Thanks for your feedback, thats my biggest/only concern! [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think its too big too overcome? I dont have a close second name at this point
[name_m]Harold[/name_m] Shipman is my strong and immediate association. I’d steer clear (no pun intended!)
I think if you were to use it, you might want to use Shipman as the full name because of the possible confusion with the curse word. That’s really the only downside I see. Perhaps use it as a middle?
This was my immediate thought too.
I also see @tfzolghadr’s point. I appreciate that it’s a family name but I’d avoid it.
I don’t find it very wearable as a first name, but as a middle it could certainly work.
I agree with everything that’s been said so far. I know it’s a family name, but it sounds like a rank in the navy or something, not a word I can see being used as a name.
I don’t have any negative associations with the name. I don’t think it will be mistaken for the crude word; the ending consonants sound so different. Kids may be cruel, but no one will think you’re cursing when you call him in from the playground! Also, I think it sounds like a cool occupational name, and I like it quite a bit
Our son in law’s last name is Shipman and I feel bad for his kids. As pointed out, Ship can easily be missaid in a crude way.
I think it could work well as a middle name, but really struggle to picture it as a first.
Wearable first names in a similar vein would be [name_u]Sailor[/name_u] or [name_u]Porter[/name_u], or even Helm.
Sounds like he will be teased and called shit. I wouldn’t use it.
One of my best friends had this surname. She changed it when she got married. She received many comments on the first syllable being similar to a curse word and was honestly just tired of it. I think it works best as a middle.
