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_u]John[/name_u], [name_u]Jack[/name_u], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] etc. but it has historical roots.

I also love [name_m]Alfred[/name_m], [name_u]Alfie[/name_u], [name_m]Louis[/name_m], [name_u]Leo[/name_u] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] but not as much as [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]. Other names that I really like but don’t love enough are [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_u]Amos[/name_u], [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], [name_u]Orion[/name_u], [name_m]Lars[/name_m], [name_m]Septimus[/name_m] and [name_m]Victor[/name_m]. I like mostly classic names and names with Scandinavian and Ancient Greek or latin origin.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any suggestions for names like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] or other names I could like based on the the names and styles I listed? Don’t be afraid to suggest whatever comes to your mind. It’s fun to see what you guys have even if it doesn’t lead to the perfect name.

I love Oscar too - it’s such a spunky, versatile name. Names that feel similar to me in style/have something ineffable that align them with Oscar in my mind are:

Felix
Miles
Soren
Remy
Xavier
Jasper
Monty
Otis
Atlas
Bastian
Jude
Caspar
Leopold

Angus
Lucian

Raphael
Caspian
Atticus
Xander
Flynn
Henry
August

Some of these feel similar to Oscar much more than others, namely ones like Otis, Felix, Caspar, Hugo, Miles, Jasper etc but I just listed any names that came to mind when thinking about Oscar.

I can’t think of any suggestions that haven’t been mentioned already. I wanted to say from experience that I didn’t use a name due to popularity and I still occasionally regret it.
#10 isn’t as popular as #1 and if the name feels like “the name” I would just use it.
Yes, its not as exciting as having a name that isn’t heard too often, but you could pick an uncommon name tomorrow only for it to become on the rise the next day.
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is great, I vote not to replace it!

Names like these feel like the same style. And others feel more distinctly Scandinavian.

It actually makes a lot of sense that no name has held a light to Oscar. It resonates with you in so many ways. It’s unlikely there are many other names that hit the same emotional notes and still remain under the radar, especially given the staying nature of boy names.

I will suggest based on your naming style Arturo, Vito, Marco, Clemens, Anton, Emil, Lennart, Albin, Rasmus, Maxim, Conrad, Arnold, Stefan, Fredrick, Benedict, Leif, Marius, Abram, Casimir, Sylvester, Rubeus, Ansel and Torben.

I’ve thought about this too. I don’t want there to be five Oscars in his class but it might be worth it if we truly can’t find anything better.
Thank you!

Yes, it might be one of a kind (for me). It’s frustrating how having less boys’ names in general makes so many of the nice ones very popular.

Thank you for your thoughtful suggestions! I like many of them :two_hearts:

Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions! I’ll give many of them a thought. However, it seems [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and I have a very strong bond that can only be broken with time if that.

#10 probably isn’t too bad. I could balance it out with an unusual mn that he could use if he became frustrated with the popularity of his fn.

If you like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], what about [name_m]Edgar[/name_m]?

Thank you for the suggesion! I feel guilty for being this picky but I’ve never been a fan. [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] is too rough somehow. [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] are gentler.
