Shane?

I just met twin boys named [name]Ryan[/name] and [name]Shane[/name] which I think is great. I never really considered [name]Shane[/name] and since I am worried about [name]Ryan[/name] being to popular what do you think of [name]Shane[/name] with siblings [name]Jack[/name] and [name]Claire[/name]?

Is it too weird that both [name]Jack[/name] and [name]Shane[/name] come from [name]John[/name]? I was thinking about [name]Evan[/name] the other day and that has the same issue.

I think [name]Jack[/name], [name]Claire[/name], and [name]Shane[/name] are very nice together! I think the common root name is a cool connection with the two brothers names. Because [name]Jack[/name] and [name]Shane[/name] have such different sounds, I don’t find it odd. To me it’s just like using two different names with the same meaning.

[name]Shane[/name] is a really solid choice that I never hear suggested on NB. I wouldn’t worry too much about the [name]John[/name] thing unless it bothers you - most people will have no idea that they both come from [name]John[/name], and it could be kind of a nice thing for brothers to share. It does give me a completely different vibe than [name]Jack[/name] and [name]Claire[/name], but not in a crazily obvious way. I just think I like [name]Ryan[/name] better as part of the sibset. FWIW, I haven’t met any young Ryans in quite some time!

I don’t think many people at all will know the real root of the name [name]Shane[/name], nor will they think it odd to have a [name]Jack[/name] and a [name]Shane[/name] in the family. They sound so different.

I think it’s an inspired choice-- [name]Shane[/name] [name]Anthony[/name] F******n has all of the qualities your mutli-ethnic family is looking for, and pairs beautifully with [name]Jack[/name] and [name]Claire[/name].

I am just shocked my DH is on board with it so [name]Shane[/name] is going into the top 5!

Now the issue is I don’t think I could use [name]Anthony[/name] as the mn since I have a nephew named [name]Sean[/name] [name]Anthony[/name] - yet another [name]John[/name] variation - also named for my grandfather [name]Anthony[/name]. Other family names we could use are [name]Nathan[/name]/[name]Nathaniel[/name], [name]Robert[/name], [name]Bernard[/name], [name]Bruce[/name] none if which I love as much but are for important people.

Thanks for all your input!

I find [name]Shane[/name] really dated, sorry. In Australia it’s a bit of a chavvy/redneck/bogan name, at least in my experience.

I think the rhythm of [name]Shane[/name], [name]Jack[/name], and [name]Claire[/name] is really nice since they are all strong one-syllable names. I like when sibling names are similar in length. (of sound, not letter-count).

I would know [name]Shane[/name] and [name]Jack[/name] are both forms of [name]John[/name], but I’m honestly a weirdo.

I love [name]Shane[/name], it is really underused. I vastly VASTLY prefer it to [name]Evan[/name]. I can’t stand [name]Evan[/name] but love [name]Shane[/name].

I don’t think it sounds too different, style-wise. They all sound nice together, nobody sticks out as the really unheard of obscure one. [name]Claire[/name] is a little more French than the other two, but in a very accessible long-history-of-shared-use way, not vastly more complicated or “foreign” feeling than [name]Jack[/name] and [name]Shane[/name]. Heck, [name]Clare[/name] is an Irish saint. [name]Said[/name] aloud, “[name]Jack[/name], [name]Claire[/name], and [name]Shane[/name]” doesn’t feel jarring or mismatched at all.

That said, I’m American and to me [name]Shane[/name] is underused and charming. To my Aussie husband it’s in sort of what I shall call “[name]Darryl[/name] territory” where it’s certainly a name, a name that is known and won’t make people fall out laughing, but it’s sort of a middle-aged guy who works on trucks and might keep a cigarette behind his ear, and he won’t let me mention using it or [name]Gavin[/name].

He’s a bastard.

That is interesting about the perception in Australia! I see [name]Shane[/name] as a cool, athletic, friendly kid.

@stripedsocks - my DH hates [name]Gavin[/name] too which I loved but recently met 2 different [name]Gavin[/name]'s under 6 that were nightmares if that makes u feel any better.
