[name]Hi[/name] Berries,
I recently had a minor panic attack about our girl name selection, and through a post like this one, I was able to work through it. I’m hoping I will be able to do the same for our boy’s name now.
Here is the dilemma, I only want to use family names. We have always been very limited with our choices, especially if this turns out to be second boy. I want to know which name YOU think would be best as a first name, AND goes well with sibling [name]Harold[/name] [name]Jonathan[/name], nn [name]Hal[/name]. Also, feel free to include any particular name that you wouldn’t use.
Thanks so much for you help!
(First Name Only) Your Choices Are: [name]George[/name], [name]Barrett[/name], [name]Holt[/name], [name]Edward[/name], [name]Hugh[/name], [name]Kurt[/name], [name]Frederick[/name], [name]Francis[/name], Tomberlin (nn [name]Tom[/name].)
These are all regal, neglected classics like [name]Harold[/name]. Any of them would be perfect for [name]Harold[/name]'s brother.
I wouldn’t use:
[name]Barrett[/name] - too modern
[name]Holt[/name] - [name]Hal[/name] and [name]Holt[/name] are too matchy/cutesy for me
[name]Hugh[/name] - ditto [name]Holt[/name]
[name]Kurt[/name] - dated, doesn’t have the regal air that [name]Harold[/name] has
Tomberlin - would be perfect as a middle name, but very mismatched with [name]Harold[/name]
[name]Edward[/name] is my personal favourite of the names you listed. The only one I definitely wouldn’t use is [name]Holt[/name], because [name]Hal[/name] and [name]Holt[/name] is a bit too matchy.
Thanks SouthernMaple-
My issue with all the ones you selected is this: [name]Do[/name] you think they sound good even with us calling him [name]Hal[/name]? For instance, imagine yelling for [name]Hal[/name] and [name]Edward[/name] to come to dinner. Or for [name]Hal[/name] and [name]Francis[/name] to get off the swings. I think that is what has me worried…
I think these vintage names have the same vibe as [name]Harold[/name] nn [name]Hal[/name]. All are strong and distinguished.
[name]George[/name] - [name]Hal[/name] and [name]George[/name] are great together.
[name]Frederick[/name] - [name]Fred[/name], [name]Freddie[/name] would be fine with [name]Hal[/name].
[name]Francis[/name] - [name]Frank[/name] and [name]Hal[/name] - perfect! [name]Even[/name] [name]Frankie[/name] would work well.
[name]Edward[/name] - [name]Ned[/name] would be a wonderful nn to go with [name]Hal[/name]. [name]Teddy[/name] would be cute too!
I would eliminate these names from your list. They either don’t have the depth that [name]Harold[/name] has in abundance or they begin with the same initial.
I like [name]Edward[/name]. I think [name]Ned[/name] and [name]Hal[/name] or [name]Ted[/name] and [name]Hal[/name] would sound really good together. I like the formal name/ nickname like with [name]Harold[/name] nn [name]Hal[/name] again.
My second favorite is [name]Frederick[/name].
I also like [name]Kurt[/name], [name]Hugh[/name], and [name]Francis[/name]. I dislike Tomberlin and [name]Holt[/name]. I would like [name]Thomas[/name].
Good [name]Luck[/name]!
[name]George[/name] or [name]Edward[/name], nn [name]Ned[/name] would be my pick!
Maybe [name]Barrett[/name], nn [name]Rhett[/name] also. I guess if you are strictly using nicknames, matching with [name]Harold[/name] is not as necessary.
You have some great names here, I don’t think you can go wrong. Good luck!
I agree with many of the others, my favorite option is [name]Edward[/name] nn [name]Ned[/name]. I think [name]Hal[/name] and [name]Ned[/name] would make Adorable brother names! Second choice would be [name]Hal[/name] and [name]Fred[/name]. With [name]Harold[/name] [name]Jonathan[/name] I like [name]Edward[/name] [name]Holt[/name]/[name]Edward[/name] Tomberlin and [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Hugh[/name]. Good luck! =]
Thanks for all the input Berries! I really appreciate it. Now, let me throw you a curve ball, or two.
About [name]Edward[/name]- I don’t like nns that don’t start with the same initial as the name. So, for example, his monogram would be EHT and he would go by “[name]Ned[/name].” That really bothers me. So, if we use [name]Edward[/name], that only leaves [name]Ed[/name] and [name]Eddie[/name] for options.
Now, onto nns that end in -ie. (Like [name]Frankie[/name], [name]Eddie[/name], and [name]Georgie[/name].) I don’t care for them either, especially for a boy. I considered [name]Georgie[/name] for our daughter at one point, and I know a baby girl who goes by [name]Frankie[/name], so those are out too.
That leaves the following options: [name]Edward[/name], nn [name]Ed[/name]; [name]Francis[/name], nn [name]Frank[/name]; [name]George[/name], no nn; [name]Frederick[/name], nn [name]Fred[/name]. Any opinions you care to share on these would be greatly appreciated.
About the matchy-matchy issue. Having the first letter be the same doesn’t bother me. Now, if they also contained the vowel ‘a’ or an ‘l’ too, then I would dislike them, but they don’t. So, other than not liking two names that start with same letter, how do you feel about [name]Hugh[/name] and [name]Holt[/name] with sibling [name]Hal[/name]?
I like George and Hugh best! Hal and George is super cute. And Hal and Hugh sounds very distinguished, if you don’t mind the first initial match. It’s much less matchy than Holt.
I think it’s ok not to have a nickname. You will always have pet names for your children even if they don’t have an official nickname. Some names stand alone. I always wish my parents had just named me my nickname instead of a longer name that I don’t identify with, so there are perks.
I’m not a big fan of Ed, Fred, and Frank. I think they just sound sort of old and they’re so short that they’re not that interesting! Hal, Hugh, and George are short names witha lot of character and interest, Hal because of how uncommon it is, Hugh because of the unusual sound and dignified air, and George because of those rich “g” sounds.
