What is the general consensus on using short names with a 1 syllable last name? Does it work? Does it depend on the name? SO and his siblings all have short first names and I think they sound ok but we want more opinions. We are planning on ttc in the new year and most of the names on our girls’ list are 1 syllable or short 2 syllable names. On our short list are:
I now have a short last name, one syllable. My maiden name was two. Our top choice for a girl is [name]Claire[/name] and at first we were kind of hesitant, but not only is our last name one syllable, it’s an animal, lol! So after a while, I said, “you know, nothing is going to sound great with this last name of yours honey, so let’s just keep claire!” Hopefully she will one day marry and have a longer name! I have a one syllable boys name on my list as well and it doesn’t bother us. No, flow-wise, it isn’t that great, but it is a handsome name! I think it just depends on you and your partner’s taste.
I actually really like it. Might not be as much flair but it can be just as dramatic and more memorable.
It’s worked for a lot of stars:
[name]Tom[/name] [name]Cruise[/name]
[name]May[/name] [name]West[/name]
[name]Spike[/name] [name]Lee[/name]
[name]Mel[/name] [name]Brooks[/name]
[name]Brad[/name] [name]Pitt[/name]
[name]Jude[/name] [name]Law[/name]
[name]Jet[/name] Li
[name]Bob[/name] [name]Hope[/name]
[name]John[/name] [name]Wayne[/name]
I love the name [name]Gus[/name] and my favorite from your girls list is [name]Faye[/name]!
I think it definitely depends on the name. I also have a 1 syllable last name after marrying my husband. I find that if the shorter first name has the same ending sounds as the last name, it’s pretty horrible. Pretty much if they share any sounds at all, it isn’t great.
My last name is a noun, so that doesn’t always help, either.
3 generations of my husband’s male family members have 1-1-1 names, so it doesn’t seem to bother them too much. It actually kind of sounds nice.
The only names you listed that work with my last name are [name]Maude[/name], [name]Ada[/name], [name]Orla[/name], and [name]Iris[/name]… but we don’t have the same last name, so…
