Secret Name Affair

Hello, all! Like most of you, I love classic and vintage names. Some of my favorites (most of which my husband will not agree to) are [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Eve[/name], [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Adele[/name], [name]Phoebe[/name], [name]Mae[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Pearl[/name]. I dislike surname and unisex names on girls . . . but lately, I find myself secretly in love with [name]Harper[/name]! My concern is that if I name one daughter [name]Harper[/name], I will be stuck in that style for the others. Are there any classic/vintage names that you think sound good with [name]Harper[/name]? Thanks!

I think something like [name]Harper[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] or [name]Harper[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] would sound good? Although [name]Harper[/name] is not “classic” and sounds very American to my British ears, it has attained some classical literary status via [name]Harper[/name] [name]Lee[/name].

Let us know what you decide! (aren’t husbands a hindrance sometimes!)

To me, [name]Harper[/name] sounds like a very musical name. It could go well with names like [name]Viola[/name], [name]Allegra[/name], [name]Eulalie[/name], [name]Angelica[/name], [name]Carol[/name], [name]Elodie[/name] (because it evokes [name]Melody[/name]), [name]Cadence[/name], and maybe even [name]Echo[/name] (thought that one’s not classic either).

Also, personally, I think a lot of people fret far too much about having a consistent naming “style” across all their children. There are so many different ways to define a “style”, and ultimately, each child is an individual. The kids might even get along better as siblings if they aren’t seen as part of a “set”. But I know we talk a lot about style on this web site, and I do understand parents’ concerns about family naming style, too.

I picture Southern or comfy names with [name]Harper[/name]:

[name]Clementine[/name] (nn [name]Cleo[/name])
[name]Pearl[/name] (Oops! Forget this one…With [name]Harper[/name], [name]Pearl[/name] reminds me of [name]Pearl[/name] [name]Harbor[/name])
[name]Susannah[/name] (I actually know of sisters named [name]Harper[/name] and [name]Susannah[/name])
[name]Tess[/name] (Never mind…There’s the actress [name]Tess[/name] [name]Harper[/name])

If you’re unsure , you could always use [name]Harper[/name] as a middle name.

Good luck, Brklyn!
