Sherlock?

[name_f]Do[/name_f] we think this can be used as a first name nicknames Sherl and [name_f]Lockie[/name_f]?

I love big one hit wonder names like [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] or [name_m]Odin[/name_m] for example, those big names everyone knows but rarely uses.

Could [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] pass? Funky outlandish middle?

I think it is brave but usable! I like the nickname [name_m]Lock[/name_m]

I think you could use it!! I like it! I wish there were better nicknames though. I don’t really like Sherl or [name_f]Lockie[/name_f]. Maybe just [name_m]Lock[/name_m] would be nice.

Sherlock is lovely, and I do think it’s usable! Definitely a brave, bolder choice. I think it fits in well with current trends. I also really love the nn [name_m]Lock[/name_m], and I think it makes the name feel more down to earth and usable.
If you’re still unsure, [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] would make a very cool middle!!

Wow I’m actually loving these responses, I love [name_m]Lock[/name_m] as a nn too. Me and my husband are pretty brave when it comes to baby names so we probably could get away with it.
I honestly thought people would be hating it but I’m encouraged that the first responses were positive :black_heart::male_detective:‍♂

Unfortunately, for me, it will have to remain a gp. I :green_heart: it, but I have a few names that are a bit more important for me to try to use first before I even get to consider the gp names I have. I’ll be excited to hear of a baby [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] coming along in the next few years.

I think I prefer it as a middle name (mostly because I shy away from first names that have one overwhelming association, whether it’s positive or negative), but it is very cool!

Brave but i think it’s usable

Bold but definitely useable!

Hmm…it’s a cool namesake, but I feel like it wouldn’t be easy to wear in real life. Might have some teasing potential too.
The name [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] is just too tied to the character, intelligence, solving mysteries, etc.

Love it!

Yes!! I love it. I love the nn [name_m]Lock[/name_m] too!

I’m into it! :slightly_smiling_face:

I met a little boy named Michaelangelo once, which I thought was very bold. As most people think of the teenage mutant ninja turtle… but i was totally on board with it!!

Do what you love!!

I absolutely love the idea of this name, and usually my response to potential teasing about the name is “kids will find anything if they want to tease someone”. Having said that I’d have a couple concerns.

First, it does seem like a very easy target for teasing. I can imagine the whole “no s**t [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]” thing, and kids are mean.

Second, much like virtue names I feel like names tied to a very specific and recognisable character can put pressure on a kid. If logic, problem solving etc isn’t their thing it could be tough.

That was a very long winded way of saying, love the name but would probably only consider as a middle! I absolutely adore [name_m]Lock[/name_m] or [name_m]Locke[/name_m] as a nickname though, and that almost sways me!

Love that you guys have a bold and brave approach to names!!

It’s a no from me, sorry. “No s**t, [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]” is still a common saying, plus it’s so very tied to a single character (are there any other Sherlocks? I don’t know of any).

Would be a fantastic pet name, though! [name_f]Hope[/name_f] that doesn’t offend you—that’s how I think of all the names I really want to use but can’t quite see working on a human being

Personally I’d be delighted to meet a [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m], however I am incredibly biased being a big fan haha. I’m not too sure how it would go down irl, so I’ve kept it in the middle. It is a pretty big name to have, but possible to pull off. I agree that it’s brave, but maybe just doable, so I say go for it. I think there’s a chance they’d really dislike it, but the same goes for any name. Plus [name_m]Lock[/name_m] is a pretty great nn option.

Agreed. I feel like people would laugh whenever he met someone new :\

I suppose I’d relegate it to MN status, since there’s not a more “normal” nickname. Personally, I love an unexpected name with a grounded nickname, like [name_m]Ben[/name_m] for [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m], etc.

However, I’d be all about [name_m]Holmes[/name_m] as a first name :slightly_smiling_face:

Sherlock is totally usable in my opinion, especially with the nn [name_m]Lock[/name_m] / [name_f]Lockie[/name_f]

Holmes is an awesome shout on a first name :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
I already have a son named after a detective featured in a Nintendo game and a daughter with a name from an anime so me and my hubby are pretty ballsy lol
[name_m]Holmes[/name_m] would also make an awesome 1 syllable middle name
