Shaw or Everett

Hello all!!

Team green but the gut tells me its a boy.

I am trying to decide on a name for the baby. My husband and I both want something more unusual because his last name is incredibly common (think [name_m]Miller[/name_m] although its not that…:)) and I am worried about having two boys in our community with the exact same name. I grew up with 3 girls in my 60 people grade with my first name, so I don’t want that for our baby.

I truly love both names. Both names ([name_u]Shaw[/name_u] and [name_u]Everett[/name_u]) are rather unusual I feel, but I am aware that [name_u]Shaw[/name_u] is especially so and perhaps mostly unheard of. I saw it on a nameberry list and felt drawn to it. It is usually a surname, but a lot of the recent popular names started as surnames as well. However, I would love to know what others think-haven’t told too many family members/friends yet so really don’t know what the reception will be.

xoxo Thanks all.

I’m afraid with [name_u]Shaw[/name_u], people will hear it as [name_u]Shawn[/name_u] (or [name_m]Sean[/name_m]).
[name_u]Everett[/name_u] is safer.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Shane[/name_u]?

Totally hear what you’re saying re: shaw and shawn being confused.
I do love [name_u]Shane[/name_u] but not with my husband’s last name (his last name ends with an “N” and the alliteration bothers me) so I’ve been avoiding names that end with “N.” There are so many adorable ones that I love but it just doesn’t sound right.
Thanks for replying and for your suggestion!

Out of the two, I really like [name_u]Shaw[/name_u]! I think it is the soft strength of the name (much like [name_u]Seth[/name_u] or [name_u]Shea[/name_u]) that makes it appealing. I’d love to see this name used more

Congratulations!

Both [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and [name_u]Shaw[/name_u] sound like brothers names! [name_u]Everett[/name_u] is getting quite popular these days and chances are there would be a few more at his school. [name_u]Shaw[/name_u] is really different and spunky. I’m leaning towards [name_u]Shaw[/name_u]. I love one syllable names for boys.

I adore both [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and [name_u]Shaw[/name_u]. They have both been on my list at one time, though [name_u]Shaw[/name_u] was on there as a middle/honor name because it’s my mom’s maiden name. That being said, I do prefer [name_u]Shaw[/name_u] a bit more as a middle name. It is very surname-y, even for the current surname trend, which doesn’t make it bad at all, but might make it a little harder to carry. I also have never heard the name [name_u]Shaw[/name_u] as “[name_u]Shawn[/name_u]” and don’t know anyone who has, either, anytime I’ve ever said the name out loud. So for me, the potential confusion there is a non issue. Perhaps [name_u]Everett[/name_u] [name_u]Shaw[/name_u]? I think that’s a really handsome combo.

([name_u]Shaw[/name_u] would be my choice. I like [name_u]Everett[/name_u]) but I am hearing a bit more often these days.

My brother-in-law wants to name a son [name_u]Shaw[/name_u] someday; my sister only thinks of the supermarket chain when they talk baby names.

I’m not wild about [name_u]Shaw[/name_u], myself, and between the two names, I much prefer [name_u]Everett[/name_u], any day.

If your husband’s last name is Milne, “[name_u]Shaw[/name_u] Milne” sounds an awful lot like “Saw Mill.” Fingers crossed that’s irrelevant, but wanted to mention it as it jumped to mind when you hinted at baby’s last name.

I don’t know any little Everetts in real life, although the name is gaining steam statistically. I’d use it. I think it sounds laid-back and gentlemanly at the same time, and it has more nickname potential than [name_u]Shaw[/name_u], so even if there is another [name_u]Everett[/name_u] at school, chances are good one of the boys will go by Ev/[name_u]Ever[/name_u]/Rett anyway.

Best of luck, and congratulations!

Thanks so much for all the thoughts! It’s really appreciated.
My husband’s last name isn’t Milne so no risk of confusing my son with a saw mill lol!
From what I see now it’s really mixed opinions, would love to hear more but it’s actually reassuring to me to hear that both are well liked by some people!
