Should I be Sylvia's Mother?

Husband and I are trying to conceive number one right now and we are totally decided on our name for a boy but can’t settle on a girl. I have been obsessing over this site for a few months because I really love the overall style that people offer! At the moment I am loving [name]Sylvia[/name] with nicknames [name]Sylvie[/name] or (keeping an open mind) [name]Sylver[/name]. I don’t think most people my age know the Dr. Hook song, I’m a month shy of 25. Is it the first thing you think of when you hear the name?

Other girl names on the list if [name]Sylvia[/name] is out:
[name]Ingrid[/name] (Have a very german sounding last name that looks good with this)

Thanks SO much for any feedback!

I have always liked the name [name]Sylvia[/name]. It’s hard not to like it. It is beautiful, feminine, and comprised of VERY pleasing and distinctive sounds! It also looks great in writing. I like it the best on your list. (I’m older than you, but I’m not familiar with the song you mentioned.) I love [name]Genevieve[/name], but some people have experienced pronunciation difficulties with it. [name]Ingrid[/name] combined with a frillier middle name would make a nice choice too. However, my vote goes to [name]Sylvia[/name]!

I can’t get the name out of my head now. Why didn’t I name my daughter [name]Sylvia[/name]?

While I do like the other names on your list, [name]Sylvia[/name] has completely caught me off guard and jumped to the (almost) top of my list.
Here’s to hoping that we are the only two that recognize (and plan to use) this beautiful name and it doesn’t shoot up the charts.

Another vote for [name]Sylvia[/name] (love the nn [name]Sylvie[/name]!). [name]Genevieve[/name] is a close second, but [name]Sylvia[/name] is a little more unexpected.

Yay! Someone besides me knows Dr Hook (my parents were big fans when I was a kid). I don’t think that reference is too bad - it’s not like being Mrs [name]Robinson[/name], for instance (a Northern Irish politician named [name]Iris[/name] [name]Robinson[/name] had this reference made after she was involved in a scandalous affair with a younger man…). Anyway…[name]Sylvia[/name]. I love it. [name]Love[/name] [name]Sylvie[/name]. Very elegant and kinda quirky. Along Dr Hook lines, band member [name]Shel[/name] Silverstein wrote an infamous poem called “[name]Sarah[/name] [name]Cynthia[/name] [name]Sylvia[/name] Stout” who simply would not take the garbage out. Sorry for the meandering, but I thought you might appreciate it!

Good luck with the naming process and ttc.

I adore [name]Sylvia[/name]! I think it’s beautiful, and the [name]Sylvie[/name] nickname is adorable (I also like [name]Sylvie[/name] as a first name - it’s the French form of [name]Sylvia[/name])! I don’t think of the Dr. Hook song, but I’m under twenty, so that’s probably why… I would love to meet a little [name]Sylvia[/name]!

The other names from your list are gorgeous, too! [name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Ruth[/name] would be lovely, as would [name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] (if it’s not too ‘v’ heavy), [name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Penelope[/name] (if it isn’t too long for you), [name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Ingrid[/name], or even [name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Mary[/name] to honor you!

[name]Sylvia[/name] is currently my favorite name for a little girl! I think it’s beautiful and works well on a child and an adult. I say go for it! Also–I’m 22 and I am unfamiliar with the song you mentioned.

I love the name [name]Sylvia[/name]! It’s my favorite off your list. It’s such a beautiful name and [name]Sylvie[/name] is an adorable nickname. [name]Sylvia[/name] was my great-grandmothers name and I won’t be having kids for a few years, but I do hope to use it one day. I think you should definitely use it

I am sold! Thank you so much for the feedback! I can’t get this name out of my head and now I am just hoping it doesn’t have the same effect on others and become the next big name ;). [name]Just[/name] needed that little boost of confidence and now I feel totally settled on this.

My husband loves [name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] because he loves the idea of calling her [name]Sylvie[/name] B. I was surprised then to see this was basically the first suggestion on the wonderful list of middle name options, which is filled with names I have always loved!

Our almost 100% certain name list:

[name]John[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] ([name]Freddie[/name]) Family name going back 6 generations, ours will be the first to go by [name]Freddie[/name]!

[name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] ([name]Sylvie[/name])

Maybe after this it will be [name]Ingrid[/name] [name]Mary[/name]. So many kids to have!

Thanks again!

I love [name]Sylvia[/name]!
I know two Sylvias (Sylvi?) and they are both fantastic people.
[name]Genevieve[/name] and [name]Ingrid[/name] are both nice too.
I think: [name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Emmeline[/name]
[name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Mae[/name]
[name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Xanthe[/name]
Are all great combinations.

There is a beautiful song called [name]Sylvia[/name] by [name]Marissa[/name] Nadler. You should check it out!!
“[name]Sylvia[/name], [name]Sylvia[/name], [name]Sylvia[/name], I met you in the belly of a whale…”

I love it as well. My cousin [name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Grace[/name] will turn five at the end of this month. Her nickname is [name]Silly[/name] (though I’m not sure of the spelling), it’s supercute!
