I am really loving [name_f]Selah[/name_f] and SO thinks it’s beautiful, my only concern is the pronounciation, will she spend her life telling people it’s [name_m]Say[/name_m]-la? I really do not want to be forced to spell it Sayla or [name_u]Saylor[/name_u] (interchangeable to my Aussie pronunciation.)
I love [name_f]Selah[/name_f]
and I don’t think that its that bad of a pronunciation problem! People will grasp it rather readily 'm sure
I’m an Aussie and I would pronounce it the same as you do.
I really like [name_f]Selah[/name_f] and I’ve never met one!
I read it as see-lah, sorry. I’ve never met anyone named [name_f]Selah[/name_f] or really come across the name before though. If it’s more common in Australia people would probably get it.
I looove [name_f]Selah[/name_f]. Honestly, it’d only need one correction, it’s pretty easy to correct.
Yes. I would first say See luh.
This word is Hebrew. You probably already know it is found in the bible, and I believe it is actually pronounced Seh’lah (both syllables are short).
I know it’s commonly pronounced as [name_m]Say[/name_m]-lah or sometimes even See-lah, but (and I’m no linguist by any means) given that the vowel pointing in Hebrew: a segol on the first consonant and a patah on the second, I wonder why you’d say the first syllable is “See”.
I’m inclined to go with Sel-ah as that is (to me) the closest sounding to the correct Hebrew pronunciation.
That being said however, while its most common reference in the bible is from the book of Psalms, it is also found in 2 Kings 14:7 as the name of a city -with the same spelling, so while most people refer to the fact that when scriptures are read aloud you do not read the actual word, presumably in one place it was actually pronounced.
However, in most of the scriptures it means pause, rest, meditate. It is appropriate to pause when the word comes up and then to continue without saying the word. It is more of a written cue to the reader)
So- if you are looking for the CORRECT pronunciation I would go with Seh’lah, but, since the popularity of this name is rising, (and mostly being pronounced as [name_m]Say[/name_m]-lah) I do not think you would have any issues with people saying it incorrectly if [name_m]Say[/name_m]-lah is your preferred pronunciation.
I love it and know a couple of little girls by this name. As far as the pronunciation, it should just take a simple correction but I would think it wouldn’t be super difficult for most people.
I love [name_f]Selah[/name_f] and honestly it might be an issue with pronounciation, but unless that will really put a full halt on the name then just go for it. Most likely, you’d only need to correct someone once. [name_f]Selah[/name_f] has been one of my favourite names for a long time.
I love the name [name_f]Selah[/name_f]! It is supposed to be pronounced seh-LAH in Hebrew, but as a name, I’ve only seen it pronounced as [name_m]SAY[/name_m]-lah. See-lah doesn’t even cross my mind when I see [name_f]Selah[/name_f].
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] all is well! My oldest is named [name_f]Selah[/name_f]. We pronounce it [name_m]SAY[/name_m]-luh. Most people do upon reading it. A few will say SEE-lah. We live in the US though, so it may be different. I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it and I’m so glad we stuck with it. She gets lots of compliments on her name. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] that helps!
It’s actually pronounced see-luh which is the pronunciation I prefer.
Like @twoplustwins, I am in the US as well and would pronounce it See-lah. But it would only take one correction for me to pronounce it properly. It’s not hard to remember–just a simple change in one vowel sound.
I love [name_f]Selah[/name_f]! I pronounce it as say-la. There was a berry (stephykneejo??) who had a daughter named [name_f]Selah[/name_f], though I’m not sure how she pronounced it.
[name_u]Haley[/name_u], if we are thinking of the same person, she spelled it Saela and I believe she pronounces it the same as you
I much prefer the “say-la” pronunciation myself.
That’s right! I knew I was on the right track ![]()
