Should A Middle Name Flow With A Nickname...?

I love the name [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f], but I feel uncertain about the middle name since we’d call her [name_f]Kate[/name_f] during her early years. I don’t think [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] flows well.

Also, what about the name [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] (our last name has two syllables). I’m concerned that, both, [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] paired together is too much. For example, they both have three syllables, but most don’t pronounce them as three. The ‘er’ in [name_f]CathERine[/name_f] and the ‘ar’ in [name_f]MargARet[/name_f] are typically not pronounced. Is that too much of a similarity to pair the names together? [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is a family name so it would be nice to use it…

Any opinions will be valued!

Thank you!

I wouldn’t worry about the flow with the nickname.
I think ann is lovely with [name_f]Catherine[/name_f],but if [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] has more meaning for you, I would use that.
Sure, it is a bit of a mouthful, but we rarely say our names in full. Except when you are upset and want their attention, in which case “[name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]!” would work great

I wouldn’t worry about a nickname flowing with a middle name. I’ve gone by a nickname most of my life and never once have I been called by my nickname and my middle name together. The only time I think flow of the two would matter is when the middle name is part of the nickname, for instance, if you named a baby [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] and called her [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]. Otherwise, I don’t think it matters one bit.

I actually used to know a girl whose name was [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]. [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] being a double barrel first name. It sounded weird to me at first, but seriously it grows on you. I also don’t see a big problem with using [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] together. They are both very traditional, but I’m a big believer in using names that have personal meaning.

I wouldn’t worry about the flow of a nickname with a middle name.

I think [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] has a beautiful flow but I also like the sound of [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. Like you said, not all of the syllables in both of these names are always and distinctly pronounced. I like the way the “Er” in [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] and the “Ar” in [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] sound together too. It’s a pretty combination.

I don’t think I’ve ever worried about whether the nn I like flowed with the middle. Not unless I wanted a double-barrel nn, like [name_f]Bella[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u]/[name_f]Bella[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] for my top choice for a girl, [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. I’ve sometimes picked a middle with intentions for a double barrel nn–for example, I know that for whatever combo I end up with for [name_f]Eva[/name_f], I want [name_f]Claire[/name_f] or [name_f]Clara[/name_f] to be one of the middles, because I absolutely love [name_f]Eve[/name_f]-[name_f]Claire[/name_f] and [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f] as double barrel nns (even [name_f]Evie[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]!). I think [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] is lovely, and I wouldn’t worry about [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] too much. [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is lovely, but I think I like [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] more, personally. There’s just something about it that I like better.

Good luck!

I understand the problem. But just think, how many times are you going to call her by her first and middle name, let alone a nickname and middle name. I think [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is cute, but I don’t think you are going to introduce her as [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f].

Edited for privacy.

My auntie is a [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] She goes by [name_f]Cathy[/name_f] though. I don’t think there’s anything amiss with [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f].
