We’re considering using [name]Bodhi[/name] as a first name for one of our twins. It is not settlet yet but I was raised in a Buddhist family. It is not a strictly Buddhist name but the better half and I think it is a nice option. I have the feeling other people will hate it so here’s a test drive.
We don’t have a solid name option for hte other twin. I’ll most likely get back to you for more advice in the future =)
[name]Ah[/name]! I’m so glad someone else loves this name. I was considering the spelling Bodie for a while. I think it’s original, but not too weird, cute, but could age well. Great choice!
Before now, the only time I’ve heard the word [name]Bodhi[/name] is in association with a yoga studio. It seems pretty easy once you get used to it. Sanskrit is a beautiful language, and I love that it means awakening. It’s unique without being wacky.
[name]Bodhi[/name] is pronounced with a longish “o” and silent “h”.We don’t plan on using an English name for the other twin =) most likely it will be a short Japanese name.
[name]Jenna[/name] Elfman’s husband is named [name]Bodhi[/name], so I’ve heard of it before. It isn’t my style either, but I don’t dislike it.
Other people will tell you what they think if you tell them your name choices before the babies are born, but only someone really rude would tell you they don’t like your son’s name after he’s here, so if you love it and are set on it but think other people will be negative, you can just keep it under wraps until they’re born.
As a New Hampshirite, I associate it with [name]Bode[/name] [name]Miller[/name], the skiier. He’s not the greatest guy but he is a good athlete and if I met someone named [name]Bodhi[/name] I wouldn’t really think of him. I like the name!
My first honest reaction was that I didn’t like it, but I do like that it has religious meaning to you.
Also, after thinking on it for a moment, I think it would settle in quite nicely since it has a similar sound to some more commonplace names like [name]Brody[/name].
It’s nms but I think it’s a viable choice. If you love it, use it!
Good luck!
[name]Hi[/name] [name]Nana[/name]. I really love [name]Bodhi[/name]'s spiritual meaning, and with your being raised Buddhist, I think it’s a great choice. Because I’m familiar with the name (I’ve heard it in reference to [name]James[/name] [name]Taylor[/name]'s grandson and [name]Jenna[/name] Elfman’s husband), I personally don’t find it shocking.
I don’t NOT like it, and I see the appeal in the name, especially with the popularity of fun, two-syllable names for boys ending in the EE sound. I love the connection to your Buddhist upbringing, too! That being said, I fear that it might be too blunt, too unusual, for a first name, and thus I would relegate it to the middle name position. I’d choose a complimentary name for the baby’s twin.
I HATE to say this, but [name]Bodhi[/name] would make a stellar pet name, too… :-/
I haven’t piped in for awhile but had to say I love this name and have considered it myself even though I’m not Buddhist. I love the meaning and feel this name is fresh but not so out there or unheard of that it will freak people out. However I don’t think this name is going to appeal to anyone that has more traditional tastes. [name]Bodhi[/name] is definitely a more adventurous choice than a lot of other names out there. I even think [name]Bo[/name] is a great nn if for some reason down the road you didn’t want to call him by his full name.
