Shiloh - does it "belong" to Brangelina?

I love the name [name]Shiloh[/name]. If you used it for a baby, do you think people would automatically think of the [name]Jolie[/name]-[name]Pitt[/name] child? I don’t want to let celebrities influence my naming, but if there is an instant association it’s probably best to avoid it. [name]Just[/name] wondering what y’all think…

I first think of the YA novel, then [name]Shiloh[/name] [name]Jolie[/name]-[name]Pitt[/name]. It’s a beautiful name, but the associations are strong for me.

They brought it to prominence, but it should be reclaimed!

Nope, I knew a [name]Shiloh[/name] long before Brangelina got together.

No, celebrities don’t own names. They may have brought it to a larger audience, but if you love it, I would use it anyway.

I went to school with a girl [name]Shiloh[/name] and have a family friend boy [name]Shiloh[/name]. It doesn’t belong to them at all. It’s very Biblical, so people in [name]Christian[/name] circles will be more likely to have heard of it prior to Brangelina.

[name]Shiloh[/name] has been a favorite of mine long before Brangelina, so I would say no, it doesn’t and it’s such a lovely name that it would be a shame if no one used it.

That makes sense. The more we use it, the less ownership they have of it. I think it’s such a beautiful name.

No, the [name]Jolie[/name]-Pitts is not my first association with that name. Also, their kid is now like 5. If you had a kid 5 years ago and also named it [name]Shiloh[/name], then probably people would assume it was because of them.

I’m excited to read these responses, as [name]Shiloh[/name] was a name I too loved years ago, right up until the birth of [name]Angelina[/name]'s daughter. I got the name from the children’s novel about the dog, but I also appreciate the Biblical mention and the Civil War connection. I was horrified when [name]Angelina[/name] “stole my name.” [name]Ever[/name] since then, I HAVE thought of her family every time I hear the name [name]Shiloh[/name], but perhaps that’s just because I’m a name nerd who felt robbed of a good name. Lol. Hm…maybe I’ll throw [name]Shiloh[/name] back on my list…

Absolutely not! I didn’t even remember that was her name. Plus I grew up with a girl named [name]Shiloh[/name] who has always been like a little sister to me so she is where my mind went. I love the name. No one owns it so I think you are free to use it if you want

I have a male cousin (30-something) named [name]Shiloh[/name]. Plus it’s a biblical place name. It was my #1 name (boy or girl) so I was pretty upset when Brangelina used it. As the years go by [name]Shiloh[/name] is moving back up my favorites list

I think it’s fine, it’s a lovely name and it should be used more. And even though people might think of [name]Angelina[/name] and [name]Brad[/name]… I like them! They seem really nice and caring and a bit weird, and she’s seriously amazing, I wouldn’t really care if people thought I’d been a little inspired by them.

I actually forgot that they had a child named [name]Shiloh[/name] until you mentioned it.

I know a [name]Shiloh[/name] (mid-twenties) so I think of her. THEN Brangelina, but I think that depends on one’s region and how celeb-focused people tend to be), then the book. For what it’s worth.

The [name]Shiloh[/name] I know wears it so well. It’s a fantastic name, with a bit of soft tomboyish spunk to it.

I think of the beagle, personally, but it’s still a favorite name of mine. I didn’t even know that they’d use the name, but I’m useless with celebrity knowledge/gossip.

I think that celebs ‘owning’ names depends on common they were prior to the birth. [name]Shiloh[/name] certainly wasn’t unheard of.

Despite the fact I was first acquainted with the name with the beagle, it’s become too saturated with Brangelina at this point. In other words, the association seems too strong. It would be much like naming your child Whoopi, [name]Cher[/name], or [name]Arsenio[/name].

I had it on my list until today to be perfectly honest. I like [name]Shiloh[/name] a lot too, but I couldn’t get pass the Brangelina association. So yeah, I think the association is a bit too strong.

Wasn’t even aware that they had a child named [name]Shiloh[/name]. I think you’re all set.
