I definitely do not think this could work on a girl, its all boy to me. I like [name]Sebastian[/name] quite a lot - but only on a boy.
I’ve never seen the Sebastiene spelling but in the past Sébastienne was somewhat popular for girls in [name]France[/name], Sébastien was also used but not often. Personally I can’t imagine them on a girl in any country. I wasnt even sure it was a legitimate unisex name until I looked it up. I would go with the “e” spelling since it’s a little more feminin.
Thanks for the reply, strawberry shortcake. It seems most of the berries that have voted feel the same way. Still, I’m going to keep the poll up for a week and see what the results are later.
[name]Sebastian[/name]/Sebastiene may become a quirky favorite of mine - as a first or middle for either sex.
I can’t see it on a girl, sorry, it just does not sound girly at all
Yes, I wasn’t sure if it crossed over to the girls when I saw the feminine spelling of [name]Sebastian[/name] on the ‘S’ names for the girls on NB.
I admit it’s definitely “out there” so I think it’s most likely going to be placed in the middle. It was never my favorite but somehow it’s enchanting me, atm.
To me this name will always bring to mind the singing crab. I’ve never been a fan of it on boys, let alone girls.
googoogixie - [name]Welcome[/name] to Nameberry. I’d guess the current generation of adults who are in their late teens and onward will think of the singing crab. Thanks for the feedback. I’ll put that into consideration.
catlovrd - Thanks for the reply. I suspected that most wouldn’t since it hasn’t assimiliated into popular culture or most anywhere as a girl name. But [name]Emmy[/name] Rossum who’s birth name is “[name]Emmanuelle[/name]” makes Sebastienne seem possible (if I can come up with a cute nickname).
thetxbelle - Also, thanks. If ever I were to use the male name and turn it into a feminized form, Sebastienne would be it.
TBH, even if there is some legit female version, it’s very unlikely anyone knows that. So using it on a girl is going to get a lot of eye rolls for using a boy name on a girl. [name]Even[/name] with a “feminized” spelling, I’m sorry but I HATE it on a girl. I apologize for being blunt, but it’s my honest opinion.
Definitely a boy.
I agree. I cannot imagine a girl names [name]Sebastian[/name].
I like [name]Sebastian[/name] for a boy. As far as, “Can it work for modern babies?”, yes it can! [name]Sebastian[/name]'s popularity is on the rise. If I loved it for a girl, I’d certainly feminize the spelling, probably to Sebastienne, so there’d be no mistake.
[name]Sebastiana[/name]
[name]Sebastiane[/name]
[name]Sebastia[/name]
Um, what’s this about a singing crab? lol
I love [name]Sebastian[/name] for a boy. It’s actually a popular name, #68 to be exact, so I’d say it’s already shed it’s Disney image and integrated nicely into modern society.
Only on a boy- I think it would be dreadful for a girl, I’m sorry. I know I would not appreciate it if my mother named me [name]Sebastian[/name].
Sebastienne might be ok, but it’s not one I would use.
From The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid.
@flick - hahaha thanks. I’ve never seen much Disney. My big sister always tells me I haven’t lived until I see more Disney films. Looking at the crab and imagining it singing, I don’t see it as a bad namesake.
[name]EDIT[/name]: I like the suggestion of Sébastienne!
HAHAHAHA. Oh my. amberdaydream Have you watched or heard of Disney’s version of the Little Mermaid? There’s a singing crab named Sebastian in that animated film.
auroradawn: I’d do the same if when the time came, I felt Sebastienne was THE name to go with. Thanks for your response. Much appreciated.
And thanks for everyone who voted and replied as well. I hadn’t noticed that Sebastian was that popular for the boys! I suppose it’s because I don’t know very many newborn Sebastians.
The poll will be up for another 5 days or so. We shall see where this goes. But the trend is that Sebastian is predominantly seen as a masculine name - quite expected. But it pleases me to know there are some people who feel the same: it can work for either girl or boy.
[name]Love[/name] it for a boy! Isn’t it in the top 100? I think it’s already very much in style and has lost the crab association to most. It’s a great name, and no, I can’t picture it on a girl at all. Some names can cross over, but [name]Sebastian[/name] is so completely masculine to me that I can’t even conceive it on a girl. I have known a woman named [name]Sebastiana[/name], though.
Sebastienne would be tolerable for a girl (although really not my taste), but [name]Sebastian[/name] itself, no way.
