I ran across the name [name]Shiloh[/name] again today and I am really starting to love it, I could use [name]Lola[/name] as a nickname. But I’m worried it’s too strongly associated with [name]Brad[/name] and [name]Angelina[/name]'s daughter now. What do you think?
Sidenote: I really like this name because of a [name]Neil[/name] [name]Diamond[/name] song called “[name]Shilo[/name].” Would it be weird if I spelled it that way so I could say the song inspired me? Or should I just stick with [name]Shiloh[/name]?
Not only does it remind me of the daughter of [name]Brad[/name] and [name]Angelina[/name]…but I believe [name]Shiloh[/name] is also extremely popular for dogs names. [name]Just[/name] something to keep in mind.
If the song is the inspiration then I say use that spelling. [name]Shiloh[/name]/[name]Shilo[/name] are very usable [name]IMO[/name]. [name]Shiloh[/name] gets mentioned on name forums frequently. To me it’s masculine seeing as it’s the name of the male Beagle who is one of the main characters in the novel entitled “[name]Shiloh[/name]”. [name]Shiloh[/name] is an abused male Beagle that a young boy rescues. It’s also been made into movies. If I ever have a Beagle he’s going to be named either Snoopy, [name]Baron[/name], or [name]Shiloh[/name], with the preference being [name]Shiloh[/name].
[name]Shiloh[/name] is very Brangelina to me at the moment… but I think that reference may go away in a few years. The dog reference may be here to stay though, I don’t know. I actually think [name]Shiloh[/name] is quite a lovely name! But the [name]Brad[/name]-[name]Angie[/name] factor makes it unusable for me personally.
There was also a terrible battle in the Civil War called the Battle of [name]Shiloh[/name]… We studied it extensively in high school. That was actually the first impression I had after [name]Brad[/name] and [name]Angie[/name] used it. “Oh wow, they named their daughter after a bloody battle?” And then it was, “wasn’t there also a dog book about [name]Shiloh[/name]?”
If you do use it, you can expect that people will have some or all of the above mentioned reactions. However, I know it’s difficult to let go of a name you’re in love with!
My suggestion on spelling is to go with the original. Although [name]Shilo[/name] is significant to you, most others will not get the reference and will be forever spelling it wrong or thinking you’re a kre8ive speller… which you clearly aren’t! You could probably get away with [name]Shilo[/name] no ‘h’ if you use it for a MN…
I do remember the book about the dog, and I also live in the south so people would think Civil War before dog or Brangelina here. Maybe the celebrity connection will go away before I decide to TTC. It did fall from #604 to #620 to #625 the last three years so it is steadily declining. I think the song means enough to me to use the [name]Shilo[/name] spelling, but I am worried people will think I’m a “kre8tive speller.” I made so much fun of my friend when she spelled her daughter’s name Kayteline (supposed to be [name]Caitlin[/name]…ugh) I was like “You know it looks like it should be pronounced like [name]Kate[/name]-[name]LINE[/name] right?”
[name]Shiloh[/name] is usable. [name]Brad[/name] and [name]Angelina[/name]'s daughter does not own the name.
Honestly though, if you’re going to call her [name]Lola[/name] I would just use [name]Lola[/name]. It’s pointless to use a nickname that’s the same length as the given name.
I would totally use [name]Lola[/name] by itself but I always get so much criticism about it not being strong enough to use alone. And that it sounds like a fluff name compared to [name]Rowan[/name]. I don’t usually like nicknames at all actually, I just thought it sounded cool.
I think it is usable. I’ve heard of quite a few girls being named [name]Shiloh[/name] before [name]Brad[/name] and [name]Angelina[/name] used it for their daughter.
i would think brangelina if i saw/heard it, sorry. BUT don’t let that stop you if you love it. i think you should ask yourself if every time you introduced her you felt you had to explain about the song or would you not really care - i think that might help you. i have a sofia and i don’t feel like i ever have to explain why i picked a name at the top of the charts when i introduce her, but someone else might feel embarrassed about that and always feel silly if they had such a popular name. i know this example is far from what you are asking but i am just getting at how you would feel introducing her and how much you love the name and thus what matters. you can also use it as a middle and it would be your little secret for the most part since middles aren’t too obvious most of the time
I wouldn’t want to be called [name]Shiloh[/name]. It reminds me of the dog name. I love [name]Lola[/name], and had [name]Penelope[/name] nn [name]Lola[/name] on my long list.
[name]Shiloh[/name] has a beautiful sound and an interesting historical connection. For me, the major strike against is the association not with Brangelina, but with, yes, beagles. Still, I think it’s a strong enough name to more than make up for any canine (or celebrity) connections.
